Indie Labels

I am writing a research paper on the situation of the independent label in the modern music industry (or so it seems so far) and I was wondering if anyone here can point me in the direction of some good articles on the subject.
I'm looking for some stats on record sales, etc... I've tried looking in google but to no avail. You people seem pretty knowledgeable about all things music so I thought I would see if anyone here could help.
Preferably I am going to focus on very, very small labels (cassette only labels, cd-r labels, etc...) not neccesarilly larger ones such as Matador (even though they aren't technically "indie" anymore since they are owned by B.B. or something, but who the fuck cares anyway?)

there was a whole bunch of really good stuff about indie labels making deals with majors (matador included) but its outdated...like 1995ish.
