so the GBV album made Magnet's embarrassing Top 20 list... so did Interpol. but there was no Spoon or Songs: Ohia recognition, and they picked the Anniversary and Aimee Mann as two of the top 20 albums? whatever Magnet had, they've lost it.

I don't think the article is on-line. Yo La Tengo's the Sounds of the Sounds of Science did make "Honorable Mention" status.

Guided by Voices
Interpol
Damien Jurado
Aimee Mann

it was as though they asked Gideon from MTV2 to write their list for them.

Wow! Gideon from MTV. Yeah, I agree. They totally missed Kill the Moonlight.

I guess I'm really out of the loop. I own a grand total of one of their top 20 (Queens of the Stone Age). Then again, it's tied with I Name You Destroyer by Jucifer for my favorite album of the year.

Hmmm, maybe its me but the list doesn't seem that bad. Of course, I've only heard 4 of those albums. And some obvious albums are missing, like the flaming lips.

and besides, its just one magazine's opinion, and I'm kinda glad that a lot of the usual suspects (Spoon, Flaming Lips etc.) weren't on it, not that I don't think they should be (I think the Spoon is one of the top if not THE top of last year), but because it actually reflects a position that differs a little.

would Gideon Yaho have picked:
Neko Case
Damien Jurado
Aimee Mann
Mendoza Line

Those are names that aren't really frequenting the top 10's or 20's, you know...

So yeah, go Magnet. Magazines aren't arbiters, they're just giving their opinion, and its up to you to make up your own mind. I still think they cover more interesting music more interestingly than most magazines of its caliber.
