i'd never heard "midas touch" until the mix, but i ID'd it early by googling the lyrics and i then watched the original video & song on youtube. imho, it is awesome in any form.

re: ny house, apparently my possible moment has not completely passed? according to resident advisor (heh), jus-ed and his affiliates are doing quite a job of reviving the form. i guess house of house & still going fall in this camp as well? i gotta check 'em out whenever they play again... maybe at the bunker or something? the jus-ed tracks i've heard weren't doing a whole lot for me, though, so...

speaking of still going, their new single on dfa is excellent.

and speaking of dfa, the walter jones 12" is totally underrated. the instrumental re-work is kinda meh, but the two vocal tracks ("living without your love" and "i'll keep on loving you") are probably my favorite songs of the year.

from what i could gather online, the writer of the song, "killer whale," is arthur russell.

just discovered personal rock by gramm (jan jelinek). man, this thing is a gem along the lines of pole 1, 2, 3. no wonder jelinek is on ~scape. how is the rest of his output under his various guises (including his actual name)?

have you heard textstar, released under jan jelinek's farben alias? it's a collection of nine tracks released between 1998-2002, and perhaps some of the best minimal i've heard. i'd pretty much given up on caring about the minimal/micro stuff outside of, like, immer and some other kompakt releases, but the tracks on textstar sound, to quote dj /rupture, so future stupid. (that's a good thing.)

i also like tierobachtungen released under his own name. it's very chill and ambient but nonetheless engaging. la nouvelle pauvrete, released under jan jelinek avec the exposures (the exposures are his fake live band), is GREAT. as far as i can tell, this dude has done no wrong.

oooh, no, i'm pretty sure that they are all still in print. i bought la nouvelle pauvrete on CD at other music and bought the other two records from mp3 stores. i'm positive that tierbeobachtungen isn't hard or expensive to track down on CD, although the farben release seems a bit tougher. i also noticed that ~scape re-issued one of his early releases, loop finding jazz records, in 2008, so i'll have to pick that one up too.

that gramm record, on the other hand, is running near $100 for a used CD. what the hell.

as many mixes as i've listened to this year, i'm actually kinda struggling to remember which ones were really stupendous. so far, these are the ones that stick out in my head. add to it!

timeblind's mahout mix (things dubstep)
lamin fofana's recession rap mix (http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/30716) on wfmu's mudd up! (3/19/09) (hip hop)
henrik schwarz, ame, and dixon, the grandfather paradox (things minimal)
house of house mix for little white earbuds (deep house)
optimo synth summer mix (things synth)

two great bass music mixes via the dutty artz family: cauto's november 2009 mix (http://nyc.duttyartz.com/mp3s/cauto__november_2009_mix__mrgasparov.com.mp3) for mr. gasparov & matt shadetek's secret knowledge (http://www.duttyartz.com/2009/s3cr3t-kn0w13dg3/) mix. i'm listening to the cauto mix now - starts off with some achingly sweet and fast-footed dubstep tunes and currently is in a slightly darker, more abstract space. shadetek's mix is just NASTY, way more of a uk funky vibe. really digging both.

king midas sound's fact mix is also solid. never turn down a mix that features sade.

i've fallen behind on the RA podcasts as of late, but did download the psychonauts one earlier this morning when i saw you posted about it. i'll probably listen to it tomorrow.

i was enjoying redshape's "twilight zone in rabbit holes" (http://mnmlssg.blogspot.com/2010/01/mx48-redshape-tracklisting.html) mix for mnml ssgs yesterday. it's much more of a "populist" mix, if that makes any sense. what i mean is that it has two radiohead tracks. but those 154 tracks on there hit like monster trucks made of the softest pillows.

have you heard dj sprinkles "masturjakor," 9000? recorded during the midtown 120 blues sessions but left off the album because it didn't quite fit. very jackin', and as good as anything on the full length.

that psychonauts mix is pretty good, though i gotta say it kinda felt like mixes i was buying and downloading ~2005-2007. i mean that in a good way. there's just something about its pacing that took me back there. this may be due to the fact that the only other context i have for the psychonauts is through superpitcher's today mix.

