earl grey,

i found a copy of the erol alkan "one louder" mix on ebay. at first it was a little "too clubbish" for my taste, but has grown on me. par-tay.

i've got my eyes on the taka taka mix next.

thanks for the recommendations.

nice - glad you dig it. it took a little while for me too, but "girls on film" always gets me. "crazy girls make my heart go boom boom" (#5) is an awesome track as well. be warned, 'taka taka' gets pretty pricey on ebay ... i've tried a couple times but still have just my SLSK burn for now.

thanks for the 'smallville' recommendation as well. great stuff ... been listening to it a bunch. that and this triple R mix 'friends' have been my microhouse fix these days....

have you heard the DFA dance to the underground mix? it is released by the same folks who did "one louder". a lot of the songs have showed up elsewhere already, but it is a nice showcase of DFA affiliated acts.

earl grey
03-24-2004, 12:45 PM
yeah i have - that's the one that starts with the DFA mix of metro area's "orange alert" right? that's a great mix ... black dice into the morgan geist mix of "jealous lovers" is way cool. i didn't realize it was also a muzik mix.

the DFA really needs to release more material. i found this mix by them on SLSK called 'atjazz' or 'labresults' (can't tell) but it's pretty good. of course, i'd rather have murphy focus his efforts on a much-needed LCD full-length....

9000
03-24-2004, 02:31 PM
yep, that's it and it's a muzik mix.

i have to imagine the LCD release is going to be bananas. i really don't think i've heard anything by the DFA that i haven't liked - a lot - especially the LCD soundsystem stuff.

have you downloaded the j.o.y. sun plus dfa single? catchy post-punk freakout-ish kind of sound, whatever that may mean. fluxblog had it up a while back and its floating around elsewhere now.

earl grey
03-24-2004, 03:35 PM
yeah i've burned the 3 LCD 12 inches onto a CD and listen to it quite a bit. next best thing until we get an album. the b-sides, i think, are almost as good as the a-sides. incidentally, erol alkan started his set with "yeah" last time he came through NYC - the crowd went mental.

no i haven't heard that new DFA single yet - i should look for it. it had already been pulled down from fluxblog when i saw it. i just downloaded some cover of "losing my edge" on fluxblog that looks interesting - haven't listened yet.

City Rockers is a UK label that does all sorts of crazy shit. I couldn't get their site to open, but more info (slightly) here:

yep, that's it. i guess i got volume 1 (the pink one).

by the way, i highly recommend the boggs record ("stitches") that city rockers released. it is NOT dance related, but is damn good stuff. one of last year's most slept on albums, in my opinion.

knowing a little about your taste, you'd like it. similar to trevor jackson style mixes - hodgepodge of styles - dance, punk, techno...good stuff.

cool, i'll definitely check it out. looking the cover, i think i've seen it in stores before. i'm also curious about this new erlend oye DJ kicks - eclectic mix, plus he apparently sings over the songs. i am a little skeptical but the reviews seem good.

Some, but not a lot (I can't recall the exact ratio at the moment). As soon as I make up my mind about it, I'm gonna have a review up at 75 or Less (http://www.75orless.com).

have you heard the soul jazz konk release?

04-06-2004, 05:01 PM
i wasn't a huge fan of the superpitcher album at first, but it is growing on me quite a bit. the songs with vocals stand out the most, i think. the beats feel a little too straight-up to me at times, but the production is stellar and the songs are starting to all get stuck in my head.

i'm also really enjoying this mix by DJ language called 'new wave vs. negroclash' ... like hip-hop/funk over chill disco beats. only read about negroclash before, but i suppose that's what it is. reminds me of metro area a lot. (who incidentally have a non-LP track on the mix, right before "i zimbra" drops....)

I've been meaning to ask those "in the know"...

Is there any jungle/drum n' bass stuff that came out lately that you guys would recommend?

