It's a great place to buy GbV stuff (besides Matador's mailorder, of course)! Todd will take good care of you.

Absolutely NOT.
When I saw that page, I started laughing and jumping up and down in my seat--I mean like, laughing for no freaking reason.
This totally made my day--I was also kinda hoping for a tracklist (totally cool though, we can wait), but this was great to finally see some graphics and definitive information.
and FURTHERMORE, I think the cost at LUNA is WONDERFUL for what is included in the package (sorry Patrick, is it kosher to say that? I don't mean to purposefully tell people to shop over there instead of here or whatever...)
wow...wow...wow...

damn! $55 bucks! that's nothin! I was seriously expecting something in the 70s or 80s, considering "suitcase" was something like $60 and that had one less CD and one less DVD...
rockin!
what would a post by me be though if I didn't complain just a little:
is it just me, or is the artwork really kinda bad? I apologize hugely to all involved in the artwork (most likely bob and mark ohe, no?) for being a bitch, because usually I love the GbV art, and was expecting more cool collage/homemade psychedelia like on past GbV releases, but this stuff looks kinda "last-minute-photoshop" to this design geek's eyes... then again, that's the last thing that matters, and having that much GbV all in one handy box is stunning. I'll be pre-ordering that mf this weekend, fer sure...

Wonder what the chances are of seeing this on Nov. 4 at my local Best Buy.

That remnant remaining of the aircraft after it was copied and pasted had to be visible to the person doing the Photoshopping so my guess is it's an intentional haphazard job.

The art work instantly struck me a being, well...hate to say it, but weak---compared to what we've come to expect from GBV.
But you are right. Who really cares in the end? If the contents rocks, then the packaging becomes secondary.
I was thinking this would be an $80+ purchase. 50 bones is a steal.

I trust everyone involved with the box set. There's certainly a lot more to the artwork than what we're getting in the announcment. There's a book and 5 CDs to put stuff on.
I've always loved that Magnet photo of Bob in the wizard costume. I say it makes a great album cover!

I think you guys will like the finished package - the JPEGs do not do it justice. Plus every individual CD inside (two gatefold digipaks and two single digipaks) has its own artwork for the individual CDs. Some of these are more similar to the collage-effect style of 'Earthquake Glue' or 'Mag Earwhig', while I see the box set art as more similar to say 'Alien Lanes' or 'Isolation Drills' in its weird sci-fi colors and paperback logo. The 'Best Of' artwork is more on the pro side - a la 'Do The Collapse' in refinement and proficiency, even though the actual look is quite different.
There's going to be something for everyone in this baby...

By the way, I should mention that the 'Best Of' separate release is different from the version in the box in a few key ways:
1. Separate 'Best Of' is the special Bob sequence. The version in the Box is strictly chronological.
2. Slight differences in versions in 2 or 3 songs between the two 'Best Of's.
3. Totally different artwork between the 2 'Best Of's.
4. Reversal of title and subtitle between the 2 'Best Of's. The separate one is called 'The Best Of Guided By Voices: Human Amusements at Hourly Rates'. The version in the box is called 'Human Amusements at Hourly Rates: The Best of Guided By Voices'.
5. Separate 'Best Of' is jewelcase, version in box is digipak.
There are also a couple differences between the DVDs, rather more minor:
1. Separate DVD is available in 2 packages: either "amaray" (the usual plastic oblong DVD case) or "jewel" (a standard music-sized CD jewelcase, but clearly marked DVD).
2. DVD in the Box is digipak.
Artwork is identical on all three releases, given minor adjustments for the different shapes/stock/components.

What I was to know, is will the standalone best of also be released on vinyl? That'd give me the .01 ounce of a reason I'd need to buy it seperately, as opposed to the just short of the mark .008 ounce generated by the mere existence of the seperate version on CD.
I'm assuming the best of is long, over an hour? Double Vinyl?!?!? YEAH!?!? Say yes!

