is the 'white label' an actual label, or is just lingo?

from what i've read i'm getting that a release on white label tends to be a single, and there is no label on the single-- so really it's an anonymous single

"don't bomb when you're the bomb" was a white label release, and !!! are saying they're going to release a single on the white label

thanks

In the world of dance and hip hop 12"es, you can take it to mean private pressing. They are occasionally financed by real record labels who don't put their logos on the records, for underground credibility, or because the tracks include uncleared samples or cameos by artists signed to other labels.

The practice goes back to the '80s. Prior to that, most labels had special "promo" versions of their record labels that were colored white. This may be the origin of the white label look, or it may just be a label with nothing on it (or just a couple more-or-less descriptive words).
