The Chills
The Clean
The Bats
The Great Unwashed

to start... more late '80s than early '90s

Then assuming you want some non-New Zealand music:

Breaking Circus
Big Black
Eric B & Rakim
Public Enemy
that other weird Bomb Squad-produced MC
De La Soul
NWA
Frogs - It's Only Right & Natural

Track done the '88 compilation "Human Music" on Homestead.

You'll need nothing else. Half Jap, Antietam, The Clean, Big Dipper, Live Skull.

Why did you let 4 Non Blondes slide? Is Linda Perry working on the next Cat Power LP or something?

more new zealand:

the verlaines first slash record, "ready to fly," was pretty great, tho' better live... i assume you have early-mid '80s classics "juvenalia," "hallelelujah all the way home," "bird dog."

graeme jefferies "messages from the cake kitchen"; cd reissue has a dogshit cover-- don't be dissuaded but don't steal my hand paint splattered lp either... ASIDE: hey Patrick, i've always wonder why most FN lp covers had pinched corners? wuzzat part of manufacturing or shipping or ??? this record is best known HERE for cat power's cover of "fate of the human carbine," natch. alas, nothing graeme has done since has really reached this downer apex.

tall dwarfs "fork songs," "weeville" AND chris knox "croaker," "seizure." (this is assuming you've internalized the "hello cruel world" comp.)

***

australia:

feedtime: esp. "shovel" & "cooper-s"; latter is as boggling as chan's "covers record" when it comes to goosing the squares.

england/europe:

(maybe) much from the wolfhounds, if you candle hardass & twee in curious admixture. if anyone likes the smiths AND the fall, they might be able to explain it better than i.

de artsen "connie waves with a shell"

maybe some german crap that eludes? maybe. (& i'm no anglophile.)

mekons "so good it hurts," "rock 'n roll," "curse of the mekons": despite most of the insipid critical mewling around them, the mekons at their non-concept bound peak are a great great band.

***

white u.s.

ALL by texas instruments, tho' the only half-great debut lp never made digital.

divine horsemen "devil's river" & "snake handler" on sst

chain gang "mondo manattan" (lost)

mofungo ALL on lost/twin tone & sst. incosistent due to band politics, their peaks were high & unique.

lazy cowgirls "tapping the source" & "how it looks, how it is." can't say i've kept up but back then, for PUNK motherfucking ROCK, these guys were the best, don't be put off by the (great) baldy singer.

there's more but this is a start.

AMG lists their "Roots And Influences" as R.E.M, The Replacements, Alex Chilton, The Byrds, Big Star.

Umm. Yeah.

please patrick, stop with the indie-snobbery. it is time the indie club realizes the greatness of blind mellon and definitely the gin blossoms.

and if some indie-tards see weezer as relevant i don't see why they are not either.

also people should buy their albums because it's a shame that the lead singer from the gin blossoms is now working as a domino's pizza delivery person and when people kind of recognize him when he delivers their pizza they are always like "hey don't i know you from somewhere? oh yeah better than ezra were so good. i still have your first album somewhere."

Dude, it's not snobbery. You're talking to someone who likes Technotronic, the Spice Girls, Billy Gilman and even early Ben Lee. I used to spend hours defending the Pixies when nobody around here would give them the time of day. I just don't like either of the two bands in question.

And by the way, someone needs to add the Loud Family to the list of early '90s bands. One of the most underrated bands, ever. In fact, are they even rated, by anyone? Just overlooked I guess. All their records are great. As are Game Theory's before them.

And you made Matador sell 50% to Beggar's so you could get 4AD on the premises to back you up?

The Pixies are worse than the Gin Blossoms.

Scott Miller, si si.

Black Francis, no.

& what about the Bird Nest Roys? I guess they're really mid-'80s but yes them also, always.

Giant Sand, esp. "Love Songs" & "Long Stem Rant" were pretty tremendous...

The Triffids? Or is that more-MID '80s?

Did you REALLY like the Pixies, Patrick?

<"this monkey's gone to heaven...">

OOF!!

(wasn't that a Happy Flowers record?)

That brings back TERRIBLE memories of people that thought real hard on "Twin Peaks" too...

concerning serious albums to get. the silly pillows "silly image pillowhead" is a good collection of their songs between 1986-93 and is really, really, really good. it's the perfect album to listen to in the spring and summertime as well.

and patrick "it was me i am the one who threw the "aids kills fags dead" shirt on stage, i'm so glad i got that off my chest" amory i like early ben lee, some good songs on the grandpaw would album. some bad one's too though.

There's no accounting for taste... I'm sure if we put our heads together we could find at least one band that each of us liked that the others absolutely loathed.

I saw the Pixies at the Brixton Academy in 1990 play one of the most stupendous rock shows of any band, ever, period. I hadn't been much of a fan up to that point, but I was converted. And bought all the records and indeed, all the singles.

I also really loved Twin Peaks, though that's a lot harder for me to understand now.

The Triffids were a fucking AMAZING band until they moved to the UK... perhaps even one album after that. Their early singles and EPs are extremely awesome as well.

shot at redemption:

ultramagnetic mc's - critical beatdown
bdp - criminal minded
big daddy kane - long live the kane
kool g rap & dj polo - road to the riches
jungle brothers - straight out the jungle

all late 80's, all essential.

I don't know, I'm sorry, I just don't like the Stone Roses much. They never really made it big in the States and somehow that shoegazer stuff never really sat well with me. The band really wasn't that original, pulling from Led Zeppelin and the Yardbirds a bit obviously. Furthermore, U.K. bands like them are a dime a dozen. Blur and Ride both have some similarities, and listen to the Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Teenage Fanclub and later on Oasis. Maybe it isn't the stone roses I don't like, but that particular batch of English groups with the exception of My Bloody Valentine and to some extent Ride. I don't mind Swervedriver's music, but I cant stand the vocals.

Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill

And His Name Is Alive - Home Is In Your Head and Mouth By Mouth......I'm surprised more people didn't dig this band in their day.....

Wow, I've seen people dismiss the boom of Brit-rock in the early 90s before, but calling the ones you mentioned a dime a dozen really doesn't sit well. You cited the most distinct names, and ignored hangers-on like Shed Seven, the Milltown Brothers, Thousand Yard Stare, and Ocean Colour Scene (each of whom actually ARE a dime a dozen).

Blur and Ride sound alike? I've been listening to them each for thirteen years now and have never once mistaken one for the other.

I'd say "yes", but my tape of the blue album was really worn down in '94-'95, and I can't deny the silly anthems of my youth.

the Replacements- Tim (mid-eighties)
the Cure- Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)
Freakwater- Dancing Under Water (1991)
Gallon Drunk- You, the night...and the Music (1992)
Madder Rose- Bring it Down (1993)
Idha (ovelius)- Melody Inn (1994)

(almost) anything by the above are ok by me.

for late 80's early 90's i would definately have to recommend My Bloody Valentine. the album "loveless" is timeless...and i know it's been mentioned, but the pixies dominated that time period in terms of innovation. i recommend all their albums.
