"Trophy Mule" was a song from way back in the bootleg days, also known as "Jason Lowenstein's a Wanker"... I wonder if it's the same song?

Why announce the street date for a record that is seemingly very far away?

Why not?

once they figure out the schedule for the production, etc. I don't see why they wouldn't...

as you would have known if you read the news update from two days ago:

also, if you read close, the release date is somewhat fuzzy.. "on or before August 19th, 2003"

not adding anything to the conversation.. yes...

That's just Gerard's way of being fuzzy. The release date is August 19th.

And the title is now "Earthquake Glue", for the moment and allegedly for all time.

Was the record produced by Todd Tobias again?

Model Prisoner In The Five Senses Realm is a great title.

I agree Ladt, but apparently it's not to be the title (allegedly).

However, the original title of UTAC was going to be From A Voice Plantation, which wouldn't have been as good, so maybe it'll change into something even better.

Also, I hope the new one is produced by Todd Tobias, as I really love the sound of UTAC especially the longer ones like Car Language and Storm Vibrations.

The album is indeed produced by Todd Tobias and Guided By Voices as was UTAC

The Trophy Mules in Particular song is NOT the same as the rarities Jason Lowenstein... song

If you had to say that it fell into one GBV vein or another, which would it be? Or is it completely unlike anything else they have put out?

I guess my opinion is that you couldn't catagorize it with other releases. I think the production of the songs play a bigger part in the songs than ever, in a really good way (Re: not in the cheesy Ric Ocasek keyboard way).

It's all a matter of taste, but I prefer the Isolation Drills production/aesthetics/sound/sentiment over UTAC.

I should probably be more fair than I am and attribute what I dislike evenly about UTAC, but I don't.

I'd be curious to know what about Tim and UTAC makes Bob want to bring him back for more Matador work.

Conversely, we know why Rick Ocasek wasn't asked to come back for another album.

My impression from interviews is that Bob is into longer, multi-themed songs in the vein of Storm Vibrations and The Enemy for this album. Am I on the right track or is he on a new kick altogether?

I'm glad to hear that the title of Earthquake Glue won't be sticking; I agree with the other guys on here who liked the Five Senses title. But I really hope that if Matador have the power to choose the next title, they won't pick The Grooms have hit Glass, just because they find it funny. It's not very poetic, and too obvious a reference to "Brides". I think Pollard likes his album titles to be a little more open to interpretation than that.
I'm also glad to hear that the albums production will be more upfront. I think that recent GBV albums have been missing the atmosphere that could be found on Waved Out, Speak Kindly, Do the Collapse and even Motel of Fools. I agree with you, bitterfruit that Isolation Drills was great (it's actually my favourite GBV album) but I thought that its bare-boned, stripped down production was appropriate to its straightforward and naked lyrical matter.
I think that if only the songs off UTAC that Pollard referred to as well developed were included on that record, it would have been very bland (I've made "solid" mixes of UTAC that reinforce this). When I heard that the new album would be only the well developed tracks, I was worried that the new album would also sound bland. I guess that it could be argued that the new album, as a return to the more straightforward lyrical approach, would warrant Rob Schnapf-type production. But I think that Isolation Drills already was that album, and to try and recreate would not only be uninteresting, but it would also be guarenteed to fall short of those high standards. It's much more interesting that GBV make a lyrically straighforward and solid album that explores many different musical soundscapes. I don't think that Pollard has properly explored that kind of approach to his music yet.

Wow. Well said.

I think Universal Truths and Cycles is the best produced GBV album. Isolation Drills had good guitars but was too samey, the production of UTAC seems to really accentuate the light and dark of the album, and there are some neat tricks if you listen on headphones.

bitterfruit

Point taken. I can understand what you mean, but sometimes that "samey" feel tells a neat story from beginning to end as can other ways as well.

Ladt

Yeah, it doesn't get tedious, but I think a bit of variation could've livened up the album a bit. Which, to be honest, I think it needs.

Side subject related to Isolation Drills:

Try screaming along with "Twilight Campfighter" using a Mick Jagger face at the top of your lungs while driving down the highway.

It's a beautiful thing.

I guess it's a little different on the Tube.
