I'm a big fan of Pavement, Pixies, Replacements and Modest Mouse. I haven't bought any new CD's in a while...anyone have some recommendations of something I might like?

Cheers!

The Fiery Furnaces debut album, Gallowsbird's Beak. Rules school.

The new Wrens album, The Meadowlands, is pretty rockin'.

well, since you mentioned the Replacements, I can't recommend Paul Westerberg's recent solo output enough. Last year's Stereo with its (not very) secret 2nd disc, Mono, under the Grandpaboy name, is phenomenal. The new one, Come Feel Me Tremble is pretty great too. not as good, but better than most things.

um.. lets see, what else...

I'd recommend looking into Archers of Loaf if you haven't yet in your life, especially Vee Vee, All The Nations Airports and the ... vs. The Greatest Of All Time CDep. Some top-notch shit there.

The new(er) Lilys album, Precollection is one of my favorites of the year.

There's tons more, but that's what pops in my head right now...

I'll second the Paul Westerberg recommendations; there is this really great anthem-rocker on his latest -Come Feel Me Tremble- called "Making Me Go" that'll have you reaching for the repeat button.

The Star Spangles album Bazooka!!! is another great place for Replacements fans to go. When I first reviewed this record I talked about how Westerberg never had a better impersonator but that it was a weakness in its own way. I've since bagged that opinion and found that this disc is pretty much crammed forward-to-back with crunchy pop gems. Definitely check this out; it'll probably make my top 10 for the year.

I really dig the Star Spangles record too, vesper. I did a rough cut of my top ten already, and it didn't quite make it -- but the year's not over.

"Which One Of The Two Of Us Is Gonna Burn This House Down" is the best Replacements song Westerberg never wrote.

for all the recommendations so far! Yes, I agree...Archers of Loaf are classic! I consider Icky Mettle right up there with Slanted and Enchanted as THE indie rock album. Will check out The Star Spangles. As far as Paul Westerberg goes...I haven't bought Come Feel Me Tremble or his blues album. I've heard some of the songs and I just couldn't bear it. I long for another, "Unsatisfied", "Answering Machine"-->my all time favorite song EVER, or "Color Me Impressed"...but I know those days are gone. Sigh.

Anyway, I will be curious as to what others have to post here!

Thanks again!

Definitely try "Chutes Too Narrow" by The Shins. My favorite of the year.

is the new Modest Mouse album. Whenever that comes out, I will be a happy man. Love the Mouse! To bad Matador doesn't have them signed on their label.

They DO (or did?) in Europe.

I love Modest Mouse almost as much as I love having my testicles smashed with a sledgehammer.

Not as a challenge, but what is yr beef w/ Brock and co.? I know you said something about loathing them when I first came to this board but I never heard why? Anything specific or just a general dislike for their music?

To my ears, they shamelessly rip off Built to Spill and Archers of Loaf and pass it off as something novel and new. The worst song by either of those bands is still better than the best Modest Mouse track.

Plus, Isaac Brock is a spoiled brat with a terrible voice.

Don't bag on Modest Mouse. They don't deserve it. check out The Forms- Icarus. They're on Threespheres. Everybody should check them out. Even if you don't like Modest Mouse. Hey... Matador, you should look into signing The Forms... that would be an upgrade for them.

I don't bag on Modest Mouse unless someone else brings them up first. (Well, okay...on occasion I've been known to bag on them without any prior mention).

Oh, and Matador loves having suggestions about bands they should sign. Why don't you list a few more?

If you like the Pixies then check out Danielson Famile. Here's a pretty cool song by 'em:

Right now, I'd recommend for you The Exploding Hearts. They only released one album this year but if you didn't hear, 3 of their members died when their van rolled over.

Is that The Pixies distributed to Jesus Lizard + The Pixies distributed to Shellac = McLusky?

Band math is confusing...especially when it involves multiplication.
