Hey everyone, just found these forums today :) I've always been a huge pavement fan and along with that came a love for the pixies, built to spill, and modest mouse. I havent been able to find any bands really over the five years or so i've been listening to these guys that have a similar sound. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm definitely still content with everything I have already but I want more :D

Cheers,
Max

that's quite a can of worms you're opening...

While I think about suggestions, I'd suggest looking through the "listening post" thread and the "purchase post" thread, as they are sort of the pulse of what's being listened to here...

Thanks Tino, i'll start looking into those now. The holidays are getting closer, time to start writing down my list.

You might like the Magnetic Fields, although it's more on the lighter, poppier side of things. Any volume of the 69 Love Songs is a safe bet.

Maximo,

If you're a Pavement fan, you might want to check out the Silver Jews...Steve is on 3 of the albums. The Arizona Record is lo-fi, but quite enjoyable...might be an Ebay only item at this point. Starlite Walker has some great tunes...and then there's American Water which I think is an almost perfect album. The Silver Jews (basically Steve's friend DC Berman) have two other albums...The Natural Bridge, which I find quite enjoyable and Bright Flight which has some good stuff as well.

I would also think you might enjoy some Spoon and some Silkworm.

Yeah, Telefono and A Series of Sneaks are very good. And the Loveways and Soft Effects EPs are some of the best Spoon out there IMHO.

I dislike 'Girls Can Tell' with a passion. Something about 9/11 tracks that make me angry

oh, gotcha... sorry.

That's really too bad, because that album is one of my favorites. Which are the two tracks you like?

Speakin of Merge bands, you should look into Destroyer. Especially the album on Misra that came out right before they went to Merge, called Streethawk: A Seduction. The newest one, Your Blues is incredible, one of the best of this year, but should be gotten as a 2nd or 3rd Destroyer album. It would be a weird introduction to the band, as its all fake strings and horns.

Bevis, you dillhole, Girls Can Tell rules!

"Lines in Suit" is punchy and has that woe-is-me but fuck-it-all attitude.

I much prefer it to Kill the Moonlight.

I actually haven't listened to it for probably 16 months or so now. Maybe my taste has changed :) I'll have to listen to it again. Be nice, i'm trying -not- to spend my food money on Spoon CD's!

I second the Destroyer recommendation. Your Blues was actually the first one I heard and have since picked up This Night. Both are very enjoyable. While the styles are somewhat different, I think Dan Bejar's lyrics have a lot of the wit and musical quality of Malkmus'.

I'll have to ask for Streethawk for Christmas.

yeah, you definitely need to get Streethawk.

I think Bejar's lyrics have a lot less abstraction in terms of imagery than Malkmus', but I think he's got a lot more skewed poetry than SM. That said, the comparison is apt, and I always recommend Destroyer to Pavement fans who may not have heard them, because an appreciation of SM's wordplay isn't far removed for an appreciation of Bejar's. Bejar battles Berman for the spot of "my favorite lyricist," but for different reasons.
