I was discussing with a friend about what next big regional scene will break next, as it seems the NYC boom has begun to decline.

I'd love to see it become my hometown of Washington DC, since there are many great bands doing great things here, with or without the Dischord monopoly.

Examples:

*Canyon
could very well be the next Calexico or Wilco, very quality mellow folk and psych vibe

*Metropolitan
makes me feel incredibly nostalgic for 1991, jangle guitar and melodic bass that recall great parts of Pavement & SY

*Phaser
heavily influenced by the Britrock scene but better and more spacey than most

*Dead Meadow
great Sabbath vibe, although sort of proven to be one-trick pony; how many stoner riffs are left out there?

and I'm sure there many more I have yet to hear, but that's a start.

What sort of new bands are doing great things in the other scenes around the globe?

Thanks,

the merrimack valley.

previously known only as hometowns to piebald and godsmack, look for fresh new sounds on releases by bands like: have our hill, scoobies doobies, safety scissors, monkey nuts, and meliah craze.

look for them now, your friends will be talking about them in the fall.

Late post, sorry. I'm new to the list and all.

Well, here in Charlotte, NC there isnt much of a scene, but there is one band I highly recomend to any fans of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, etc..... They are called Lou Ford. They have two incredible albums out and tour the southeast a good bit and did a stint on the west coast last year.

I've seen more live bands than I care to count, but I've seen these guys just about 20-21 times and I hope to see them that many times more. Freakin brilliant.

Check em out at louford.com. Buy a CD, you will not be sorry.

They definitely have a Stooges aesthetic going on, so you'd probably enjoy the show.

goes to omaha nebraska... they're all relatively young... the place is big but small in feel enough where people are like your neighbors and the bands are like hometown heros.. omaha, but this also includes bands from the lincoln area...

I hate to say I agree that Omaha is probably the next hotbed, because nary a single band has come from there of late that I like at all (maybe The Faint, but not really).

The whole Saddle Creek set are a little disturbing, but it is great to see a boom someplace new. It's been inspirational to whole bunches of backwater college campuses.

Not that this is anything new really, but the entire Northern European scene cannot be ignored.

Sigur Ros and their brethren seem to have more and more of a showing here in the States.

I don't think we'll see a resurgence in places like Chapel Hill or Athens for a while, though they have great music scenes.

Omaha? Maybe. Stockholm? Definitely.

Omaha definitely seems set on becoming quite a big scene, if not already.
