In the past year, what albums have been a part of your listening rotation more than any others? I'm interested in both newer releases and those that--for you--are indispensable classics.

For me:

-The Wrens--The Meadowlands (kudos to you folks that recommended I special order an advanced copy)
-Sonic Youth--most of the SY catalogue
-Comets on Fire-s/t
-Pixies--Doolittle
-Modest Mouse--M&A
-Mission of Burma--vs.
-Wilco--YHF
-John Coltrane--Blue Train
-Miles Davis--Miles '58
-Miles Davis--Kind of Blue

Hmm, off the top of my head:

everything by Anaal Nathrakh, especially The Codex Necro - insanely over-the-top black metal, not my usual cup of tea
Emperor Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise - the other black metal band that really floats my boat of late
everything by The Malarkies - a folky "indie rock" duo from new York and my favorite "new" band
Solbakken Klonapet - fourth amazing album by my favorite Dutch band
everything by Yura Yura Teikoku that I've been able to get my grubby, little hands on - they're a "garage" rock band from Japan but they go way beyond the "garage" and I can't stop listening to them
Metallica St. Anger - I love it (and I've been a fan since Ride the Lightning so don't go jumping to conclusions)
Death The Sound of Perseverance - I've never cared for death metal much and always assumed these guys must suck but, aside from the "angry garden gnome" vocals, this just blew me away and has garnered mucho airplay at my house
Bic Runga Drive - singer/songwriter woman from New Zealand with an amazing voice and great songs
Dead Fingers Talk Storm the Reality Studios - UK "punk" band more influenced by Bowie & Reed & glam than The Sex Pistols or Ramones - I got the remaster of their lone album from 1978 (with bonus tracks) in 2000 and I still listen to it on a regular basis (I brought it to work today, in fact, and am going to listen to it when this Unorthodox CD ends)

Of the year = Xiu Xiu, A Promise and Deerhoof, Apple 'O. I don't even think of these as my all out favorites of the year, though they are up there. I just listen to them quite a bit.

As far as older albums, I don't usually listen to an entire album unless it's new to me. I always pick out a couple favorite tracks and listen to them repeatedly. Credit goes to a number of songs by Nina Simone, The Replacements, U2, Television, The Talking Heads, Sam Cooke, The Star Spangles (new, but I love a couple of their songs and some just don't touch me at all), and Otis Redding. Of course, I usually listen to all of The Pixies' Surfer Rosa and Prince's Purple Rain straight through, so those are my jams, as well.

Oh yeah, Ssion - "Who's Your Favorite, Baby?" is always being played.

I should add that I've been listening to a lot of Motorpsycho (the Norwegian band not the one from the US) this past year or so. I picked up Angels and Dæmons at Play a couple of years ago from a discount bin and loved it but didn't really get around to exploring their vast catalogue until recently. Their most recent album, It's a Love Cult, is a definite condender for my Top Ten of 2003.

True, there's something about cleaning the apartment / house that lends itself to indispensable albums.

Here's my high rotation regulars:

Frank Black - Teenager of the year
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
Trail of dead - Source tag and codes
Sonic youth - Murray Street
Bonnie Prince Billy - I see a darkness
Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Miles Davis - Kind of blue
John Coltrane - A love supreme
Stevie Wonder - Talking book
Pavement - Wowee Zowee
Carcass - Necroticism, descanting the insalubrious (best death / grindcore album ever, actually goes great with cleaning!)
