Thank you Morrisey: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2004/04/09/new_york_dolls_reunite_at_morrisseys_request/ Who coulda guessed Izzy Stradlin would appear in a reunited Dolls before a reunited GNR?

MC5 sucked when their singer was alive, I can't imagine they've gotten better with his death.

mc5 was one of the bands that paved the road for your wanker ny dolls.

I'd like to see someone not from Michigan say the MC5 were a good band, because I don't think it's ever happened. They did get the Stooges on Elektra which gave us "Funhouse", but besides that they did nothing.

Praying for the singer from the Mars Volta to take Rob Tyner's place,
VMP

I love the MC5. Not from Michigan.

I don't know what sort of fun yr. looking for w/such a baiting comment, but what the fuck I'll take that bait. The MC5 could be one of the 5 or 10 best and most important rock bands of all time.
Dave

PS Not from Michigan.

Now I regret asking you how the new Reigning Sound album is.

Normally I'd agree to disagree, but in this case i think we all will just agree that you are wrong. Very wrong.

I think the MC5 probably peaked before they ever recorded anything, because none of the albums are really all that great. I've seen live footage, though, that looks absolutely gobsmacking.

you, like Funk, are wrong. All three MC5 records are amazing, 110% great records and you can't really claim a grasp of any sort of modern rock music without them.

I tried to grasp modern rock once, but someone called the cops and now there's a restraining order.

how can an opinion be wrong? and how can anything be more than 100% great? does the sound it make coming out of the record sleeve somehow factor into this? does the vinyl have sustain so that even when it's just sitting on the turntable it's putting out a great low frequency sound?

Dave

This is the sort of thing I was refering to when I said that Funk's statement was "baiting", but I guess I'm still down for it, so heres your answer too.
An opinion could be wrong if was about the MC5 or their records not being great. A band could be better than 100% great if they were as good as the MC5.
Simple as that.

just for your comments regarding the supposed greatness of mc5 i have only two words for you.

you're fired. and you can't see this but i did the hand thing too.

Dave

Last post on the subject. If you don't agree you're wrong, simple as that.
Dave

PS Now that some loser w/the world's worst hair has robbed us of "your fired!" the only acceptable reference to firing would be to quote "Curtis The Millworker" by Judas Bullethead. "All you motherfuckers with ties are fired!"

Well I thought I was done, but then you had to resort to name calling. Now if Rush Limbaugh had said that the MC5 were'nt great at least he's got the excuse of being on drugs. What's your excuse?

Dave

PS I'm really done this time so feel free to compare me to anyone you'd like to, say the Unicorns are great, guitars suck, etc. etc. Anything you want, go crazy.

i never said the mc5 weren't great. if you search the listening post pile you'd see that i was listening to them last week or two weeks ago or whatever.

what i thought was odd was you saying that someone's opinion was wrong, then saying something was 110% great (which by definition is impossible), then compounding that by saying "If you don't agree you're wrong."

sorry chachi but it all sounds foolish to me.

but wait, these amps go to 11.

MC5 suck ass! I mean they are REALLY BAD! Their "politics" are adolescent, dated, and (of course) hypocritical... their music is just a "heavier" trip on Grand Funk Railroad and other hippie-blues shite... ugh... they really suck hard... Possibly the worst band to ever come from Michigan, and I'm including Bob Seger, Jad Fair, Glen Frey, and Parliament in that contention.

New York Dolls, however, could rightfully be called on of the ten best and "most important" bands of all time...

Including Parliament in a sentence about the WORST bands to come out of anywhere is just insanity! The mothership will not be taking you back I'm afraid.

Not being tongue-in-cheek at all, my friend. The Roses' first record is still pretty much my favorite album of all time. :)

As for the MC5, etc--I don't agree with him too often, but when he's on, he's on: as William Safire says, "An opinion may be wrongheaded, but it is never wrong. A belief or a conviction, no matter how illogical, crackbrained or infuriating, is an idea subject to vigorous dispute but is not an assertion subject to editorial or legal correction."

I'm from Michigan and the MC5 are definitely one of the greatest bands to emerge from the mitten. They, along with Iggy and Stooges, performed constantly in the state when they were just rumours in the rest of the country. The 5 are revered by all the rock hounds I know that were lucky to have caught any of those shows. Walk into Flat Black and Circular in E.Lansing, Vertigo Music in Grand Rapids, New Moon Records in Mount Pleasant, Wuxtry in Ann Arbor or any independent record store in Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Kalamazoo or Battle Creek and ask the guy with the long grey hair about the 5. He'll let you know.
