I wish I was at home right now!
Thanks for Miracle Drug.
With bated breath I await June 8th.

Anyone else having trouble getting this to work?

Yeah, it appears that there is a problem downloading more than just the new ACN MP3, it appears global in nature.
That gives me some comfort that other people can't hear it either!

It works fine for me. Pray tell me precisely what you are doing.

Trying to fetch a file results in an error that would indicate that either the path is invalid or the object physically doesn't exist at the specified path at all.

Hmm..... we've instituted a rule that MP3s are only downloadable when you are following a link from within the Matador site, since we were getting killed on bandwidth from file grabbers and people using our music for background on their web pages etc.
So the link you listed above might not work, but it should work if you click on it from the A.C. Newman music page.
Alerting our ISP here...

Though I should point out that the link above works fine for me... the MP3 starts playing almost immediately.

If you browse to that link from within a "safe browser," it reports a permissions issue.
E'rybodys MP3 access from Matador is broken. May I ask what means were used to implement this rule?
Yeah, I access directly and still nothing. Nothing on any mp3s on the website.

OK folks, we're working on it. Thanks for the headsup.

Ladt and bitterfruit:
A couple of requests.
1. Can you let us know what browsers and versions you're using, and for what platforms?
2. Can you try to accessing a particular MP3 - any one is fine - and let us know which one and exactly when you tried to do so, so we can look it up in the logs?
We're using a simple referer match to allow access -- the referring URL must be matadorrecords.com.

Patrick,
1. XP Pro - w/ all latest service packs, patches
2. Windows Media Player 9.00.00.3075
3. IE6 SP2 blah, blah
I can't seem to open any MP3, even the really old ones. Even attempting to save them locally doesn't work as opposed to streaming them from matadorrecords.com (which I'm sure you guys just fucking love people doing)
By the way, what is musicserver2? Everything on this page (http://www.matadorrecords.com/music/audio.html) that points to musicserver2 ends up taking me to some rather suspicious looking shite.
My FQDN will contain something from leapfrogbroadband.net at the moment.

Thanks bf -
Our old Real Audio 30-second clips were hosted by a third-party company with whom we no longer have a relationship - I don't even know if they still exist. Evidently someone else has taken that domain name.
I need to remove those old links.
For the rest, we'll get it to our ISP for examination.

bitterfruit, do you mean to say that you can stream MP3s in your browser window - you just can't play them when you launch Windows Media Player as a helper app?
That might make sense, since WMP would be calling the MP3's URL directly with no referral from matadorrecords.com.
Btw, judging from our logs, plenty of people are able to play the MP3s. Presumably they're doing so in their browser windows using the appropriate plugins.

I've tried to play them within my browser (Explorer) and it doesn't work. Also, my browser strays from the mp3 page and brings me to a Microsoft page explaining the error that's occured.

Hello...
I noticed that other people were having difficulty getting the "Miracle Drug" mp3 to work. I can't download it (get a message saying that the file doesn't exist, or is temporarily unavailable, invalid file path, etc.), and I can't play it within the browser (not downloading it and saving it to my hard drive, simply loading it like any other page).
I thought it might be my computer, even though I have XP, WMP, RealOne, all that junk...I tried it at a public library, and I had the same problems.
I'm dying to hear this song...any suggestions?

I tried to download and open the files using Konqueror on the Linux platform and it works fine. This would lead one to believe that it was a browser specific issue.
Tried from a Window 2000 client this time and got nothing still. Hope this helps. Just wants my MP3 baby.

Hey bf,
Our ISP believes that WMP whether used in browser or not is not sending a referrer when it takes over the download. QuickTime, for example, doesn't do this.
We're working on a non-referrer solution.

OK...I figured out how to get the mp3...
First, I opened the mp3s page in Netscape (I was using IE before). Netscape wouldn't let me download it, either (right-click, Save Target...), but I left-clicked and loaded it like any other page, and then saved it (through the File menu).
Kinda convoluted, but it worked...
By the way, the song is fantastic.

Opening MP3's has not been a problem for me up until the news of this A.C. Newman download.
However, in both Netscape and IE, whenever I left-click to access any song off of this website, I now receive this error message in the browser window:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /mpeg/guided_by_voices/gbv_best_of_jill_hives.mp3 on this server.
Apache/1.3.29 Server at www.matadorrecords.com Port 80
(I got this message at 1:27 PM PST on 5/15/04)
Right-clicking to download doesn't work either.
Hope this is of help with solving the problem.
I've managed to stream this finally and I like it, bring on the album!

I heard "Miracle Drug" on the radio this morning driving to work, and I had to stay in the car once I got to work to wait for the DJ to say who the song was by, as I hadn't heard it before and was loving it. He said "AC Newman" and I was all "damn, holmes!"
The other song didn't do much for me, but now after this one, holy crap, I'm definitely going to consider getting that slab 0 wax.
anyway, that is all..

First, has anyone else tried this workaround? I know it's a pain in the ass, but I'd like to know if it works.
Second, has anyone tried installing the QuickTime plugin for their browser and then tried to click on the MP3?

tried the workaround, no go. have QT in IE, no go.
Instead, go to Newman personal site, then to Insound.com which is selling the album. Can download track there

The restriction's been lifted. You should all be able to download the MP3 now.