Haven't visited this arena in a couple years so I don't know who's who anymore...

earl grey
04-06-2004, 09:58 PM
i used to be ALL about the drum n bass but have lost touch lately. i think the big names a couple years ago are still the big names now ... andy C, krust, and ed rush + optical being my favorites. but hospital records has put out a bunch of cool stuff recently. their style is more soulful and keyboard-heavy ... the 'plastic surgery' compilations (vols. 2-3 especially) are a great intro. i've also heard about some interesting stuff coming out of brazil, though i haven't heard much of it.

on the jungle front, this isn't especially new but the compilation 'toasted: massive ragga jungle' is as good as it gets in my book.

yeah, i haven't picked up a d&b album in quite some time. i can only recommend going back and getting some of the stuff that was released 7 or 8 years ago during the height of the movement.

if you're really into the banging shit, go with "torque", which is a 2-disc set with lots of ed rush colloborations. if you want more mellow and soulful vibe, i'd highly recommend a guy called gerald's "black secret technology". i'm almost hesitant to call this a d&b album, as it really defies categorization. definitely one of my favorire"electronic" albums ever and something that i still listen to and enjoy, unlike a lot of the stuff from the same era.

just picked up deadbeat "something borrowed, something blue". on the surface, i'm inclined to say he was going for a "pole 4" sound. definitely lots of influence. i need to listen to it a few more times.

these days my taste in electronic is all about darkside and trance 'n bass.

for some darkside dnb, evil, heavy, very well produced stuff download some Concord Dawn. Mainly the tracks "morning light" "slinky" "take me away"

or John B for the dnb meets trance shit. Although I should point out its more jungle (sans mc-ing) than trance. So don't be scared away. Download "John B Live at Kiss FM" for a taste of what I'm talking about

i do have "Visions" which i love, but I haven't heard anything else by him I liked--- certainly not the following album. I heard he produced some good stuff though.. Is it called exile or something?
I'll try and find it...

Thanks for the recommendations---i'll be on the lookout for the "plastic surgery" comps and "black secret technology" this weekend...

i don't believe black secret technology was ever released in the US, so it may be a little tough to find at this point. it's easier to pick up his essence lp release on k7, but black secret is the one you really need to get. i've seen it on ebay, so keep an eye out.

i kinda like the luomo album i know ('vocal city'), but yeah, the tune of his on the 'clicks and cuts' comp i have is totally different and awesome. know nothing beyond that.

luomo was a little too close to straight-up house for me initially, but it's grown on me a bunch. everything i read about vladislav delay, though, says the clicks/cuts stuff is ace.

did you get to hear the erland oye mix yet? i'd say it is good, not great. it's pretty even keeled throughout, although it picks up a little momentum after the fifth or sixth song. it's more background loungy music than a dancefloor burner, if that's your thing.

I recently heard the Erland Oye mix and thought it was pretty good. I'm not any sort of authority on electronic music but this one was pleasant on the ears. He remixes stuff by The Rapture, The Smiths, and Phoenix (if memory serves, the Phoenix cut blazes).

9000
04-24-2004, 02:15 PM
the phoenix track reminds me of jamiroquai. i can see how people would like it, but i don't.

on the mix, he doesn't tamper too much with the rapture song, save for a little karoke style intro. is there another remix?

He does "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths but I think that the name is different.

funny, i thought the exact same thing when i heard the phoenix track. i like it though.

as for the whole thing, i only listened to it once but it was alright. i expected to dislike his vocals, but i actually think they work well in spots. (especially that smiths cover, on top of a kickin' royksopp remix.) all in all it's kinda nonoffensive - not bad, but i wish it had more of an edge.

i just got around to listening to this for the first time and it's quite good. great to work to. it's definitely got a jungle vibe, but much more ambient than most stuff. it reminds me of this series of comps called 'artcore' that react records put out around then.

i also stumbled onto a page of ragga jungle mixes - http://www.mashit.com/tour/ (MP3's are at the bottom). DJ C's junglist bashment mix is pretty awesome.

