Apologies if this is well-trod ground around here, but I saw Broken Social Scene tonight at the Middle East in Cambridge and believe they may have been one of the top three or four live acts I've ever seen in my life. Anyone have any thoughts on their show?

I saw them in DC on Thursday night and was wowed by their performance. The Dears did nothing for me, Stars were good but I was ready for them to go, but Broken Social Scene exceeded my expectations. I didn't think they would really rawk.

Vesper, did the girl from Stars come out and sing on a handful of the BSS tunes ("Anthems," "Almost Crimes," etc) for your show as well? I thought her voice was just SO outstanding..

Yeah. At the moment, Amy Milan is one of my favorite female vocalists.

last summer, i saw bss at some free outdoor concert thing, and the set had to be one of the most boring i've ever sat through. perhaps i caught them on an off night? i know everyone raves about them, but i just didn't feel it.

was that their show on some pier on the west side? i was pretty underwhelmed by that one too, though they blew the roof off the mercury lounge when i saw them a couple weeks prior.

in general, i find outdoor rock shows to be an uphill battle.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago as well.

I really liked it a lot.

I think the band's performance really depends on who's playing that night out of the whole revolving door member thing.

bss are one of the reasons why i'm so excited to live in montreal right now. the whole fused toronto-montreal scene is absolutely awesome. the whole bss/stars/metric/do make say think thing. also, the collaborations between members of do make say think/bss and sophie from godspeed for valley of the giants...

i've always been proud of the montreal scene but now that it's expanding and testing new waters, i'm just really stoked. it's a great time to live in my city.

i agree that there are some great bands from the montreal scene right now. another one is the Unicorns. i feel like there really isn't alot of local support going on though. maybe im just blind though, i dunno...

I really enjoyed their album. I was surprised when some of the songs took on such a serious tone with titles and packaging like that though. 'tuff luff' is my favourite, best use of recorder in a while.

i agree. stay away from their new seven-inch on suicide squeeze though. its not worth your time.
