Just got back from Numbers, Erase Errata and The Ex. What a show! Every one of the bands was great.

Coming up...

Sept. 25: Quasi, Hella and Dame Fate (Black Cat, DC)
Oct. 20: Enon, Irving and I Am the World Trade Center (Nanci Raygun, Richmond, VA)
Oct. 27: Lightning Bolt, USAISMONSTER and White Mice (TBA, Richmond, VA)
Nov. 7: Explosions in the Sky (Nanci Raygun, Richmond, VA)
Nov. 20: Q and Not U, A New Dawn Fades and Forget Cassettes (Nanci Raygun, Richmond, VA)

There are a couple others I'm considering (Junior Senior, Beulah, The Decemberists, etc), but I don't know if I can actually fund them.

I have shockingly few... normally sept/oct are huge show-going months as bands tour through on their way to/from CMJ.. but not much this year. off the top of my head:

Built To Spill (2 night stand @ the Paradise)

Battles / Suntan (Middle East)
Death Cab / Mates of State (Middle East)

at T.T.'s, all separate nights, obviously:
Black Dice
Consonant
Essex Green
Themselves

This is definitely what I'm leaning toward. I'm not a huge Beulah fan, just want to go because it's their final tour. The Decemberists are interesting, but nothing fantastic - just thought about it because it's cheap. Junior Senior is playing w/ The Electric Six - who really get on my nerves - but if it is unbearable, I'll just leave. Thanks, Paul.

It's good for me, though, as I was already planning on missing them in order to see Cathedral at another club (and a completely different state of mind). Hopefully, the rescheduled date will be one I can catch. I like that snippet of song in the VW Beetle commercial but I've not heard any of their "full length" recordings and I'm definitely intrigued and will often check out a band with a "buzz" live before checking out their records.

The Spree record isn't bad, but it's not great either. I am hoping that the live show will deliver. I'm aslo very curious as to how this is going to take place given the size of the stage at the venue they are playing. Too bad that your show was postponed.

Under normal conditions I'd be able to go. But state-budget cuts and the recession have made the college slim down on the number of people they send to CMJ. I lost my opportunity to the Promotions Officer - even though he went last year AND I outrank him - because he's a junior.

Ah, I can tag on this show:

11/7: Beulah, Velvet Teen @ Great American Music Hall

Should be fun...this is apparently not their last tour, which I found out from e-mailing Miles Kurosky.

(EDIT: Don't let Pitchfork confuse you...their news reports about recent Beulah happenings have been a bit confusing [well, to me, anyway].)

They plan on touring next year, so don't despair if you can't see them this year.

Has anyone here bought "Yoko" yet? Any thoughts?

the only other upcoming show for me is the death cab for cuties, which i am superly excited for. i saw them for the first time at sxsw this year and they just blew me away. i was so suprised at the hardness of their rocking. anyone who is a fan must see them on this current tour.

Modest Mouse was rather baffling at the Fillmore last night...

After the Helio Sequence and the Shins, who both played phenomenal sets, Modest Mouse came on with Isaac Brock's announcement that he had lost his voice, evoking several gasps from the audience.

As far as I know, they hadn't played any shows for at least a month before, so the loss of his voice was pretty bizarre to everybody, especially considering how much he screams.

While what they played was good (they did a lot of meandering) and the black-and-white visuals behind them were cool, MM only played for 45 minutes, and Brock struggled to get anything out. This roadie came out after they walked offstage and said "OK everybody, be quiet! Modest Mouse would like to apologize - they can no longer play due to Isaac's voice."

Very disappointing. Oh well, at least the openers were good...the Shins played longer than the Mouse did! I have to wonder what they'll do the next two nights at the Fillmore.

The new material that Modest Mouse played was quite promising...sounds a lot better than M&A..."The Good Times are Killing Me" being one of the new highlights.

Really, he claims to have lost his voice - but what does it mean, "lose his voice"? Does it mean, like... F*O*R*E*V*E*R?!?? I mean, how did it sound to you while they were playing, was it painful?

I don't know about their live show, but the Hidden Cameras' latest/debut(?), The Smell of Our Own, is a great disc. If you don't mind homosexually explicit lyrics and Magnetic Fields, I think you'll definitely enjoy them. I'd go if I were you.

