I really like Rachel's Systems/Layers, specifically the admixture of soft compositions and field recordings--conversations, street noise, etc.
Can you recommend other albums that make good use of city sounds, static, conversations, and so forth?
Steve Reich did a lot of this, notably on the albums Different Trains, The Cave, and City Life.

Set Fire to Flames' last double album "Mouths Trapped in Static..." does it even better than Rachel's I think.

And Set Fire to Flames' first album, Sings Reign Rebuilder, does it even better...twice over. I also think that GY!BE's Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is an essential if you are into this kind of recording. You might also check out titles from Labradford and One Mile North (good for hiking).

Lift Yr. Skinny Fists for sure, and the recordings of the composer Charles Ives too.

the david holmes album 'let's get killed' has a ton of great samples of NYC street life. it's totally different than rachel's and everything else listed though ... funky and electronic.
