i havent even really gone to websites on cat power, i hadn't "read up" on how the live gigs are going before i went to see her for myself..

i went to her corner hotel gig in melbourne on the 10th, unlike many fans, with a CLEAR CONSCIENCE.

i hadnt heard much about her recent performances, only that she was hiding behind speakers in sydney, which i found interesting but not something to form opinions on.

that's all i knew.

but when i saw her, i was shocked to find hostility towards her from HER FUCKING FANS!!

there were so many bastards in the audience, i couldnt believe it. that was the only thing, really that i have a complaint about.

catpower performed her set beautifully, and yes, she was tipsy, but i would be the same if i had the audience she had..

she was sweet, fun, adorable, she talked for ages with the audience, which was delightful, she shared smokes and whiskey, and she was giving things out..i wish i'd brought something with me to give her, cos, at least where me and my friend were standing, there were real fans, and there was a sort of giving-atmosphere..

i wish i could talk to her and tell her that she was great and the fucking idiots with the hostility towards her were just dickheads who like a good ol' conservative, conventional performance..one with no talking, no audience participation, NO SOUL, one where the artist wasnt herself..one where one song ended and the other one began with only a shitty comment in between like "melbourne's great!"

i'm sure these people, the ones that claim to be fans, but jeer at the sensitive artist, the ones that measure a performance by the money they spent on the tickets, the ones that dont just let criticisms go and enjoy things as they are, with a clear conscience (i.e. not joining a majority opinion that may or may not be true), ones that just cant accept that CHAN MARSHALL IS HUMAN.

These "fans" are the problem. imagine if Chan took your fucking shittiness to heart (i know i would..it was harsh..)

no wonder she cant stand being straight/sober in front of her fans anymore.
