I guess my be-all-end-all love song would be "I Loves You Porgy" by Nina Simone.

Yo La Tengo: Our Way To Fall

Definitely "Thirteen" by Big Star. I love that song.

Also, "You and Your Sister" by Chris Bell.

i'm thinking love hurts by nazareth... if you want to get all "indie" on me you can substitute the version that kim deal and bob mould did for the love and a .45 soundtrack

Also, "You and Your Sister" by Chris Bell. I had a major crush on a guy when that CD came out and that song just kept running through my head (esp. 'cause the guy had a sister but she actually liked me and seemed to be trying to push us together). It was quite interesting when I found out years later that Chris Bell was gay.

I don't think indie rock when I think of love songs. You guys are way too cool for your own good.

Big Star - man, they had the tunes.

"Thirteen" is surely a great love song, but in terms of just fucking amazing pop writing, "September Gurls" gets the edge in my book.

Mr. HCI -

Didn't the Happy Flowers cover "Thirteen"?

I was a little late making that connection.

I was a little late making that connection. Yep, on our final album, Lasterday I Was Been Bad.

I would have to go with two...one upbeat love, one heartbreak love...

Upbeat..."Friday I'm In Love" The Cure
Heartbreak..."Answering Machine" by The Replacements.

Two of the greatest songs ever written in my book. In fact, Answering Machine is my favorite song of all time. Has been for years!

sorry to give you all the bad news, but there isn't such a thing as a 'best love song' - they all suck! :)
