Yeah, I do now. Sorry, I guess I don't spend as waste as much time on forum boards discussing asinine topics as you do.

the answer: NO. people calling other people lame for being on the internet while being on the internet themselves is one of life's little pleasurable ironies.

It's even better when they're too pissed to type a coherent sentence! Or a logical one.

Good god, this topic is such a bummer.
If I'm going to bust on someone, I may as well download the songs.
First up..."Ice Age."
Nope. I'm not going to get any further than this. Effect-heavy swinging guitar jam instrumental. How original. Hope you've got a day job.

Track 1 - Repetition bothers me when it's over-the-top --- just my opinion, you asked for it.
Track 2 - Singer needs some vocal mix magic. Nuff said.
Track 3 - This is your most interesting piece. Funny enough, as I was typing this, I thought I was listenting to you but it was really Pierre Bensusan - Bamboule ---- so it was not in fact you. So now I know I am listening to you --- and it's not so bad. I still don't care for the vocals so much.
Track 4 - Could do without the male screaming on occassion. Needs most help: songwriting. What's needs the least help: drumming.
Overall, you remind me of Emmet Swimming from DC/VA/MD area ---- except I like his voice better.

Its a sad state when mere conversation becomes something reprehensible.
case in point:
you're at a party having a conversation, someone joins in briefly, then leaves. Then they come back and you're still discussing the same issue, and they say "you guys are *still* on this?"
as if caring about something enough to talk about it at length betrays you as a square. whatevs.

man i really don't think anybody should be giving this guy any response. It'll only egg him on. This kinda shit sould really start to clutter up the board if we're not careful. I say let his demo sit on a pile with the rest of the unsolicited demos. Or let him pay for an attorney or a manager to solicit that shit. Or let him actually get the kind of fan base that attracts attention to a band the right way... by bustin his ass and playing any and everywhere he can. Just my opinion though.

I think this thread is so hilarious I'm going to leave it up.
and tino, I fully agree with you about conversations and lengthy discussions. What is it about enthusiasm that scares people?

hey patrick, matador does try to listen to all the unsolicited stuff still right? I know you don't give feedback on it, but i thought someone's ears over there gave it at least a few seconds. This kinda seems like cutting in line to me.

yardley,
I wish I could say we did try to listen to all the unsolicited stuff, but we don't. We release about 12 albums a year and our schedule is booked up for the foreseeable future, especially because we have a few deals currently in negotiation.
We receive literally hundreds of demos each month, and they are literally 99.999% terrible. No judgment on any of you regulars out there who are musicians, but trust me, most demos come from people who have never heard of Matador, have no idea even what genres of music we typically put out, and are just sending their package to every label listed in the Billboard directory. We prefer to listen to good music and the best way to do this, sadly, is not to listen to demos.
Historically we've signed virtually nobody off unsolicited demos (Bettie Serveert, Liz Phair and Solex are the exceptions, but we did know something about the former two already when we chose their demo cassettes out of the pile).
We find bands through seeing them play live, through friends, and from buying self-released 7"es and CDs or stuff on other labels... or finding cool stuff on the web.
In general, the active mode of discovering music - going out there and finding it - suits us much better than the passive mode - waiting for packages to arrive in the mail.
My advice to any band wanting to get signed to an indie label: release your own records, set up a great website, play out in your local area, get on a tour with a known band, and build your reputation yourself up to a certain base level.

i think the fear of enthusiam comes from the fact that many people are riddle with self-doubt. Sure an idea may seem good at first, but the realization of ideas takes lotsa work, and usually comes with points where it just doesn't feel as good as when that inital spark came. But I've always thought that anyone who's created anything worth a dime has had to work through this, as well they should.

What's up guys. Sorry for any misunderstanding, I don't want to sound like a pretentious asshole. I know my remark makes me seem like a hypocrite, I was just a bummed at Paul's negative response of "Hey fucko." Anyways, I appreciate the feedback, even though it isn't as positive as I would hope. What about the songwriting don't you like? I like the cryptic vagueness of it personally. I agree, song number one certainly isn't the most original. And it's strange that you point out the drums, because other's have remarked that they sound pretty shitty. This is simply a demo effort after less than two months as a band. We didn't spend a lot of time mixing it. I know that the vocals are too loud and the drums need a better tone. Anyways, sorry for getting off on the wrong foot here, and I'd still love to hear more feedback, even if you think we suck terribly.

It's all personal taste pal. Don't be offended because some fucko didn't like your stuff nor should you be overly elated that someone tossed you a nice line. Do what you feel. Do what inspires you. In reality, it really doesn't matter what anyone here really thinks. You asked for it you basically saw responses that characterizes the personalities of people here.
But in my opinion, which you did ask for, the drumming is what seems to need the least improvement. Don't go posting links to your own personal music on message boards without being able to fully ingest what the outcome might be ---- especially this one.

There's a fine line between enthusiastic and eccentric. One scares me, one doesn't.

Could someone in the office take the time to scan and upload all the pictures of the Band Photo Hall of Fame that you get from demos? I was going to say that "i know it might come back to haunt you", but now i actually think that the resulting avalanche of hysterical band photos wouldn't be so bad. They are just too good to be kept in the radio dept.