I just picked up that Erland Oye and while I liked his voice, it irked me that he would sing a verse of the rapture and phoenix right before the lyrics kicked in. I liked the smith remix he did and I think he throws in some pet shop boys after that too.

anybody grab that Michael Mayer 'Fabric 13' that came out a while ago? It falls along similar lines and is pretty good too.

i like APT, but you'll find a lot of people who hate it. it's a bar, not a club, so no space to dance really. and the drinks are super expensive. the big cans of sapporo are the best deal by far. (they often do an open bar from 9-10 which is always worth it.) they always get fantastic DJ's though - more than a few times, i've gotten into someone and found out that they spun there a few months prior. (i.e. james murphy had a residency there for a while, michael mayer and akufen both spun last year, etc.)

i used to live right over there and figured that the scene would be pretty obnoxious, as is most of the meat packing district now. i've heard the space is nice though, and i've been impressed with the names they attract; i've just never gotten over there to judge for myself.

yeah i preferred the old meatpacking district too, but sapporo tall boys tend to make everything better. they always seem bottomless (in the best of ways).

i haven't heard about too many murphy DJ gigs - just a rapture afterparty at bar 13 in march, though it was a wed night and i think he went on real late. i would love to catch him live, though, obviously....

yeah i need to check out 'tour de traum' - been on my list. i think i heard about that smagghe too - 'suck my deck' or something like that. don't know him but an other music review caught my eye. i've been slacking on new stuff lately, i need to pick it up a bit. akufen is dropping a mix soon too, in the fabric series, which i am very curious to hear.

been listening to some older faves lately:

DJ language - new wave vs. negroclash
villalobos - alcachofa
daft punk - discovery
digital disco (vols 1 and 2)

took me a while to get into 'discovery', especially since 'homework' is so much more banging, but i soak it up now.

earl g-unit,

i picked up kompakt 100. can't say i'm too crazy about it, which is surprising given the strength of most kompakt releases. the discs seem a bit flat.

the smagghe suck my deck mix is pretty good. did you get a chance to hear it yet?

yeah i do love many of the songs on 'kompakt 100', but i think it'd be a killer single disc and even better if it was mixed. something about the sequencing feels a little off in spots. i still often get the urge to blast the justus kohncke version of "hot love" though.

i haven't gotten to 'suck my deck' yet ... lately i've been obsessed with daniel bell's mix 'the button-down mind strikes back!' ... sorta like a blippier take on michael mayer's fabric mix. damn, damn good. also enjoying jimmy edgar's EP 'access rhythm' though it's way too short ... a full-length is needed.

oh and somehow i managed to not hear a single orbital album until just last week. but 'orbital 2' is the shit.

so what're the biggies and others from 2005? i feel like i must have a lot of catching up to do and/or some really obvious ones i'm missing.

optimo, psyche out
jena paradies, kunsterformen der natur
jena paradies, september
superpitcher, today
rnvg mx4 crazy rhythms

i've also listened to the first of those two italo derrugiero mixes, rvng mx3, and optimo's how to kill the dj pt 2 quite a bit this year, but they don't exactly count, do they. surprisingly, there are a lot of good mixes in this (http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=5357885) ILM thread.

mixes?

you hit some good ones for the year. haven't heard the jena paradies ones. what are they like?

other stuff:

erol alkan - bugged out mix: bananas. disc one is dancefloor banger after banger. disc two is okay for when you want to kill yourself.

diplo - live from montreal: sweet mish-mash of soul, grime, hip-hop.

optimo mp3 mixes - just wow.

beatsinspace radio show mp3s- some real gems between sweeney and guests.

vesper
10-06-2005, 08:55 PM
i'll have to search around for the diplo and erol alkan mixes. and i never seem to get those optimo mixes while they're available. (if any of faster people want to *ahem* send me an email or a private message, i'd love you.)

the two JP mixes i mentioned are pretty standard electro, microhouse mixes -- more pop than banger though. he has another called new identities, but the hard, tech stuff isn't my bag (one of the reasons i can't get into basement jaxx "technologic (kontrol mix)"). all three are available on his website (http://www.jenaparadies.com)'s audio section.

earl grey needs to get in here and tell me the name of that akufen mix (i think under his gov't name).

earl grey
10-07-2005, 02:09 AM
the akufen record i think yr thinking of is 'musique pour 3 femmes enceintes,' under his own name marc leclair. not a mix but nine originals. it's really good, way more ambient/sedate than his tracks as akufen but with the same aesthetic. closer to burger/ink and gas, i think. thumbs up.