no lie, when i first read your post above, 9000, i read it as "dj hell/bobby mcferrin song" and one eyebrow shot up. what's the story w/ this track?

yesterday in the mail i received dual nature by lerosa, which is on ... tape. i thought this was some kid, but i was surprised to find out that he's released a pretty decent number of eps and 12"s since 2005. i was a little skeptical of the fact that it's on tape, as well, but actually the slightly dampened sound works really well with his style of dub techno. i'm going to make a delicious meal while i listen to this.

oh, and i wanted to add, the first 30 minutes of the psychonauts mix is particularly good. i was happy when he dropped down four tet's "love cry," because i've been listening to there is love in you non-stop since i picked it up on tuesday, and "love cry" is a highlight on an already pretty stupendous album.

9000
01-29-2010, 03:45 PM
that's funny, because i also thought it sounded a bit dated, however, unlike for you, it didn't really kick-in until after the 30 minute mark for me.

there is love in you is doing nothing for me. all in the head, nothing below.

goddamn, i'm a big fan of "rushing to paradise (walking these streets)" on its own, but that dj harvey mix is something else! thanks for that. i definitely need to pick up the 12" now that (or as soon as) they've repressed it.

there is love in you works really well for me, i think, because i've been listening to cluster and other twinkly psychedelic shit lately. in my mind, it splits the difference between, i don't know, teutonic pastoralism and dusty house music. and "love cry," god, it's just a beautiful pile-up that feels really controlled without coming off as studied or sterile. but yeah, i guess other than "love cry," it really isn't for the lower body. i listen to it on the train, walking the street, and when i'm editing.

i doubt anyone gives much of a damn, but i pre-ordered that opera by the knife & co., tomorrow, in a year, and it's pretty much all i've listened to since last thursday. the title track hits me in a really visceral way that i don't know how to explain to myself, probably because i don't know enough music theory. it's pretty special though - the kind of thing i want to play for people who've never heard it before and say, "listen! listen!!" right before something really cool happens.

Calm down and play nice for god's sake. You're so abrasive sometimes.

There's no comparison to, say, Michael Mayer doing a club set and playing outdoors in the blazing sunshine. The nature of these things is that you hang out and kick back, paying less attention to the music than you would at a club and not much pounding the dancefloor.

I'm just saying those djs would be far more enjoyable in club environment. Seems a waste to put them on in the daytime when most people don't really care who's on and are there for the crack.

:) i was gonna say, i always heard it was demdike something-else, but i figured you knew.

that james blake remix of "maybes" wasn't doing much for me at first, but it's really grown on me since i bought the ep a week ago. i think i like it at this point because i can't figure out its function. like, the falty dl (who i otherwise love) remix just feels a little like whatever nth degree of burial; instra:mental's remix makes the most "sense" for dancing. but james blake's mix is attractive precisely because it's so singular. i can't imagine how you'd use it (now watch: someone will post a tracklist to some mix where it is used).

big ups to matador on those optimo remixes of cold cave, btw. they are so dope. maybe i should take this to a related forum...

i made an 8tracks mix (http://8tracks.com/pleasecomeflying/nerves) of 2010 techno, dub-techno, and uk bass, most of which freaked me out at some point over the course of the year. it's a little bleak. i could've called it "no sun," or something else like that.

8tracks is set up so that, after the first playback, the tracks come up in random order. it's not like it's continuously mixed or anything, and the vibes stay pretty consistent, but still the order should be:

ame - "rrose selavy"
actress - "lost"
ross 154 - "until my hearts stops" (re-issue)
oni ayhun - "oar004-a"
t++ - "voices no bodies"
james blake - "the bells sketch"
demdike stare - "forest of evil (dawn)"
roll the dice - "the new black"

vesper
11-07-2010, 01:43 AM
hey patrick, let's talk about the occult dub-techno stylings of demdike stare. you like these guys, right? fiona and 9000 can't handle the darkness.

i recently picked up symbiosis, the full-length from 2009, which is pretty great and all, but hardly anything on the two eps from this year, forest of evil and liberation through hearing. this is my late-night, lights-out, headphones-on shit right now.

i feel like tinobeat might not get into this group as a whole, but would definitely feel a couple of their tracks. one of the members digs up obscure and OOP records for the finders keepers label to reissue, so i guess they pull a lot of their samples from whatever he finds. a track like "jannisary," for instance, sounds like it fell off this season's dopest world psych compilation. they produce something so unrelentingly creepy and uncanny through their treatment of samples, though, that i'm also reminded of the ghost box label (the study series from this year especially, but also the advisory circle's other channels and broadcast's album with the focus group come to mind at points).

