I was informed last night that if I was spending a day record shopping then I would also be accompanying my good lady on a day clothes shopping - which is cool enough, I'm feeling that - maybe i'll come across paul's boutique?!
does anybody here know where to head for clothes shopping - a very broad question I know, but some general area hints would be most appreciated. somewhere thats not big department stores, not full of tourists (I know!!), just interesting - you know!

not full of tourists (I know!!)...
Maybe the Century 21 in Bay Ridge? In Manhattan, at least south of 125th Street, there's just no way to avoid tourists.

go to a gallery opening while you're in town, and you'll find out.
when you're in town, i'll take a break from lurking in fitting rooms with my camera.

You're gonna have to get more specific on what kind of clothes. New, vintage? Street, designer, Levis, what?

Vintage is so hard... because it's priced up these days, and there's the whole "vintage couture" thing that has eviscerated the thrifts.
Others can comment better than I. Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg, perhaps, and Vintage on Third Avenue near E. 24th St.?
Oh, there's that Japanese-run place on the downtown side of E. 9th St. between First and A, closer to A. Ends in "-os".
There are a million places throughout the East Village and the LES, esp on Ludlow and Orchard Streets.
