I really enjoyed the first night here in Chicago. The songs sounded great with the full band.
Chan and the band took the stage shortly after midnight and didn’t leave until about 2:30am! Most of the songs with the full band were off the new album. I was hoping to hear He War, but they didn’t play it. After awhile, the band left the stage and Chan moved over to the piano by her lonesome self. She spent the first ten minutes adjusting the mic stand before she finally started playing. The crowd for the most part was pretty good. Other than some people in the back and sides who talked a lot during the set, everyone seemed to be patient and really into it, at least from where I was standing.
With the band, they played through each song cleanly, from beginning to end. But, when it was just Chan, she did her usual start/stop of songs, conversing with sound person, etc…
After a little bit, she switched from piano over to guitar and played a few songs. She then started into the White Stripes song(Dead Leaves…) and the rest of the band ran up and jumped on the stage and rocked out with her. The sound person kept telling her that the management wanted her to play one more song and wrap it up cause the bar was closing(2am). But, Chan and the band pretty much just kept fiddling around, going in and out of different songs, for another half hour.
Finally, the guitar player jokingly started playing the main riff from Satisfaction with his distorted guitar. Chan got all excited and told him to keep playing the riff while she laid down the guitar part she plays on her version of the song. It was really funny. They wrapped up the song, waved goodbye, and made their exit.
Overall, the show was excellent. My only complaint was that the band decided to play the entire show in almost complete darkness on the stage. Unless you were right up front, you could not see their faces. Has it been like this at the other shows on the tour?
You could tell that Chan was having a blast and having tons of fun with the show. Lots of interaction and joking around with the crowd. Anyone go see her solo set on the second night here in Chicago?
I made a recording of the show on my cheap little handheld tape recorder, which, much to my surprise, actually came out pretty good. If anyone wants to trade, let me know!
Good day to you.

regarding the 2nd nite in chicago -- it was truly the best performance i've ever seen from her. i was fortunate enough to see both the cleveland and 1st chicago shows, and while i can dig the band, ms. marshall's talent really shot through the venue. there weren't many -- if any -- serious hang-ups that many of us have witnessed before. the crowd was much more chill, respectful, and tolerable than the previous shows. even during one song -- having forgotten the next lyrics -- the crowd (at least from what i could hear), offered the forgotten words (in a surprisingly non-condescending way).

after a little effort, she got the crowd to sing knocking on heaven's door.

which brings up the subject of the Screamer (the one who chimed in "hey, hey, hey, hey" during knockin') (at other breaks between songs he screamed some pretty farfetched sayings, one of them being: "ITS GOOD TO BE TIRED...blah blah blah...THIRTY FOUR HOURS A DAY")

-- did anyone else see this guy throughout the night? i stood about five feet away from him for the last half of the show (he was making a pretty concerted effort to get to the stage, but kept hiding his face when chan was seeking him out). the boy was frightening, and resembled a really, really, really blasted-drunk 15-year-young crispin glover. i really thought he going to get clocked by the people that he was nudging and spilling his nasty beer on.

i was gonna bite my tongue until it fell right the f off.

But i found out who crispin glover is and no way in hell!

I am both better looking and uglier, creepier and nicer than that guy, im sure.

im flattered you felt the need to write about me even more than that great great performer. You know i drove 3.5 hours for that show, sounds like you been doin some driving too.

Someone did shove me, but i shoved him back and said a special phrase i like using and he backed off.

They kicked me out of the 3rd row at one point. I was all cryin, i never cry like that in public it was crazy. At least they waited for the song to get done before they told me to restart my advance to the front again. At least they let me meditate and cry about it for as long as it lasted.

im better shut up now.

i wanted to see her shows at the Abbey so bad but i couldn't get into the 21+ one, and the 18+ one got sold out, so i was pissed. does anyone know the setlist for the second (18+) show?
and i would be interested in getting your recording of the first one, although i have nothing to trade. i can buy a copy if you're willing to do that...also, what songs did she play at the first show?

as far as the first show in Chicago at the Abbey, she played mostly songs off of You Are Free. She started to play American Flag, but then stopped.
Played that one M.Ward cover..."i went to a doctor, said doctor please, what do you do when your true love leaves..."
Played Knockin on Heavens Door, White Stripes cover, Satisfaction, ummm....that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

You don't have to buy a copy, I can mail you one for free :)
Drop me a line at locust125@yahoo.com.

is your handheld recorder a stereo recorder? I'd love a copy if it is. got lots to trade with and can put it on cd also. If it's not stereo I'll pass as mono hurts my ears pretty bad.