I'm probably missing Xiu Xiu this weekend, so instead I'm picking up Ex Models and Mono. Just saw Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Saturday night and they definitely have an exciting live show. Lots of bubbling energy, beer-slinging, and bouncing was had by Karen O. They seemed genuinely appreciative of the audience, too - a credit I don't think their detractors like to hear.

It's not that he lost his voice "forever," he was just down with laryngitis or some ailment like that. It wasn't painful to listen to either, it's just that the repertoire was limited to about 11 songs - an example of the problem was that he couldn't yell the main verse in "Interstate 8" (or yell anything else, really). After about ten songs, he was looking at the setlist and saying "Nope, can't do that one...not that one, either...", and then somebody yelled out "COWBOY DAN!", to which Isaac responded, "Yeah, I think I can do that one," which led into a meandering rendition of "CD" to close the show.

Overall, it was better than if they hadn't played at all, but had Brock's voice not been a problem, the show would've been much better - perhaps even phenomenal.

Actually I remember downloading live songs from a fan website (the very good one, with tabs and everything) and ending up VERY disappointed. I knew Isaac Brock's voice was limited, that showed on the records and stuff but still that wasn't a problem. But on these live songs it was just badly sung ; the song was Trucker's Atlas, one of my faves, and it just sucked ; Brock was more growling macho-style than anything else, singing as if he thought noone could hear him behind the amps. I recall getting quite cooled downed towards MM after that. My girlfriend who hates them didn't hold herself from saying "You see, they suck", and on that occasion she was right. Maybe that was just a catch from a bad evening like the one you mentionned?

for someone who wasn't really interested in electronic music, this year has been filled with watershed events.

last night's concert was one of them. not only did i think that manitoba didn't play long enough, but i felt that it was some of the most beautiful music (combined with really interesting, low-budget visuals) i may have heard all year.

broadcast were stunning. the live act looks and sounds great. their soundman is aces. in a space that usually sounds really crappy they were fortunate to get a good mix. i wish they'd done more of the menacing part of their disko, but it was a good long set. and their visuals were great too.

Q and Not U is tonight - managed to snag a date for it, too. Huzzah for that.

Missed the French Kicks cos the singer was really sick and they cancelled the show. Oh well, I hadn't left the house yet, so no harm no foul. Hopefully he feels better.

US Maple was, once again, show of the year (as they have been for every year I've ever seen them, that being the past 4). Holy shit, man, those guys are NO JOKE. The new drummer, Adam Vida, is tremendous too. Not as crazy and worrisome (in a good way) to watch as Pat Samson, but a tremendous drummer and a perfect addition to their insane dynamic.

Rocket From the Tombs were great too, but by that point I'd had a few too many and was too busy talking too much to Todd from US Maple (he was very gracious and nice, bless his heart for putting up with my blather). But yeah, RFTT really had a lot of energy and really did the songs I knew (not that many) great justice, so I can imagine that for a big fan it would be a huge treat to see them.

I didn't get to sneak next door that night to see Arab Strap, but I did inadvertently give Malcolm Middleton directions for how to get to the club. It was only after he walked off that I put 2 and 2 together that a scotsman wandering around with a flight case might be in Arab Strap.

But man, US fuckin Maple. they win. everything.

Rocket from the Tombs was awesome when I saw them. Did David Thomas still drink out of that flask after every song? He's huge.

tinobeat
12-12-2003, 02:40 AM
Indeed I do own it. I think its fantastic, but it *is* different from the others. A lot more straightforward, but only in relation to their older stuff. But compare it to most other records and its still pretty fucked.

The do a wonderful cover of "Lay Lady Lay" by Dylan on it, and it works perfectly into the vibe. In that its the only US Maple album I could imagine a Dylan cover fitting in, but they really fuck with the song too.

Acre Thrills and Talker are still my two favorites though.

the live show is still much more unhinged than the new record.

I didn't watch RFTT so much as listen to them from the bar and the pool table. They were plenty loud, so no problems hearing them from the back, and it was way too crowded up front. So I don't know about the flask thing. But yeah, that guy is yuuuuuuuuuge.

