I spent a wonderful weekend with this record. Listened to it in the morning several times on Sat. and Sun. while breakfasting and sipping black coffee. And spun it two or three times Fri. night through Sun evening while drinkin' the booze and loving it. The production sounds great ---warmer than the crunchy "Earthquake Glue" and "Fiction Man." I was expecting more of the same from GBV and Tobias. But there is a spare feel to "Half Smiles" that I'm diggin'. Love the acoustic guitar stuff on it and the presence of Toby's janglin' Telecaster. So far my fav tracks are "Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud" "Huffman Prairie Flying Field" "Girls of Wild Strawberries" "Window of My World" "Asphyxiated Circle" "The Closets of Henry" and "Asia Minor." There isn't a track I'm not enjoying though.

Seems to me there's a purposeful lull in the middle, almost like a decrescendo telling you to turn the record over. Then again, I've got a CD so what the fuck do I know?

EG will be my personal end-of-GbV album. HSotD is not nearly as strong. First song rocks hard though.

Feel the melancholy, Susan. Let seep into your pores.

I'm here to throw it down for Earthquake Glue as well. I dig it more than HSOTD.
