I have a very vague memory from 94 or 95 or so of there being talk of a pavement live album. i can't remember if it was in the old matador news letter or if it was from the old pavement listserve from that time. I remember something being said about how matador was only going to send the alb.s out to college radio stations as a sort of 'thank you'. Does anyone remember this? Is there any truth to it? And if so, what happened?

Yeah, it even has a catalog number, OLE-170-1.
This was going to be a vinyl-only release, and I think promo-only as well, for college radio.
It was recorded - I think just one whole show, possibly from Minneapolis in Spring 1995 or so - and I remember seeing a master tape, which is hopefully in our archives. However the band ended up putting the kibosh on the project.

Wasn't there some sort of story about the masters being damaged in a car crash or some such nonsense?

Ya I read that there was a devastating car crash and all the tapes were damaged. I read it in one of their bio's. You should release it Patrick, it would be awsome for the Wowee Zowee 2 disc if you added it as an extra disc.

A Wowee Zowee re-issue would be absolutely unbelieveable. Talk about an amazing album with some amazing b-sides.

It's up to the band, not us, but we'll see...

a WZ release with this live album (or any 95 era live recording for that matter) would definitely be incredible and would fit in well with the luxe and reduxe and La's desert origins....
Okay, time to start a candlelight vigil....

Wow, looking back through the latest version of the complete discography (which is about to go up on the site), I discovered OLE-324, which was a Pavement live album scheduled for July 1998 via Matador/Capitol and never released. I have no recollection of this other canceled live project. The notes in the database say, "Orig. 7/98, but initial tape rejected; to be compiled out of different tapes at a later date."

The masters were rejected because they were covered in oil, antifreeze, blood, glass and also were partially burned. Other than that the tapes were good to go.
