I just got Smog --- Knock Knock and I am enjoying it quite a bit.
Are the rest of his releases similar in sound/subject matter?
Any recommendations on where to go next?

I really like Julius Caesar a lot, and you could do a lot worse than that singles comp called Accumulation: None... its a pretty good overview..

Wild Love is his best, in my opinion.
His last release, Supper, isn't too bad either.
Buy everything from The Doctor Came At Dawn and prior (well, not Wild Love; get Accumulation:None in its place), and pretend he sold the band name in late-1996 to some hack and is living large off on some private island.

you've already got his best work. go with Rain on Lens next, it's the next best thing.
Julius Caesar is indeed really great.
I find that I can only listen to him for short periods of time, though. Something about it all just wears on me after half an hour or so.
'Stalled on the tracks......'
Red Apple Falls is a pretty perfect record in my opinion...I dont agree with the worthless after '96 stuff... He may be treading some water now...but Wild Love to Dongs are all good...

You can't really go wrong with Red Apple Falls and Dongs of Sevotion; those two and Knock Knock are tied (and probably forever will be) as my favourite Smog record. I'm a little saddened by the dislike for his recent stuff. I enjoy Rain on Lens a lot, and although Supper is a bit patchy, I think it has stuff on close to being as good as his earlier records. I really adore Our Anniversary, Truth Serum, Vessel in Vain and Feather by Feather. It is a slightly different Smog, and overall not as essential, but still worth checking out.

"supper" is probably his BEST, if most conventional sounding, record. it doesn't, however, have any of the duds that break up the flow of the other sides. Jim White of the Dirty Three is the drummer btw.
"red apple falls," that ep w/the apartment building, "doctor came at down," "knock knock" are next in line... then "dongs," "wild love," "julius ceasar," & the other ep... "accumulation none" has some hot stuff but most (not all) live smog isn't so good...
verdict: if you dig any of it lots, you need it all tho' he can frustrate as much as he inspires.
"supper" #1,

Based on the breadth of the replies, it sounds like I could buy just about anything and have a decent chance of getting something good.
Thanks to all who replied.
