Tujiko Noriko
Ruins
S Prcss
Dangtrippers
I'm selling some albums in the next couple days and am wondering about these acts.
Don't know about the others, but since The Dangtrippers were on my list of indie rock favorites, I should probably say a word or two.
I've only ever heard the Days Between Stations album, and it was everything that was good about jangly guitar rock (think Athens, GA) in the 1980s and then some; the songwriting was unbelievable! I've owned it both on cassette and on LP, but currently possess neither copy (I'm eyeing one on eBay now, so don't get any funny ideas). If I had it on hand, though, I'd be able to cite specifics as to why it's so wonderful, but the details are jumbled in my mind over which songs are which and what makes each one so outstanding.
They actually released a second album too (called Transparent Blue Illusion), but I've yet to run across a copy anywhere. Someday, someday...

I like to think I'm "In the Know," but who the hell are these bands?

Of what I understand/read...
Tujiko Noriko: lap-pop. I'm not too into that whole genre, but I've heard good things about her.
Ruins: drum-n-bass noise rock kinda in the vein of Lightning Bolt and Hella.
S Prcss: dance-y post punk? (add) They are also on Frenchkiss, a label that holds several other bands I love.
Dangtrippers: this one I'm guilty. My only real interest in it is because it made Paul's list and I like 3 of the other albums he listed. Thought it might be something that'd interest me.
Again, I know very minimal amounts about these bands. That's the sum of it.

The new Tujiko Noriko album, "From Tokyo to Naiagara", is really good. It's a bit more accessive and cohesive than "Make Me Hard", her last record. Very pretty and maybe just a bit melancholic. I find myself listening to it late at night a lot. I've heard people compare her singing to Bjork's, but it's not distractingly obvious to me. The Ruins are nice ... spastic drums and bass duo. They're heavy, but almost jazzy and funky in places. Like similar groups (Lightning Bolt, Hella (mentioned above), Parts and Labor, etc), it's sort of amazing that two people are making that much sound.
I haven't heard the Dangtrippers or S Prcss ...
