Anyone know of any good record stores in NYC? I live just outside of the city, but rarely travel in for record shopping because of my lack of knowledge of good shops. i am looking for stores that carry rarities and old 78's, but not expensive like. stuff that you wont find at your typical indie record store.

That's kind of a loaded question but here is the store that fits the bill:
Academy LPs
77 East 10th Street
NYC 10003
212 780 9166

you might also want to try House of Oldies (http://houseofoldies.com/home.html)

35 Carmine Street, New York, NY 10014.

Dude, if you live just outside NYC that probably means that you have a car. That means that you can make it to City Island in the Bronx, home to Mooncurser Records.

Very weird place stocked to the rafters with LPs and 78s. They all seem absurdly expensive at first, until the bearded old man at the counter, Roger Roberge, informs you that all records are half-price. That just makes them kind-of-expensive to quite-a-bargain depending on the record in question.

Definitely NYC's best store for 78s, and definitely one of the best stores in NYC period. Just very hard to get to.

if you were trying to get there without a car, you'd have to like take the 6 train to some bus or something, right? City Island is one of those fascinating places in NYC that no one ever goes to.

Yes. The No. 6 train and then the bus. It doesn't really take that long either. Totally worth it.

Thanks for the help matador employees, I should be taking a trip out to City Island next week and I'll see how I fare. I just need a record player now.
