finally got around to checking out this track - good stuff. i like the production, a bit more hi-fi than the last album.
about 3 minutes in, i was thinking "man what happened to the endless guitar solos?" and then the solos took over for the rest of the song.

I really like the new song... movin' away from the Sabbath and into the Brian Jonestown realm. Awesome.

To me, they're much more of a dronepsych band than a heavy band. I actually thought Matador did them a disservice by promoting them as heavy, heavy, heavy, heavier than anything you've ever heard.

yeah, its a lazy characterization, but it does the job, for me at least. Have you heard the pre-Matador DM albums? Not that they're more Sabbathy, but they're a bit heavier, methinks. Howls From The Hills is my favorite out of all three albums, with Shivering King... right behind...

Howls from the Hills is my favorite, as well.

reading comprehension, tino! reading comprehension!
heh heh..
I don't like the live one at all. Not because the performance, but the sound is atrocious. No low end whatsoever...

Yeah, I think I've spun the live one a total of twice.

yeah i was totally disappointed by it as well ... it also stopped me from getting their other pre-'king' records. perhaps the wrong call.
definitely excited for this new one though.

whoa whoa whoa...
yeah, totally the wrong call. Sorry Matador, but Howls From The Hills is a better album than Shivering King (which I love as well). The s/t first album is good too, but not as good as King, but definitely get Howls right now...
The live albums should just be pulled, because it makes them sound like a crappy band, and they're anything but.

duly noted. part of my xmas harvest was a wallet with some good cash in it ... so a trip to the record store is in order. (not that i'd be paying a visit anyway or anything...)
incidentally, i also got that 'left of the dial' boxset as a gift over the holidays ... tracklisting looks v promising. lots of songs i dig but don't own. plus a bunch i know only by name.

Good luck! The first two are both OOP as the label, Tolotta, has closed its doors. It took me several months to find a reasonably priced copy of Howls from the Hills (I got the debut before Tolotta killed themselves, luckily).

yeah, its unfortunate that the first two are OOP. I got both on vinyl while Tolotta was still active (got Howls about two weeks before the label website said they were all through.. whew!), but some stores might still have them in overstock...
a quick google reveals:

Unfortunately the Dischord store (which carried Tolotta releases) is out and Amazon only has some weird expensive version that seems like a domestic release being sold by someone overseas, so its $21, so don't go there.

hmmm, that sucks. too bad as i seem to remember them having the older albums at their shows. ah well, i may need to play for the MP3's then...
(incidentally, it's funny that the live album threw me off when the whole reason i got into dead meadow was that they blew me away live, twice.)

for the record - definitely the wrong call. 'howls from the hills' rules. i really liked 'shivering king' but 'howls' is the shit. i think i may prefer the 'king' version of "everything's going on" though.
thanks for pushing me to action.

glad to hear their 4th album is comin out, maybe some more unreleased MP3s will follow. i gotta say im shocked by the almost absent mentioning of their first self titled album. really, its the only one i listen to constantly. beyond the fields we know is in my opinion thier greatest song. ive never heard a song like it. grrensky greenlake and sleepy silver door are also classics. although all 3 of thie albums are incredible, i feel the first one is still the best. so raw, with both fuzzed out craziness and melodic masterpieces. saw them a few months ago in new haven, every year or so they play a free show there. ive seen them all and they never disappoint (although i still dont understand the need for a second guitar player). these guys fuckin ROCK!!!
