There are people whose only mission in life is to stop other people from hearing things they themselves find objectionable.

When I was a college DJ in the 1980s, we had a similar problem with a complainant who threatened to call the FCC unless I, personally, apologized to him, personally, on the air. I did so. He then complained that he sensed something satirical in my apology. I had to apologize to him again, on the air, this time "with sincerity".

There's a certain element of satisfaction in controlling other people, clearly.

Thank God, the Internet should make all of this irrelevant in the next few years. It's almost worth trading analog FM for crappy digital streams.

Add this one to the "We're Sorry, Again." campaign.

Yep, both XM and Sirius show us support, and they're both playing Matador releases at the moment.

I haven't heard satellite radio yet, but Chris has and he was crazy about it.

hehe, i'm lucky i can play whatever i want because no one listens to the college radio station here. i should go for a world record and play 11 frogs songs. but then i don't have any of their albums. i do play lots of yo la tengo though in a row.

P.G. Six: It's wonderful, though quite different from "Porch Tricks". More abstract, and the folk seems more American, less English. Still great.

I never got to see the fake news update. Is it still kicking around?

Hey Dave Martin, how's the new Reigning Sound? Months ago Midheaven said it sounded like the Oblivians with a good bassline. Accurate description?

Dave's out today, but he's over his heels about Reigning Sound.

The description of the Reigning Sound is lacking. Don't get me wrong as I love the Oblivians, but It's obvious that Greg has really let the other sides of his song writting show w/the Reigning Sound and we're all better off for it. The new record IS called Too Much Guitar and it does live up to it's title, but there are still some slower brooding tunes that are fantastic. The out takes (slight overlap with TMG, but at least 60% to 70% unheard songs) are also going to be released at some point by Sympathy. A win win situation.

No more live-local content for WRUR

By Matthew Daneman
Staff writer

(May 26, 2004) — Prompted by the Federal Communications Commission’s nationwide crackdown on broadcasting indiscretions, the University of Rochester’s radio station is no longer carrying live local programming.

Starting this week, all of the local programs on WRUR-FM (88.5) — from hip-hop shows to DJs spinning favorite college rock bands such as Franz Ferdinand — are pre-recorded.

And the tapes are screened prior to airing, said general manager Jared Lapin, 21, a senior from Larchmont, Westchester County.

WRUR has not received any FCC warnings but has had listener complaints “occasionally,” Lapin said. He declined to be more specific.

”The primary focus is the summer, when we don’t have a lot of people here” to monitor and supervise the radio station, said Dean of the College William Scott Green. “It’s basically a response to the heightened sensitivities and the broadcast climates. This is a way to make sure … we’re careful.”

WRUR will decide later this summer whether the policy will continue into the regular school year, Lapin said.

The 3,000-watt station carries National Public Radio and BBC programming on weekday mornings. Those programs will continue to be live. But most of the station’s programming is locally generated, Lapin said.

The FCC in recent months has been particularly aggressive in fining broadcasters for offensive content. The agency this spring imposed a total of $495,000 in fines on six stations owned by Clear Channel Communications, including Rochester’s WNVE-FM (95.1).

The fines were for an April 2003 broadcast by shock jock Howard Stern that the FCC said was indecent. Clear Channel subsequently dropped Stern.

FCC Chairman Michael Powell has called for increasing the fines broadcasters pay for airing indecent material.