"forest of evil (dawn)," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKrpwRV3O7I) which i also put on my 8tracks mix above, is just (((d-_-b))) for all time. (the video is highly, highly nsfw.)

i'm not familiar enough with janet jackson's early career to hear similarities between their vocals, but i like the comparison!

-edit-

not all of his stuff, no, but a lot of his best tracks. until he started uploading to beatport, it was notoriously difficult to get his records. you should read an interview with the guy - hilarious stuff.

Did you read the shit people are saying already about the Fabric Mix? A few assholes are talking about "Oh, Omar-S. He did the same thing as Ricardo Vi-vi--...." whatever the fuck he's called. I don't even know who Ricardo Willalobo is. I ain't start hearing his name till like a year ago. Who the fuck is that? So how would I know what he did for Fabric? I don't even know how to say his last name, why would I bite off of him?

Getting into Demdike Stare really hard, been listening to the Liberation Through Hearing LP and the new LP is on its way in the mail.

Also in thread-relevant stuff I've been feeling the King Midas Sounds 2LP a bunch. Definitely just starting to scratch the surface of this dark bassy ambient biz. Any other things I should be looking into?

awesome!! i haven't ordered the next demdike stare lp yet. i'm thinking about waiting until the 3xCD, triptych, comes out in january, because it will collect the 3 eps from this year with some bonus material.

you're talking about king midas sound's waiting for you, right? i never got around to picking that up, but i do have the "cool out" single and the "dub heavy - hearts and ghosts" ep. good stuff.

as for recommendations...i don't know, both king midas sound and demdike stare are pretty singular in what they do. you might like rhythm & sound's with the artists or versions (the latter is basically the instrumental version of the former) -- really grainy, thick dub from the basic channel guys. i'll try to think of some other stuff.

Yeah, this is the sense I'm getting, that they're not really artists with a lot of RIYL type things surrounding them.

I just like how goddamn spooky they get without being clownish.

Definitely need to look more into all the Basic Channel stuff, I've learned.

king midas sound did a mix for fact magazine last year that was voted best of 2009. assuming it should still be on the site, if you're interested. unfortunately, they don't do much for me.

if you want to hear that fact mix and can't find it, tinobeat, let me know and i'll upload it for you. i still have it on my computer.

i realized earlier today that there's a chance you'd like some of shackleton's tracks. his stuff isn't quite in that ambient/dub vein that demdike stare and king midas sound circulate within, but it has a similar creepy saturation effect. and rhythmically, his tracks are fucking bonkers. three eps on perlon was one of my favorite albums of 2009. two good tracks are "asha in the tabernacle" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euo4s6OuaaU) (just listen to what he does with the choir sample) and "let go."

whoah, that track is dope as hell - thanks for passing it along. gunnar wendel is also kassem mosse, btw. he's such a great artist.

have any of you listened to lone? i picked up two of his singles - "joyreel"/"sunset teens" and "once in a while"/"raptured" - but haven't made up my mind on them. i kind of like that he sounds like he makes perversely wrong deep house...i mean, there's NO space in any of the tracks and it often sounds more woozy than spiritual. everything is shoved so far up in the mix that the sounds start to muffle each other and produce some unexpected and kinda cool rhythmic effects. still, it feels a little one dimensional and limited in terms of where it can go. "once in a while" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy-7LIxvygw) is his biggest track, i think. i'm going to keep an eye on him.