Patrick, here comes the avalanche of questions....... is this getting a UK release, or do you think it would be best to order it directly from yourselves or Luna?
Thanks, I'm looking forward to this!!
Patrick

No vinyl planned for simultaneous release on the Best Of folks, but you are right that the collection deserves one. I'll talk to the band and the art and production folks.
The deciding factor here, as with the Slanted Deluxe set, has been time. We originally planned this whole project for holiday season 2002, and here we are barely getting it out in time for holiday season 2003. Vinyl releases add a whole extra chunk of time and resources to the mix, and we simply don't have time to do it. That doesn't mean we won't do it soon though - perhaps in early 2004. I'll discuss with our folks.
Ladt, everything is being released in the UK, but as imported finished-stock from the US due to the complexities of the packaging and the down-to-the-wire status of the production. It's up to you whether you want to order from us or from Luna, or try to track it down in the UK when it comes out. I will say that officially it is coming out in the UK on the same date as here.
One note to Europeans (and Australians and South Americans and everyone except the US, Canada and Japan): while the DVD will be all-region-compatible, the video will be encoded in NTSC only. Please be aware of this fact.
Best
Patrick
Hmmm I think it may be cheaper to order from you or luna if it's going to be import prices. Thanks for the help as always Patrick!

now is it me, or should this be the other way around ... i think since you are buying the box, you should get the bob pollard sequence as opposed to the boring ole cliched chronological. or is this just a scheme to make an extra ten bucks out of me. guess i could just play them in that order on my computer or something.

Hi interrust,
The theory was that as a representative history of GBV's greatest moments, the Best Of should be straight chronological in the box set.
But for the first-time buyer for whom the separate mid-price introductory set is meant, the songs shouldn't start in GBV's lo-fi beginnings but provide a representative flavor of the band's entire career in a balanced way as it proceeds through the sequence. This is the sequence that Bob designed.
I hope this makes sense.

i see what you mean, patrick, and i agree with how you want to introduce the new listener to gbv; i recently made a 2 disc mix of gbv stuff for my girlfriend, and, am very articulate when sequencing any mixed cd's, and know how it is almost pivitol to shake it up, as opposed to the fans who wouldn't mind going frm beginning to present day, in this case.

and there's the Matador Europe online store I run everyone forgets me. sniffle :) I'll be selling copies in some way, shape or form
http://mailorder.almaroad.com/cart/matador_frames.html
no idea of price here though, but I know we'll be pricing it as competitively as we can
Thanks Mojo, that'll probably be the best option then.
s'okay, just call me jo btw, its just cause we can't do two letter usernames on here, so I got me a "mo"
we got a few new gbv bits in stock last week -vinyl albums and other such great things, which I should probably post about on a new thread rather than hijack this one...
Damn, if I had remembered about the sites existence I could have ordered the new album on there and avoided the whole saga I went through trying to get a copy! Time to ad to favourites.

My fault for not mentioning the Matador Shopipng Cart at Beggars! Thanks for jumping in Jo.
Soon when you click the "Matador Store" icon on the front of the site, you'll be given the choice of ordering from the Matador Store (US-based) or the Matador Shopping Cart (UK-based).
Patrick
no worries :)
thanks for that Patrick!
fingers crossed the shop will be getting a bit of an upgrade soon... I'll post when I know more!

I thought again today about how either
1. This is a great fucking deal or
2. I got ripped off when I originally bought "Watch Me Jumpstart" alone for ~$20 on VHS several years back.
To get it on DVD with the other stuff is beyond reasonable in terms of price.
I just can't wait for the endless threads for the years to come entitled "GBV DVD Box Set Easter Egg..."

more importantly,
what is the tracklist for "Delicious Pie ..." which is already filed under What's On Our Record Player at nudeasthenews.com? I hope these horrible rumors that Bob has lost the original recording of Back to Saturn X are unfounded.

A pal told me the original recording was among the many cassettes destroyed by a flood in his old house a few years ago. They were literally in suitcases, soaked with water.

The only full recorded version of "Back To Saturn X" is on the Blatant Doom Trip tribute to GBV. A small chunk of "Back To Saturn X" is on Propeller.

I'm not sure of a price yet, but I'm guessing it'll match the US one...