I say "GO!"

I can't guarantee you'll love it, or even like it, but its a live experience unmatched by any other I've seen this year.

even if the music doesn't do that much for you, the somewhat abrasive stage presence plus the telepathy they must possess to play the way they do make it more than worth it. I'm rockin out to the new record as I type, and I wish I could see them on tuesday too...

I've seen the Furries, yes, but when I saw them they said "as the venue is all seating we're going to play a selection of slow songs" and did nothing from Guerilla. Which was a little annoying, I must admit, but they were good, and I'm going to see them again in april.

Hey Jeff,

I heard you mention a while back that you were going to go see that Shaggs musical at the John Anson Ford Theatre. Did you end up going? I went last night, and boy, was that weird. I really had no expectations but I guess I didn't think it would so much like a standard musical. Also, the dad character really disturbed me . . . like Brian Wilson's father x 100.

I had to exchange my tickets for tonight, since I couldn't go last week. I'm totally looking forward to it. Yeah from the stuff I've read about them, the dad seems like a fucking nutcase.

It certainly is; it's one of those shows that I'll definitely make.

Helms could do some god damned touring from time-to-time. They played about an hour away the day before I heard McCarthy, the bastards. And to think they just got my hopes up when I saw a link for DC-FIY (http://www.dcfiy.org/).

yeah, they certainly should tour more. Luckily I live in Helmsville so they don't need to tour for me to see them. But Sean and Tina (guitarist and bassist) got married last August so the few months since then has been all about them buying a house and doing grown up things like that. They're touring Europe this spring and hopefully hittin the great American highway after that.

I was listening to McCarthy really really loud the other night driving home from work. That second song is a beast. Nothing compared to them live though. I'll tell 'em to come down your way soon :).

a ton of great shows coming up here, but i'm most psyched for:

- television on 3/25, based on all the good word here.
- bettie serveert and asobi seksu on 3/27. less for bettie serveert and more for asobi seksu, actually. they have become my favorite NYC band over the past few months - kinda like a poppy MBV (the live show kills). their album is out soon and from what i hear it might get them some national attention. great artwork too, done by the same guy that does interpol's stuff.
- electrelane on 4/1. i wonder how they will do "the valleys" live.
- TV on the radio on 4/8. i wonder how they will do all of it live.
- sleater-kinney on 4/26. i love carrie brownstein.
- prince on 7/13. hell fucking yes.

it was excellent. i was expecting verlaine to be the flashier guitarist, but richard lloyd is a guitar fucking god. the interplay between them was something else - the way they trade off riffs is almost too hard to follow. 'marquee moon' is the only album i know well (criminal, i now know), so i hadn't heard a lot of the set (about 1:45). highlights were the second song (no idea on name), "little johnny jewel", and "marquee moon" - even though they change tunings midway through "MM" and didn't drop back in at the end. oh and i was right behind james mcnew in the bracelet line, which made my evening. only gripe is the vocals were too low in the mix for me all night.

anyone else, by any chance, attend the show and know what the second song was?

i saw electrelane last night and wow they rock pretty hard, surprisingly so. i never got to see stereolab live in the early days, but i imagine it was a similar vibe - build-ups to these blistering walls of sound, and a really tight rhythm section. the guitarist is really cute too. most of the 'power out' songs were great, but "birds" and "only one thing is needed" (when they pulled out the sax) were my favorites. i wish i knew their first album b/c they played a bunch of it.

oh and they encored with springsteen's "i'm on fire". i barely know the boss but my friend was pretty pumped.

I saw Electrelane on Wednesday night and wanted my money back by the end. Not to discount The Power Out, but they were pretty leg-locked and only used their microphones when singing, requesting stage crew, and murmuring, "Thanks." They just didn't have much personality. Apart from their sound -which was good- they came off like a high school band at a church talent show.