oh, tinobeat, did you get a copy of the new demdike stare lp? i thought i could wait for the 3xCD, but i guess not. i've been playing it and the raime ep back to back lately. "repository of light" might be DS's most straight up beautiful track yet.

i liked the omar s. remix of that gunnar wendel/kassem mosse track so much that i bought it this morning. the "rude boy warm mix" on the b-side is even slower and druggier.

did y'all see that teen panther sounds/matador's own teengirl fantasy topped FACT's best songs of 2010 list with "cheaters?" i think 7 AM was somewhere in the top 20 of their album's list, too, but i can't check because their website is taking a long time to load.

i mean, there's NO space in any of the tracks [...] everything is shoved so far up in the mix that the sounds start to muffle each other and produce some unexpected and kinda cool rhythmic effects.

i guess this is called sidechain compression? i realize upon re-reading my post that it isn't the case that there's "NO space in any of [lone's] tracks." it's more that certain sounds shove certain other sounds out of the mix for a moment, thus producing some implied (?) sense of expansion and contraction. i think this is what i meant when i said that it produces some other rhythmic effects than what's there in the beat.

can someone explain this to me? i don't have a vocabulary for this stuff, so i'm really reaching to find a language to describe how it feels when i listen to it.

ame's fact mix (http://www.factmag.com/2011/01/10/fact-mix-212-ame/) is apparently going to be released later this year as primary structures on innervisions, which is, uh, a little weird to do. if anyone liked the grandfather paradox, and who wouldn't?, you probably won't be disappointed by this mix. but you might not be wildly thrilled by it either (just saying). the mix did convince me that i need to pick up that ndf 12" on dfa next time i'm in a record store.

vesper
03-07-2011, 02:58 PM
what are y'all listening to in 2011?

not long ago, dfa uploaded a new track to their soundcloud. it's called "doorway" (http://soundcloud.com/dfa-records/planningtorock-doorway) and it's by planningtorock, one of the knife's collaborators on tomorrow, in a year. there's not much to dance to here, but i like the dirtiness of its sounds.

speaking of dirty sounds, there's some truly cosmic crust on "acid bathory" (http://soundcloud.com/hugh_like/chasing-voices-acidbathory) by chasing voices.

less dirty, but not exactly clean, is TEETH's "shawty," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSOV3LnL_0k) which i don't know if anyone else will like that much? i'm a sucker for minimally constructed tracks that unfold the beat through mechanical, clockwork hi-hats. that chasing voices track appeals to me in a similar way, but does some other notable things, too.

and finally, the two shackleton eps that honest jon's put out this year, fireworks and deadman, are brilliant.

9000
03-21-2011, 08:54 PM
i actually like that teeth song the most of the three you mention. totally trippy, abstracted detroit sound. on the other hand, i can't get into that planningtorock song--AT ALL.

as for listening, not too much yet this year, though as of late, i've really been into disco edits, particularly those of jacques renault and tiger & woods.

both of those are nice, but the tiger & woods is really something. it looks like they're putting out a single on running back, which is funny, because i came here to post about todd terje's new tunes (http://running-back-records.tumblr.com/post/3704294397/todd-terje-snooze-4-love-running-back-b1) on the same label.

i think you'll like those wolf + lamb vs. soul clap eps that i mentioned on the listening pile thread, 9000. i can hook you up if you want.

soul clap ft. charles levine - "lonely c" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12WXjVjQEnc)

also, i think you'll like that virgo four record i mentioned. here's an nsfw-ish video that features mario montez in one of warhol's films! this isn't necessarily representative of the whole comp, but it's a good song nonetheless.

virgo four - "sex" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_g6dggiqFQ)

well, you should check out some of the other stuff on the record, because at least half of it is instrumental. in fact, not every track that has vocals has the same vocalist, i think, since the collection is made up of unreleased tracks from '84-90.

as for the video, it was done by this collective that makes high quality but unofficial videos for whatever house and techno they're enjoying. that dj sprinkles track that i think i put on your facebook page last year was made by the same folks.

i'm feeling hype williams and faltyDL lately. i might prefer faltyDL's remixes to his original work, but everything he's done so far has been pretty high quality as far as i can tell. hype williams makes a fucked up little sonic world.

the sound of summer is on the other side of this link (http://dismagazine.com/disco/mixes/14817/nguzunguzu-the-perfect-lullaby/) btw.