'psyche out,' 'MX4,' and 'today' are prob my favorites of the year. i like the paradies mix 'kunstformen der natur' a whole lot, never got to hear the others though. and that erol alkan mix never clicked with me like his last one. i feel like there's more i want to hear from this year, everything i've gotten really into has been older. i guess luomo's first record was reissued this year, that definitely matches up with anything that's come out new.

vesper - never heard the optimo mixes? oh, you're missing out. really good shit. i'll get em to you.

If anyone's looking for something a bit different, there's an excellent dubstep mix on Blackdown's site, download here. (http://www.lilo.net/~martin/dusk_blackdown_keysound_radio.mp3)
Or if you still like Drum and Bass, Dublin based label Bassbin have a mix hosted by BBC at present, click here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/collective/downloads/bassbinselection.mp3)

Finally, moving away from mixes, seeing as pretty much all the good ones have been covered, I'd highly recommend Corporate Crimewave by Hystereo on the Soma label. Absolutely banging synth-techno which should go down well with any fans of Daft Punk.

scott from other music has a mix coming out on RVNG soon - 'RVNG PRSNTS MX5,' i'm guessing. he's got great taste that covers a huge variety of stuff, so i'm really curious to see what's on it.

Picked up Carl Craig's Fabric 25 mix yesterday, threw it earlier. Based on first listen, think it's pretty good - starts out quite funky/disco-like before hitting full-on dancefloor. If you'd heard that set in a club, you'd probably never have stopped for the night. Only gripe is the unnecessary interjections - can it, Carl!

the ourdisco site (http://www.ourdisco.com/music/) has both a live set and DJ set up from lindstrom + prins thomas, both recorded on november 11. really good stuff.

(way better than when i saw them here in july, i think, but i ended up seeing their 'warm-up' show and not the megaset they did @ PS 1.)

You can try...
Slamming set tonight, didn't stop, beginning to end. VERY micro/house heavy, with a couple of disco/dfa/pop interludes. Thought Twitch threw in slightly more lazy/easy/beat-laden - though bonus points for slipping in Prince. Wilkes was a bit more slick, made my night by lashing on "I Feel Space".

the tracklistings are all on the beats in space site, actually. (except for the carl craig mix, that is, which sucks b/c i think it's my new favorite.) here's what superpitcher played:

1. Superpitcher - Tell Me About It - Kompakt
2. DJ Koze - Hicc Up - Kompakt
3. Isolee - My Hi-Matic - Playhouse
4. Wighnomy Brothers - Frelekksemplar - Freude-am-Tanzen
5. Odyssey - Odyssey - My Best Friend
6. Baxendale - I Built This City (Michael Mayer Mix) - Kompakt
7. Justus Kohncke - Krieg - Kompakt
8. Trulz & Robin - Turn My Head - Planet Noise
9. Pom Pom - Pom Pom 21 - Pom Pom
10. Tocotronic - Pure Vernunft Darf Niemals Siegan (Superpitcher & Wasserman Maxi Mix) - Kompakt
11. Heiko Voss - Running Free - Firm

he totally writes the book on how to drop the mayer baxendale mix in a set. such a fantastic transition, coming out of that odyssey tune.

nothing big, as far as i know. 'immer 2' is slated for jan 16, i believe, but the lack of any details on it beyond the title makes me wonder how firm that is.

there are still a few '05 mixes i'm still keen on hearing, though - most notably M.A.N.D.Y.'s 'body language' (all i know is the title track with booka shade and it's the shit), triple R's 'flashback: MBF,' and john tejada's 'back to basics.'

