How often do you use the Matador MP3 Library? As it grow bigger, we're contemplating taking some of them down.

I hit the mp3 library to check out the new stuff to see if I'm interested at all. I don't really trawl the archives or anything. I do like the exclusive stuff, like the monthly new Dead Meadow tracks, etc.

one minor related suggestion:
I'd love it if the video library was mpeg files instead of RealMedia. RealMedia generally sounds and looks pretty crappy, and the player's really buggy on my computer if it works at all. you can compress mpeg video to be pretty small if server space is the concern, and even compressed it still sounds and looks a whole lot better than rm files. that's just my two cents on that one.

all in all though, no complaints...

We're moving toward QuickTime and Windows Media for forthcoming videos - don't know when the old ones will get switched over, however.

VOTE, people!

i don't know which option would describe my usage of the mp3 library, but i guess i'm like martin; i just download any new mp3 that goes up. i think that's probably what most people do, so just keeping the ten or so most recent mp3s up would probably work for most people.

since the point is to generate interest in potential buyers, I'd think you could at least get rid of tracks from albums that aren't even in print anymore. (MC Paul Barman 12", anyone? anyone?)

re: tracks from albums that aren't in print anymore. But perhaps these would be of the most interest to people who couldn't find the records?

well, from our standpoint, yes, but from the label's standpoint... I would think it wouldn't be. hmm.

However, it would be nice if the Windows Media videos that were up worked since most of them (or all) are always stuck in buffering mode...

I got into quite a few bands by using the matador mp3 library, so don't change a thing.

My instinct is to leave it up, but we'll see...

About the WMA files: our encoder has fixed the problem, though not retroactively I believe. Starting with the next video we post, the files should play without the buffering problem.

I check it all the time and download stuff in advance of buying stuff. Eventually I get most everything - right now I have close to 400 matador releases.

In terms of the other file formats, will they play on all mp3 players. I bought a portable one for those daily train rides to Boston.

stewrat,

the other file formats discussed are for video. We will continue posting all audio in MP3 for the foreseeable future.

I guess the much hyped .ogg takeover never materialized, huh? Good riddance, I say! The .ogg ID tags are much too elaborate.

oh man, .ogg! that made me laugh outloud, Paul. whose idea WAS that, and why did anyone think it'd catch on?

I used to use Sonique for playing .ogg ... does Lycos even still distribute Sonique? I feel like I'm dating myself.

I just jam some of my favorites while I'm online because I don't download music.

that's excellent because it drove me crazy. I stopped even checking in. Will you be able to fix some of the older ones? maybe those getting a lot of hits?

As for MP3s, I don't think you should get rid of any of the older ones. For a lot of us it's the only way we can get our hands on them... without paying ridiculous funds on the internet that is....