9000
03-28-2011, 08:53 PM
most of the edits aren't even formally released because of copyright issues--like that ariel pink one i posted on fb today. others are white labeled. i usually just get them from mixes, soundcloud, facebook, twitter, etc. typically, djs release them directly via those avenues.

braille, the year 3000 12"
wolfram FT. HADDAWAY - "thing called love (legowelt remix)" <- fuiud
deniz kurtel, music in mind
bural, street halo ep
invisible conga people, in a hole ep
tom trago, voyage direct remixes
hype williams, one nation

i walked around listening to house of house's "walking these streets (rushing to paradise)" after not hearing it for awhile, and it was perfect in today's weather.

i'm working on one! i'll post it when i finish.

last night i got my tickets for the mister sunday opening party. LET THE SUMMER BEGIN.

vesper
05-30-2011, 01:25 PM
the dance floor was a little too crowded yesterday, but overall the mister sunday party was rad: good vibes, good music (good food, i assume, since i didn't eat any of it, but wanted some).

four tet's set wasn't revelatory or anything but it was really solid throughout. he moved from some bass heavy new wave (i.e., an edit of "once in a lifetime" that, for some reason, everyone pogo-ed around to; that was a bit of a head-scratcher) to some recent house and uk bass (burial's "street halo" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spNJX7e0z4E) worked wonders [hint: start at 1:35]) and then a stretch of afropop and afrobeat that reached it's peak with an insane remix of what i think was a nina simone song. things wound down with "moth" but then revved back up again when he capped off the night with (i think?) a james brown edit that rode a loop of the break really hard. it sounded like funk falling down a spiral staircase, and it was awesome.

i'm really curious to see what some of the other parties are like. this one was crowded to the point that you couldn't exactly dance-dance*, but i don't if that was because it was the opening or what. space dimension controller is next week, so i might try to make that one, too, while i still have the money to go.

*also, a note to any/all of the dudes who just stand there in the middle of the dance floor: fucking stop doing that; nod somewhere else.

pabost
05-31-2011, 11:13 AM
How much do the parties cost? I'm hoping to go on June 19 when I'm in town.

9000
05-31-2011, 01:37 PM
i think $10.

vesper
05-31-2011, 06:51 PM
yeah, $10 if you order tickets early enough online (+$1.50 service fee), $12 if later. but, i think it might also be $10 the day of if you show up before 5pm, so there doesn't seem like much of a point in purchasing online w/ the service fee.

if you want to be safe and order online, you can get tickets through resident advisor's events page (http://www.residentadvisor.net/events.aspx).

is a new mbb meet-up in order?

vesper
05-31-2011, 06:58 PM
actually, you know what, i was just scanning over the summer calendar, and there may not be a mister sunday party on june 19th. the hosts, justin carter and eamon harkin, are throwing their other party, mister saturday night, on the 18th. but maybe they just haven't announced the other one yet. i'll keep an eye out for it.

there are four really good parties next week: peter van hoesen at the bunker (public assembly) on friday; ame somewhere tba on saturday; dj sprinkles and tim sweeney at cameo on saturday; and mister sunday again on sunday. choices, choices.

i thought space dimension controller had an awesome set today, but i'm surprised he stopped after an hour or so. that was sorta disappointing until justin carter and eamon harkin got back up and just destroyed it. like, seriously you guys. i had a blast. word to the wise: if you crank oni ayhun's "oar-003" (http://youtu.be/Y20xhvbDZBc) for almost its entire 12 minute duration, i will go bonkers on your dancefloor. hands in the air and all.

i was thinking about skipping next week's mister sunday party because the only people djing are carter and harkin, but now i'm not sure. they really got things going in the last hour, so it might really be worth it.

i just got this message. hey pabost, it looks like there will be a mister sunday party on the 18th after all. i'm still planning to attend the other party the night before, so i don't think i'll make it out on sunday. but maybe?

