oooohhh...
thanks for shedding some light on that for me.
lots of cds use that these days. and here i was thinking it was something special. (it is cooler than just a jewel case tho..)
I find cd get scratched more easily in them though.

does stephen malkmus not like the environment or something, his newest album wasn't on digipack and i was surprised because most of the matador albums i've been getting come that way, so i'm sure he is aware of it.
maybe he knows caring about the environment is so 90's.
The initial pressing of the Malkmus record is a digi (with bonus disc not available with the jewel case version).

when done well, there's not much better in the CD-packaging world.
the only problem is that if it gets messed up, that's it. If a jewel case gets scratched and the artwork's OK, you just get a new jewel case, but a cracked center spindle on a digipak is a monstrous pain in the ass.
all in all though, I prefer them.

that's why you should always handle your cds with great care! yeah! i wipe em off with a dry cloth daily.
err...digipaks are nice, and not more vulnerable than, say, an LP.
question: is that why the malkmus-digipack is more expensive? or is that because of the bonus disc? or is it because european record stores suck?

The Malkmus digipak was the same price as the jewelcase version of the album, even though it did cost more to produce (due to the extra disk).
By the way, here's the scoop on digipak cost: they come to the same as jewelcase/booklet packages IF you make enough of them. This means that they're economical upon release, but much more expensive to do for subsequent (usually much smaller) reorders. This is why we move to jewel for the second pressing.

Hmph. I thought my jewel case pressing of Alien Lanes was sort of cool, because all I ever see are digipak copies in the stores. If my copy's the second pressing, did you guys go back to digipak for a third (or fourth) pressing?
Until recently I thought Alien Lanes was only in Digi-pak as that's what my copy is, and I got mine from a store here in the uk a couple of years ago.

It doesn't matter how careful you are, digipacks just don't hold up well over time. My copy of "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out" doesn't look so good, even though I am ridiculously careful and protective when it comes to my collection. Jewel cases can be replaced, so I say out with digipacks!

I seem to remember that we did a jewelcase pressing somewhere else - perhaps in Europe, Paul - early on. (Thought this doesn't square with Ladt's experience.)
But in the US, it was digipak first, then jewel.
