My anticipation for this album has me worried. I can't recall a situation where I've waited for the follow up to an album I liked as much as I did TOTBL and not been dissapointed to some degree. It's my own doing but it's a tendency I've never been able to avoid.

In many cases the subsequent albums have been great and if they had been released prior I would have loved them. But because they followed albums which were so ingrained in my psyche, they somehow never clicked with me. Ones that come to mind:

Beth Orton - Central Reservation (Stolen Car is one of her best songs, but I wore out Trailer Park and waited so long for CR that it never quite clicked).
Dino Jr.'s Where You Been (Green Mind is still one of my favorite Records ever)
Fugazi's Red Medicine
Sonic Youth Daydream Nation (I know this is blasphemy, and I do love DN, but Sister is just such a flawless album for me).

There are others I'm sure but I'm hoping this doesn't happen with the Interpol follow up.

I think that's natural. you expect the best, but then the new one hasn't worn its way into your heart on first listen, and there's a little sadness.

One time when this *didn't* happen to me, however, was with Kill The Moonlight by Spoon. I loved Girls Can Tell, nervously anticipated the followup, and then the followup, on first listen, blew everything they'd done before out of the water...

which of course makes the forthcoming mysterious Spoon album worrisome.

Obvious enough but I was worried after OK Computer, and it took a while for me to appreciate Kid A, but now I love it's place in the scheme of things.

Strokes - was a bit nervous, then all was great. The Air follow up to Moon Safari hurt though.

Re Interpol, yep, it could be a concern, but somehow i just think i'll be loving whatever happens.

clinic disappointed me with 'walking with thee' and they've been silent ever since. i think they have a new one out soon though ... i know they're touring.

Girls Can Tell was the biggest let down in history after the brilliance of A Series of Sneaks.

Wow, I don't agree at all on Spoon. I love both Series of Sneaks and Girls Can Tell, but they're two entirely different records. GCT was a massive shift of gears, true, but not a disappointment.

My 2 fave Spoon albums, anyway.

girls can tell isn't my favorite spoon album, but in no way is it a let down. spoon has consistently put out very solid records.

re: Spoon. I like all of the Spoon releases, I just wanted an excuse to post that link.

I'm not too worried about Interpol, I've had pretty good luck lately with bands I like bringing the goods for their follow up albums. for example, the Shins blew me away with chutes too narrow. I was also pretty impressed by Room on Fire, which I feel is totally underated. and also, although some people might disagree, I think Our Endless Numbered Days is fantastic.

Anyways, back to my original point, I have faith that Interpol will deliver on their follow up. then again, I'm a bit of an optimist

Likewise, a lovely album. Don't always play it, but it's never dull.

Re: Spoon, great band. Haven't heard Series...but love Girls... and Kill...

JS - It can't have been as big a let down as the genre related Built To Spill Ancient Melodies album!

Chutes Too Narrow is definitely the best example of this for me. My expectations were so high after Oh, Inverted World and I didn't think they'd be able to deliver. Not only did they deliver, but Chutes Too Narrow is pretty close to flawless.

Electric Version is another one that comes to mind.

Girls Can Tell is far from dissapointment. That's an incredible album. If you want dissapointment from Spoon, yr an album too early.

if by that you mean Kill The Moonlight was a disappointment, I say:

whhaaaat?

I'll have to get all Dave-who-works-at-Matador on yr ass and say "you're totally wrong, that record is 110%"
