Since "Top 5" lists seem to be the latest rage, how about your top 5 solo records? Use the following criteria:

1. Stated record must have been released between 1980 and present.
2. Stated record must have been originally on an indie or mini-major label.
3. Solo record cannot be the artist's only release.
4. John Mayer does not count in any way.
5. A group recording must exist (released between 1980 and present) including stated solo artist prior to the solo release.
6. Naming artists like Cat Power does not count since Chan is essentially the band. But Robert Pollard does count since other members of GBV contribute significantly to the band.
7. Naming any members of Phish may constitute getting your post deleted, no exceptions.
8. Any one top 5 list should not find a solo artist repeated.
9. Any genre of music will work given the criteria.
10. Stated record cannot be an EP.

Here are my choices:

Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard - Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department
Portastatic - The Nature Of Sap
Crooked Fingers - Red Devil Dawn
El-P - Fantastic Damage
Neko Case - Blacklisted

bonnie 'prince' billy - i see a darkness.

don't know if the last one qualifies for this list.

I can't think of 5, but Jim O'Rourke's Insignificance and Eureka would certainly mark off the top (were I allowed to include more than one album by an individual artist).

hmmm

elliot smith - elliot smith for SURE.
REALLY want to say Paul Westerberg for Suicane Gratifications but it was on Capitol (What was he thinking!)
the 1985 cut off is killing me because I think one person who really went solo sucessfully was of course Lou Reed. Too bad for me...
