View Full Version : Top 10 Hardcore, Punk, Post-Punk Rock Albums since Gang of Four's 'Entertainment'

The criteria are similar to bitterfruit's:
1. Stated record must have been released after 1980.
2. Stated record must have been originally on an indie or mini-major label.
3. Naming Red Hot Chili Peppers may constitute getting your post deleted, no exceptions.
4. Artist or group on your top 10 list cannot be repeated.
5. The record must generally fit into the genre described above. Granted, there is some vagueness here; your interpretation of what constitutes "hardcore, Punk, Post-Punk" will be respected. Noise rock does count.
6. Stated record cannot be an EP.
You go first.
I can pick albums from 1980 since Entertainment came out in 79', right?

I really don't know whether to consider Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, or the Pixies to fit into this category, but I sort of ran out of ideas.
This sucks because I have to chop off Television's "Marquee Moon" and Wire's "Chairs Missing," which most definitely deserve a spot on any "punk"-related list.
I find it a fucking tragedy that I overlooked Mission of Burma - Vs.

I don't care what anyone says, but I just can't listen to Minor Threat or the like. I'd rather listen to Rush if that says anything. And Rush makes me puke.
"Entertainment!" on the other hand is bad ass. I'm not sure what the punk line in the sand is for me, but I just can't seem to digest all the straight-edge stuff. I like indie-pop for a reason.

I used to have a bunch of Rush albums (I even saw them three times back in the late 70s/early 80s). I sold all of their albums years ago and haven't missed them enough to rebuy any (I have rebought a fair number of hard rock & metal records I sold in my youth but no Rush, though there are a handful of songs I don't mind). If you even suggest I ditch my Minor Threat records, I will have to hurt you.

That Contortions album is tough competition against Entertainment!, but it was released in 1979. I think the rules could be bent for this album, though.

I can switch it out for Off White, if you like, although it is perhaps a little less 'punk' than Buy the Contortions.

I wasn't trying to harp on you or anything; I was actually commending yr choice. I was just saying that it isn't quite qualified, but due to the album's greatness, should fit any list.
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten my hands on a copy of Off White. Dying for it, though.

Honestly, if you dig Chance, the box set is worth picking up. It has pretty much everything he released minus the stuff on No New York, and all of it is at least very good. Buy the Contortions and Off White are both masterpeices.
Also, if you haven't got the Teenage Jesus and the Jerks cd, you should. I think it's great that No Wave is getting attention these days. Hopefully this will mean that something by DNA will end up on the market.
