I was reading through a JSBX thread from a few weeks ago, and a link was posted to a Yahoo article on their recent show at the Mercury Lounge (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=769&ncid=768&e=2&u=/nm/20030915/music_nm/music_explosion_dc)

The last paragraph talks about how JSBX is unsure what label their new album will be on, and how they have always done one-offs with Matador. My question is this: Is this a normal kind of contract? Or do you lock up your highest selling bands to multi-year deals? With such youth and promise, will Interpol be receiving an A-Rod contract soon, or do indie labels have their own version of baseball's pre-free agency reserve system?

Sorry if something like this has been asked before.

just kidding.

Our contracts vary wildly, usually depending on sales histories, expectations, financial demands and who-is-holding-the-hammer. Sometimes they are one-offs, sometimes they go on and on and on.

In the case of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, we certainly hope to continue our fruitful relationship with the band until either of us are dead or in prison.
