I heard a couple of songs by The Mountain Goats recently, and was thinking of buying one of their albums. I was wondering if maybe someone had a suggestion on a good choice for someone who wants to check them out.

Hey - I can only recommend the latest - We Shall All Be Healed, as I bought it recently and it kicks. His style isn't for everyone, but it caught my ear. We didn't hear much about them here previously, but I think this is the second album on 4AD. Before that I think songwriter John Darnielle used to distribute tapes with plenty of requisite tape hiss ;)
Agreed. The latest one is a magnificent starting point for hopping on the Darnielle train.
After that, I'd recommend either The Coroner's Gambit or All Hail West Texas. Both are 'mid-fi' releases. Should these toot your horn, keep moving backwards through the lower and lower-fi releases.
On the 4AD tip, Tallahassee is kind of flat in my opinion, but there's a bunch of people who may tell you otherwise.

Tallahassee kicks ass.....tMG's best album, in my opinion.....
Of the older, more lo-fi stuff, I'd go with All Hail West Texas or The Coroner's Gambit....Coroner's Gambit is a bit angrier than their other stuff.....
Each album before that has good moments, but none are solid all the way through......those 3 are untouchable, though.....
Best of luck.....:)