I ordered this a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully should materialise by the end of the month, I'll fill you in when it does. Kompakt were out of it so I had to go through another German distributor (via a friend) which is great for oop stuff but kinda slow and pricey.

3. rinocerose - "bitch (jd twitch's optimo mix)"
4. silver city - "shiver (ewan pearson bari girl mix)"

best part - monday is president's day.

MF parties - music is usually indie dance type stuff, more rock than electronic, and they set a theme/dress code for each one. typically something annoying which, with the doorman situation, is partly why i've avoided them. but i've also heard they tend to not be too over-the-top in making sure people fit "the look." they're generally at the roxy or avalon or some place big.

yeah. the dress code for their last party: "elegant, ultra chic, big hair ... circa 1968 barbarella/valley of the dolls realness! anything turn of the century and/or victorian!"

it's ridiculous, but i have a hard time believing everyone plays along. though i've had to deal w/ their doorman a couple times at the tribeca grand. someone needs to kick that guy in the junk.

i really like how the optimo glasgow parties have no dresscode, no VIP lists, no velvet rope. (or something close.) kinda a mismatch with MF, it seems, but whatever, i'm not complaining...

Have listened to this a few times now. I think it's fascinating how he manages to keep each track sounding so coherent despite the multitude of themes he progresses through. I suppose it's the consistent loopy beat over which everything else floats that keeps each track together. Not so minimal as I expected either.

Think I'll hop across town for it, it's got to be worth 10 notes. Going to another gig earlier that night so it'll boil down to whether I can drag myself in the opposite direction to home or not, I reckon.

Headed to Electric Shock last night, Ellen Allien and Alexander Robotnick were spinning. His set was pretty good, italo house etc. Lots of bouncing around. Her set was fantastic, really heavy and dark without being bang-bang-bang-punch-the-air knacker techno.

yeah, i'm sure justus is worth checking out. as was that party last night it seems ... your options across the pond never fail to impress. i'd never expect those two together, nor did i realize robotnick was even spinning much any more. eager to hear the new ellen allien album though, people seem to be digging it...

not that this is much of a surprise, but optimo totally killed it last night. 9000 - did you make it to the end? that "how soon is now?" remix was wild! "kiss me again" was of course fantastic, and i was really pumped to hear "by the time i get to venus" (juan maclean) ... hadn't heard that song in ages. the stooges into sons and daughters was pretty hot too. great great set, can't wait for sunday...

See this really gets my goat - 4.20?! Mid-week we're lucky to get past 2.30, and at weekends chucking out time's 3.00.

No, I didn't go to Justus Koehncke the other week. It was about 10 below and just way too cold to go walking across town. Such a lame excuse in retrospect.

i don't think you made it in the end - it was actually possible to pick out all the folks there for optimo. weird party, never really got off the ground. they thought they sucked, but i think the crowd was more at fault. it was lots of electronic stuff from optimo, the crowd seemed more interested in hits (if that). in any event, not the right DJ set for the room. still an entertaining night though.

Yes, really. And places here don't get busy 'til at least 12.30 either. I don't bother in London, too messy getting home, but Manchester's pretty much the same as Dublin in terms of shutting up shop.

is tiga spinning or performing?
He was spinning (though being him there was an element of performance!). Set was good, built around album tracks. Dropped Louder Than a Bomb early, first part of set quite similar. Played a killer remix of Bloc Party's Banquet, which I hadn't heard before - maybe the Cornelius remix? That was the start of a long electro phase, got kind of disco-y then, You're Gonna Want Me got in there, then very tech-electro thud thud by the 90 minute mark. The place was heaving though, hard to get the room to dance. Everyone for themselves!

as much as i would have liked to have seen optimo 2X in one weekend, i just didn't have it in me to deal with the MF thing. based on your comments, sounds like i picked the right night anyway.

i thought they played a heavy electronic set, with the occasional offbeat tracks, as a way to appease that crowd on friday. don't get me wrong: it was banging, but i would have liked to hear them mix it up a bit more.

i can reckon how you determined the optimo crowd... :-B

the MF scene was actually less of a hassle than i expected. those parties are all hype though - really unimpressed with the vibe, considering how much attention they get.

the first half of friday's set was definitely electronic, but i think it got a lot more varied after you left. the last hour or so was all over the place.