Maybe they were just letting it all out for NYC.

nah, i'm with you on the lack of personality - the music was great, but the guitarist was the only one moving more than a few inches on stage. but the crowd was really into it and i think that helped. it was sponsored by the onion, pabst blue ribbon, and WNYU, which made it more packed and drunken than expected. Radiohead: Was deeply, deeply in love with the band from '93 to '97, then burned out on them due to overplaying those three records (and the singles/b-sides) all the fucking time. Kid A was a welcome change, because they were doing something entirely different. Amnesiac was still good, but sort of boring. I really didn't like Hail to the Thief because it seemed like they were trying to recapture something they couldn't really do anymore. But, all said, I like Radiohead a great deal.

Modest Mouse: To be completely honest, I liked the first album when it came out. The Interstate 8 ep, as well. Brock's singing voice and reports of his childish live behavior began to irritate me before too long, though. About that time, people began talking about them all the time on every bulletin board I posted on...I couldn't get away. And, since I'm being honest, I'll admit I hadn't heard anything they've done since Interstate 8 until I gave the new record a spin a few weeks ago. For this tour its Jason Loewenstein on electric bass and Lou Barlow on acoustic guitar with pre-recorded drums.

By the way, anyone going to the gig in Northampton this Friday. The bill is Sonic Youth, Sebadoh and J. Mascis...you might see a Dinosaur Jr. reunion!

Interesting that Hail to the Thief seemed that way to you Paul, and fair enough. I kind of thought it did bridge their older stuff, with the more experimental stuff, but happily with an eerie depth and more substantial (mature maybe) songwriting approach than Kid A and Amnesiac. That said, I really like stuff on both those albums.

Live on the wkend - the band seemed so much more comfortable with who they are. I first got The Bends (which i love, but the My Iron Lung EP is great too eh?) but then in '98 on the OK Computer tour, I just wasn't sold live-wise. Of course the album floored me. Now OK's def. dated only due i guess to the massive influence it then had on everybody.

But christ, the new haunting, quiet stuff was stunning. "Sail To The Moon" live was worth the concert ticket price alone. (this is getting long...rant over).

BTW, am getting Pablo Honey from a friend...finally. Will it be good or great?

Jeff -

I was unfortunately unable to make it. A good friend of mine graduated from grad. school that day, so we spent the night eating steaks and drinking root beer floats (no joke). I'm very sorry I was unable to make it, especially since they've become one of my favorite bands. Did they do any skits or dramatic presentations? I really hope they come through town again. I wouldn't be surprised.

Did you make it to Coachella? Had a pretty great time despite the temperature.

Best performances: Radiohead, Pixies, Q and not U, Basement Jaxx, Air, Mogwai

Good performances: Dios, Broken Social Scene, !!!, Juana Molina, Kraftwerk, Belle and Sebastian

Mediocre performances: The Evens, Beck, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Cure

Yeah I went to my sisters graduation at LMU on Saturday too. I sat in the sun for over 3 hours. sucked.

Root Beer Floats are a thing of genius.

Of Montreal was Amazing. But the Echo sucks and cut them short. They played about 13 songs though, mostly from the new album. The Skits were hilarious! The highlight was when Kevin came out in a full body see through spandex bone suit and preceded to do 'lord of the dance' style shit. Best show I've seen in a long while.

caught colder last friday, and was pretty underwhelmed. i didn't have big expectations, but i actually considered leaving early on (which is rare with me). things picked up near the end, but they're definitely best experienced through a stereo.

also saw this band pas/cal last night, who i hadn't really heard before. but they were great live (7 people), and their new EP on le grand magistery is also quality. the sound is somewhere btwn elephant 6 and upbeat B+S.

tonight i've got the strokes (outside, and probably in the rain), and friday is the magnetic fields. looking fwd to finally seeing both of them.

yeah apparently they're split between detroit and NYC, which makes touring tough. but a song of theirs got used in a saturn commercial, which is helping fund some studio time. hopefully a full-length will be ready later this year. (talked to them afterwards.) they are definitely awesome though ... a lot of fun. instantly familiar, but with a really fresh sound.

Just saw Yo La Tengo last night at the Henry Fonda Theatre in L.A. What a good show. They played for a little over 2 hours, which is a marathon in my book, and closed with a number of great covers that were somehow related to L.A. (unfortunately, I recognized none of them). Ira can really play that guitar. I think because of their limited live instrumentation, his guitar really rises to the forefront and you can hear every little thing he does. Did anyone else make it to the show? I'd love to hear what any of those covers were. Oh, and James' voice is beautiful live. I've always liked it, but on Stockholm Syndrome he just sounded wonderful.