Hey, folks.

Bad news first or good news first? Okay, bad news first... but then lots of good news!

Bad news: Luke Vibert, our guest on Saturday night, has had his visa delayed, so he won't make it to the States this weekend.

The good news is that he's not been denied, just delayed, so it won't be long before we can announce another date that he'll join us. We'll let you know as soon as that happens. The other good news is that the party will go on under the open skies at Brooklyn Fire Proof as planned, and it'll be cheaper because we don't have the extra expenses associated with having a guest, so you can still come get your Saturday Night dance on. To alleviate any confusion, all tickets purchased will be refunded, and we won't do any advance ticket sales for Saturday. Just RSVP to mister@mistersaturdaynight.com for reduced admission before midnight, and we'll see you down there!

Could there possibly be more good news? Yes. You can join us down at the Grove for Mister Sunday the next day as well, where 10% of all the proceeds from the door will go to Malaria No More, an organization aimed at wiping out malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. There's a little bit more info about them down below.

We'll see you this weekend... or next weekend, when we're playing with Moodymann! The good news just doesn't stop.

Love,

Mister Saturday Night

pabost
06-17-2011, 01:54 PM
Vesper, thanks for the heads up. Gonna try to make the party but we'll see if it pans out. I always end up thinking I can do more to my short trips to NYC than is actually possible. Plus, this weekend is especially tentative given some shit that's gonna go down.

Unrelated

I'm djing a couple weddings in the upcoming months. They want the hits, and I'll play them gladly, but let me know of any jams you guys suggest I sneak in the mix that will keep the party rocking but add a little spice to the party. I'm thinking stuff a la "Hold On" by Holy Ghost. Thanks.

vesper

do you prefer tracks with vocals? i heard lcd soundsystem's "yeah" for the first time in years while out last night and i was quickly reminded of just how monumentally large that track is. it was a good way to close a set, so maybe consider that...even though it's a bit old? i get the impression from your post that people won't be reeling for the newest stuff anyway. "reckless with your love" by azari and iii might also fit the bill.

if you want to dabble in something a little trackier but still poppy, todd terje's "snooze 4 love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQx5EAfirhc) is a tune.

i know i have other stuff to recommend. i'll post some more in the next day or two.

9000, did you get out for moodymann? i'm trying to figure out if i have it in me to do warm up AND mister sunday this weekend. you in?

i recently pulled out michael mayer's immer and total 6 for old time's sake, and i gotta say, i forgot how many bangers are on these. that transition in immer from "toaster" to "you don't need a weatherman (superpitcher remix)," that is, the transition that's just birds chirping, is a musical peak of some sort.

i do admit that i cringed a little when i just thought to myself that some track on total 6 was complete garbage, then realized that i was listening to rex the dog, and remembered how much i used to love that stuff. i guess i'll have to dig out some of those other tracks to see if they've held up a little better.

pabost, i haven't forgotten about that list of other tracks. i've just been busy.

-edit-

whoah. about a week or two ago, i had a short vocal running through my head that i couldn't quite place. i chalked it up to something i'd heard in a mix while doing other stuff. it turns out that it's that vocal and piano sample that runs throughout superpitcher's "tell me about it" - a song that, until today, i haven't knowingly listened to in years. o_O

nah, no bklyn yard for me last sunday--i hit the beach! yeah, i'm in for PS1 this upcoming saturday. not sure about sunday, though.

pabost: for the most part, i can't stand holy ghost, but "hold on" is pretty a'ight. "beam me up" is the jammy-jam, so good call there. a couple of other grandma-friendly wedding jams:

i fully endorse all those youtubes. it occurs to me that i haven't heard anything by holy ghost other than "hold on" and maybe one other track.

here's something, pabost: "the l word" by deniz kurtel;
-Ti9lDl0hZ8

and "forward motion" by hot natured;
CQWlZqIdHOM

and on the still going tip, "walkin' these streets (rushing to paradise)" by house of house

patrick, you should come out to mister sunday today. if i don't hear todd terje's "snooze 4 love," i'm going to throw one of those park-slope-parent sports-utility-strollers into the gowanus. it'll at least be a sight.