If you can tear youselves away from Optimo-related matters for a second... my copy of M.A.N.D.Y.'s Body Language mix came in this weekend. Getting much more into it now, but the closing half definitely trumps the opening.

funny, i just started on 'body language' this past weekend myself. yeah, some of the mixing is a little heavy-handed - i.e. optimo did a far slicker job with "i feel space" not once but twice this wknd, tho that's me getting us back on optimo again - but overall i quite liked it. (and i'm thinking it's gonna continue to grow on me.)

how does one pronounce M.A.N.D.Y. anyway? is it "mandy" or "M-A-N-D-Y"? i ask because i just recently discovered i'd been pronouncing DJ koze incorrectly all this time. apparently it's something like "kot-zhay." damn germans.

anagrama

to me, drum and bass in the last 3 years is better than it has been in any period.

when I hear old school jungle stuff from 1994 it just sounds incredibly redundant and dull.

a lot of new stuff is a lot more musically accomplished, melodic, and well-crafted, while still incredibly catchy.

earl grey
03-11-2006, 02:00 AM
the only new drum 'n bass from the last 3 years that's grabbed my attention has come out on hospital ... i admittedly haven't been looking very hard, but whatever i do hear tends to seem really flat, very dn'b by the numbers. and i was *all* about dn'b for quite a while, it's really what got me into electronic music. but too much of what i hear sounds just the same as when i got into it. somewhat ironic seeing as i got into dn'b b/c i thought all house sounded the same, and now i think the exact reverse.

(i'll still stand up for those old dn'b records though, there were some real classics.)

anagrama
03-11-2006, 05:13 PM
As for as Hospital Records stuff, ie. the stuff that is quite eclectic, very musically varied, lots of different electronica influences, but still with a nice drum and bass sound.

look out for High Contrast - High Society.
trust me, its a fantastic album. here's a track from the album...

'high society' is v good but i actually much prefer 'true colors,' the one he did before it. the london electricity stuff i've heard on hospital is also great, less soulful than high contrast but jazzier.

anagrama
03-12-2006, 02:05 AM
do you like any of the darker/melodic dnb stuff?
or just the lighter liquid stuff like high contrast/london elektricity?

ever heard of Klute? he put out a double CD in 2005 called "No One's Listening Anymore" and its a mix of softer, more melodic electronica stuff, and also a disc of drum and bass.

check this track out, you might like it.

earl grey
03-12-2006, 01:50 PM
klute's alright, never blew me away though. the one i think i have is 'lie cheat & steal.' i was already moving away from dn'b when i got it though. the dark stuff was my favorite back when i was really into it. andy C was my fave DJ - tho nothing he's released has done him justice - and i really loved ed rush and optical too. i also loved the classic jungle ... DJ hype, the ganja kru, etc.

the dn'b i listen to most now, actually, is ragga jungle. soundmurderer will always have a permanent spot on my ipod.

anagrama
03-13-2006, 03:00 AM
I've never really been into ragga. I always gravitated to the more technical, melodic, dark, dirty kind of dnb sound, rather that the happy, party, ragga, junglist stuff.

but dude, trust me, download that Klute track, let me know what you think. It's not really dark, its just soulful and goddamn great.

(i'm already thinking of a certain arthur russell song that i may try to work it into if i can get my program up and running in time for the mixtrade mail out.) ultimately, the sounds probably have more to do with nathan fake's awesomeness than fairmont's though.

I just love how they manage to dig out all that interesting stuff. The amount of time they must spend rifling through second-hand shops and then actually listening through it all. I suppose there are worse ways to spend your days.