Sonic Youth were amazing. My only regret was not going to both Sydney shows. I have a new found respect for Lee Ranaldo, his songs were incredible and his guitar playing just ridiculously good. The whole band kicked though, Thurston the tounge-in-cheek showman, Kim just too cool in the best way, Steve great and Jim O'Rourke fits in perfectly. Much more awesome musicianship, interplay and band vibe than the '92 and '94/5 shows I saw.

Getting Nurse tomorrow, live it sounded great. As did the Murray Street stuff. Think they mix up the classics for each show, but we got Schizophrenia, Tom Violence and Kool Thing, all of which shredded.

After Radiohead and now this, I am becoming obsessed with bands into the autumn or later part of their career. I imagine Mission of Burma would be VERY worth seeing on that level. YLT certainly were/are.

Oh, and please encourage MoB to the Southern Hemisphere.

yeah the sound was total crap at the start, especially for the furnaces. the way they completely blew "chris michaels" suggested they'd never heard the band before. it seemed to get better later on in the day though.

i also saw TV on the radio, who were much better (and, coincidentally, way more sober) than the first time i saw them. good crowd rxn too, though i think their lesser songs tend to sound the same live. burma was really good ... i don't know them well enough to fully appreciate, but i left resolving to spend quality time with the albums ... they rocked pretty hard.

Just saw the Fiery Furnaces play last night. I'm debating with myself on deciding if it's THE best live show I've ever seen in my life or just one of the really really great ones. They played for almost 2 hours nonstop; not one single break. The brother was just ripping it on guitar and synth and the drummer has got to be one of the wildest I've ever seen. Great performance from Eleanor F. too.

Kinda ended on a down note because in their encore they accepted one request, and some superfan asked for some old obscure song that they forgot how to play, but tried anyways and ended up falling apart. Matt looked pretty pissed.

Other than that, hands down an absolutely unforgettable experience. If you get to chance to catch them live, do yourself the favor and seize the opportunity.

Yeah, I guess one could call it "jackassery." I call it highly amusing and interesting. During the several times he stopped drumming, he kept contorting his body in strange positions and pretended to conduct the rest of his band with his drumsticks. And yes, I caught some pretty hard glances toward him, but mainly from Matt. At one point during the encore he blatantly ordered the drummer, "Stop playing! Stop playing!" contributing to the awkwardness of the situation.

Just realized you were talking about Eleanor making eye contact with HIM, not the drummer. Funny that I felt the exact same way; I could have sworn she was staring right at me and wouldn't stop. Ah, delusions of reference can be a sweet thing.

Correction, that MoM and JB show is on Oct 21, a better date! I could really care less about Ratatat, as well, but man do I want to see the other two.

this would be of interest around the boston area.
Green Magnet School, Boston noise rockers from the 90's, is doing a 1 time reunion
for a benefit show oct 7 at the middle east.
they will be doing songs from the albums Blood Music, Revisionist and Illuminatus eras with all the corresponding members.
It is part of a 2 day show(10/7 and 8).
Other 90's noise rock bands doing one time sets are Kudgel, Slughog, Red Bliss,Luca Brasi to name some.

yes, it should be a fun time and i am
glad you are planning on going.
if the rehearsals are any indication the show
will be a rocking good time.

I'm probably going to check out the blood brothers on the opening date of their new tour. I tend not to like hot and sweaty concerts but I really like the new album. Anyone else think Crimes is a top 10-er?

i saw the fiery furnaces this past weekend and it was awesome, seriously awesome. way better (and crazier) than my first furnaces experience at coney island this summer. also saw of montreal last week, which was great though i wish i knew the non-'satanic panic' stuff a little better. they ended with a kickass cover of "jumping someone else's train" (handclaps and everything).

bloc party is playing here in a couple days, tempted to check that out. and i've got frankenixon and wilco (with the fiery furnaces opening!) next week.