vesper

no "snooze 4 love," but i couldn't find a throwable stroller either.

but todd terje killed it. this track was properly massive on that soundsystem:

oh god, i'm dying over here! btw, i also saw you in one of the youtube videos that someone posted to the mister saturday night FB page, 9000.

i'm getting deeply into any- and everything that's in even the most remote proximity to wolf + lamb and soul clap. those dj kicks eps and the dj kicks mix itself; their appearance on beats in space; the baby prince podcast on louche (http://www.louchemusic.com/podcast/Baby-Prince/); deniz kurtel's music on my mind; art department's the drawing board; and all of benoit & sergio's eps and singles: this stuff feels like perfect music to me right now.

-edit-

i still need to hear the nicolas jaar record though.

on the wolf+lamb universe, the many podcasts on their website (here (http://www.wolflambmusic.com/), now you have no excuse) are worth spending some time with. the mixes by voices of black, lee foss, and slow hands are all really good. i'll probably listen to maayan nidam, no regular play, and greg paulus later.

clapz ii dogz - "the rain." extensive new edition sample. skip to 2:20 if you're impatient.
2qZqa_c5Od0

steve moore - "zero-point field." 9000, i'm pretty sure this is the track that the dj left playing on sunday while that guy set up his synths. also, that guy might've been steve moore.
dnPdP2NQ_Ec

daniel bortz - "other guys." extensive cassie sample.
d1y3KEICLS0

raze - "break 4 love (soul clap main mix)." (http://soundcloud.com/championrecords/break-4-love-soul-clap-main) an update on a classic.

9000, have you listened to that mcde dj kicks yet? it's got a new track of his that's a killer. i'll put up some other mixes later this week.

of course patrick's aspetto gloria mix is all anyone needs this year, but i'm going to make this monster post anyway...

it hit me that the only 2011 commercial mix i've regularly returned to is the wolf+lamb vs. soul clap dj kicks. that motor city drum ensemble one is also pretty good though, so i'll probably go back to that one too. soul clap released their own commercial mix, social experiment 02, or something like that, but i haven't heard it yet. with my recent obsession, i expect i'll get it at some point this week.

as for free stuff, i'm not one of those people who spends much time seeking far & wide. since i listen to a lot of this stuff while researching, editing, and writing, i tend to find a mix i like and then go through whatever else the host site has. this list is at once over-representative of a few sites & scenes and under-representative of everything else happening this year. i'm also suffering a summer induced memory lapse, so the first half of 2011 barely exists for me.

everything from 2011 on wolf+lamb's podcast page (it's only a few)
nguzunguzu's perfect lullaby for dis magazine (linked a page or two back)
baby prince's louche podcast (#50) (linked above)
kate simko's louche podcast (#47 (http://www.louchemusic.com/podcast/Kate-Simko/))
no regular play's louche podcast (#52 (http://www.louchemusic.com/podcast/No-Regular-Play/))
fred p aka black jazz consortium's xlr8r podcast (http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2011/06/fred-p-k-black-jazz-consortium)
matthew kyle live set from 07/31 (http://soundcloud.com/matthew_kyle/live-rhythm-brunch-july-31st) (mark e fans will feel it)
soul clap's essential mix (http://soundcloud.com/soulclap/soul-clap-essential-mix)
optimo's bass and bleepcast 1981-2011 (http://soundcloud.com/twitch/optimo-podcast-9-bass-and) mix

that's a lot so far. i've completely fallen behind on the RA and fact mixes of this year. any good ones? i remember optimo's from back in january being really cool.

i haven't heard anything by suzanne kraft, but i'm in love with this track. if you immediately check out anything in that list, 9000, i think you should go for the matthew kyle mix. it demands sangria, sunglasses, gold lame tube tops, a not too crowded but appropriately humid dancefloor, the smell of grilled food, etc.