Went to Todd Terje at Discotonic last night, set was super - disco, funk, cosmic with a bit of house thrown in near the end. The place went mental when he dropped Eurodans. Some poor fella managed to dislocate his knee on the dancefloor, and the paramedics had to carry him up the stairs on a chair. Mortification....

Going to see Hive and Dylan this Thursday. It is not minimalist house or latin fusion jazz funk electro or any degree therein. It is hard, dark, warped and quite violent drum and bass. so, five months later, the relevee ep is finally out, and i think the carl craig version is still my top song of the year. i've heard bits of the other remixes--need to pick up the ep to fully digest. i'm sure at least one of you has heard them all by now.

i still haven't heard any of it, actually! this is what happens w/o the YSI thread on ILM, i guess. i gotta get on that.

interesting (and very brief) comment in sherburne's villalobos review on pitchfork today about how the general obsession with kompakt may be a thing of the past. he might be right ... i haven't been keeping up with their singles but they don't seem to own my listening as much as they once did.

the 'salvador' EP that was the subject of the review is tremendous. the villalobos mix of senor coconut's "electrolatino" is one of my favorite things he's done.

solid but nothing too special, methinks. i should listen to 'victimizer' more but it's yet to grab me as a whole. the kaito album was nice, but just nice. i need to hear 'pop ambient 2006' still as well, and yeah it's just june. i'm not blowing the whistle yet, just holding my finger to the wind...

(incidentally, i think PFM's electronic coverage is generally quite good. they've done a good job getting writers that know their shit.)

kompakt hasn't dropped a thumper in a while, but that will change at some point.

kaito has grown on me a bunch. i'm surprised i like the lp as much as i do.

in regard to pf: i can barely make it through their reviews--usually just look to see what's out and the scores, and attempt to glean a few points of interest. my general feeling is that they really don't cover all that much in the electronic space.

The 2x12" appeared in shops here last week, but I'm being cheap and trying to track down the cd (half the price) which has so far proved a fruitless exercise. Double vinyl it is by the look of it.
All the comments I've heard so far have been all over the DFA remix in preference to the Carl Craig rework, so it must be outstanding.

Re the Kaito album, I just got it straight away; loved it from the off and still do. The Mikkel Metal album is one I always enjoy when I throw it on - when I remember to. Between those two, and releases from Klimek and The Orb, Kompakt's full length output this year has been relatively one-track. They appear to be reserving the quality goods for vinyl slabs as far as I can tell. The last I picked up were Axel Bartsch's "Light In The Dark" 12" and the Kosi Comes Around remixes - all good.

i basically agree, but they seem to be doing more w/ electronic stuff lately (just the past few weeks). good regular columns as well.

my favorite kaito moment is the spectacular erlend oye mash-up with "release your body" at the start of tobias thomas's 'smallville' - one of my fave moments on any mix, period.

couldn't kompakt's one-track path this year be explained by all this attention they're giving to K2, or whatever that branched off electrohouse label is that they started? i haven't heard anything from (or any good press) about that label at all, though.

-edit-

i still need to hear those kaito and mikkel metal albums. granted, i'm not curious enough to run for the stores now, but i guess i'll pick them up one day.

Ditto. Front 242 - excellent!

I caved and went for the Relevee 2x12". I completely get the fuss over the DFA remix, it's a stretched out twinkling disco classic. As a standalone track, the Carl Craig sounds grand, but just a bit monotonous imo.

the dfa remix is entirely disco boot worthy, fi. that and the alternate version leading into the carl craig remix are something special, for sure. the CC version is still my favorite though. shit, even the bady ford remix is solid, although it's gets lost in the hubbub surrounding those other takes. those synths on the CC version though...whewwwwwweeee.

Get Lost: Damian Lazarus & Matthew Styles

Came across this one at the weekend. A few tracks grabbed me, but I want to hear a first hand account before making my mind up - not come across any discussion/comment so far.

I've Four Tet - DJ Kicks on order, really like the look of it. He mixes Syclops into Curtis Mayfield, Akufen into Animal Collective and Quickspace (my favourite track - Superplus) into Cabaret Voltaire. I have to hear those transitions!
Other prospective highlights are Stereolab, Model 500 and Autechre. I'm pretty damn excited about hearing this. Will report back when it arrives!