It was engineered by Nicolas Vernhes, who's worked on tracks with Cat Power and Malkmus + Jicks.

that rub 'n tug track sounds familiar...i think we must've heard it out because i definitely don't own it. i would not have known or guessed that guys from chavez played on it if i hadn't looked it up on discogs.

i wasn't sure how i felt about the 100% silk aesthetic, but fuck it, this octo octa tape (http://www.discogs.com/Octo-Octa-Rough-Rugged-And-Raw/release/3336793) i picked up today bangs.

i've been listening to a lot of john talabot and robag wruhme lately.

vesper
02-06-2012, 11:34 PM
oh, and the blondes 2xCD comes out tomorrow! i don't know why no one in nyc seems to carry the john talabot record.

Fiona
02-15-2012, 09:06 AM
I'm a wee bit pissed off about the Blondes release as the final part of the duality series is only available on the cd (the others were on 12"s, which I have).
Went to see them in the Bernard Shaw on Sunday night and it was a lot of fun.

Re the John Talabot record, it's available on CD but I think it's OOP on vinyl. At least that's what a friend (who runs a record shop) told me at the Blondes show.

vesper
02-15-2012, 10:25 AM
the blondes release was sold out at other music when i tried to pick it up a couple days ago, so i need to go back sometime this week to see if they've restocked it. i might be annoyed abt this release if i'd bought the 12"s as they came out, but then again, dude, the second disc of remixers looks well worth the cost! it's only $11.99 for 2 CDs over here (maybe it's more expensive on your side of the water).

if it's true that john talabot's fIN is sold out on vinyl, then i'm glad i managed to get one of the last copies when i couldn't find the blondes 2xCD! the sound design on that record is so good. it is definitely the first great full length of 2012 (though i could stand to lose that song w/ the guy from delorean).

god, agoria's RA mix managed to attract me, repulse me, and then attract me again w/in 4 minutes: dj sprinkles -> the streets -> moodyman (w/ some benga and skream mixed under all of them) is, uuuuh, some kind of transition alright.

vesper

so as not to clog up the shared mataboard list, i'm going to try to maintain a rolling spotify playlist of house and techno that i feel in 2012. there are only four tracks on it, one of which was released in late 2011 (whatever), but here it is: http://open.spotify.com/user/bestsparkler/playlist/6DGCeWJPFBHUjpNIbSeWV5

one day i will get around to compiling my favorite 30 or so tracks from 2011.

here are things that lately i have feelings abt:

blondes 2xCD
no regular play - "lookin'"
storm queen - "look right through (art department remix)"
the minimal wave tapes: volume 2
octo octa, rough, rugged, raw tape
homework - "whipped cream"
dixon's live at robert johnson vol. 8 mix
nicholas's RA podcast
michael mayer's total 12 megaset (http://soundcloud.com/kompakt/sets/michael-mayer-total-12-megaset)
baby prince & lonely c - "i remember those days (tanner ross remix)"

tinobeat
03-07-2012, 08:41 AM
I need to grip that minimal wave comp, the first one is great. I think it's kinda funny that Stone's Throw is doing comps of another still-active label that does comps like this themselves, but I'm for it. The three "tapes" comps (lost, found, hidden) on MW are really awesome as well.

yeah, that set took me a couple days to work through, but it's awesome. parts 3->5 hold the bangers. the others are also cool, but, as you might guess, not exactly peak time.

this is actually the first minimal wave comp i've heard. i'm looking forward to checking out the others.

bnjmn's most recent xlr8r podcast ends w/ round two's "new day (ft. andy caine)," which i've kept on repeat for the last 24 hours. if i understand this correctly, round two is the basic channel guys trying their hands at house music. i love that it really sounds like deep house made through dub techno sensibilities (i.e., those chords). here it is:

uV59AUTfpl8

i've also been playing the hell out of prosumer and murat tepeli's serenity from 2008. earl grey turned me on to this around the time it first came out, but i think i did not fully absorb its awesomeness until recently. i mean, lyrically it's corny as hell...but kind of in a good way.

man, i usually don't believe it when people report on these kinds of things, but i'm pretty sure i got death-to-false-house-music-ed in a speciality electronic record store yesterday. who knew that it would be so controversial to ask an owner if he stocks the nina kraviz record on vinyl???