There's a double header of Andrew Weatherall and Alexander Robotnick here on Thurs night which I'm hoping to get to. Hate it when a line-up like that pops up on a school night.

i've heard the transitions on that four tet mix are actually nothing special - apparently it's not much more than him pushing play. this is like third- or fourth-hand info now though...

yeah OM or kim's in the city. kim's will sometimes have new stuff well-priced, and their used section can be great, but OM is still my go-to. i still get a lot of stuff online though (half.com can be great), and sometimes i can get stuff from labels. (but P2P is of course in the mix too. almost a must w/ all these imports.)

Well I sincerely hope your sources are off! I ordered solely on the basis of the tracklisting, then read somewhere that the transition from "Mom, The Video Broke" into "If I Were Only A Child Again" was pretty special. Anyway, if nothing else it's a good compilation.

I almost forgot, Moodymann has released a mix. I'm interested but it's horribly expensive. Any feedback on it to aid the decision-making process appreciated.

03. Gui Boratto - Arquipelago

Oooh, Arquipélago is an incredible track. I've only heard it a couple of times, but it's a hypnotic monster. It's on DJ T's Body Language, Vol 2 comp.

The only other one I know is Axel Bartsch - Redlight, pretty good.
The Thomas/Mayer track is hardly a cover of The Beloved?! I wonder, after Mayer and Matias Aguayo did the Kylie cover...

I got Four Tet's DJ Kicks mix today; earl grey, pleased to say it's a little more than him pressing play.

On first listen, there are a couple of iffy transitions: from Curtis Mayfield to Heiner Stadler, and Cabaret Voltaire to Gong, but the rest more than makes up for them.
The first three tracks - David Behrman "Leapday Night (Scene 1)"/Syclops "Mom, The Video Broke"/Curtis Mayfield "If I Were Only A Child Again" - in particular 2 + 3, are virtually seamless and had me thinking "wooaaaaah, genius!". Most articulate, but that was my reaction. Plus wishing I could do that.

The grime/dubstep thing doesn't do it for me at all. For all the press music of that ilk gets round these parts, I'm not convinced it has the following to back it. Least in Ireland anyway.

Next up on my list, Tiefschwarz do Fabric 29.

Plus Recloose and Optimo next Thursday. Wooo!

Holy shit! Twitch managed to combine the best parts of the Our Disco set from '04 that's available for download, and last year's BIS set. Awesome. I jumped up and down for Ireland for 2 hours straight.
But had to call the cops because someone's having a snooze on the pavement outside my house.
Calling the police at 4am isn't fun when you've guzzled a bottle of wine, a sixer of corona, and have danced like a loo-laa since midnight and are very self conscious of same.
And I have to get up for work in less than 2 and a half hours... Here's to Friday productivity, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

EDIT: clearly the internet is not idiot-proof :o

it took me halfway through the song to really embrace it, but this (http://www.dominorecordco.com/site/player.php?fileID=811&action=listen&list=artist) remix of junior boys would probably appeal to you three instantly. i love it all up and down at this point.

-edit-

i just noticed that this mix is on the b-side to the "in the morning" single (also ft. mouse on mars' andi toma, another nice connection), so has anyone heard the alex smoke mix on the a-side? pretty amazing that junior boys has managed to get such great remixers (i include fennesz here, but not so much caribou).

i'm listening to so this is goodbye right now and it is out and out great! i don't like it quite as much as last exit as a whole product, but at least this one doesn't have duds like "under the sun" and "three words."

I do like the Morgan Geist remix, but got to say I prefer the Alex Smoke mix - which I see you mention in yr edit. Haven't picked it up but caught it a few times on the radio. It's in keeping with his style - minimal and pared down, recommended.

Another worth checking out is Justus Köhncke's remix of Lo-Fi-Fnk's "Wake Up"; great tune to start off with but the added disco elements make the track.
