my local small dirty record shop (the only one in this small uk town to boot) has just purchased some foolish chaps entire record collection... and it's really good and I'm scared of spending the whole weeks wages on it. I've just pulled myself away with bubble & scrape (w/ free 7" still inside), a dinosaur and a fugazi record. but theres so much much more. Can you people please recommend the essentials (if any) by the following artists so I focus on these:
shudder to think
st. ettiene
throwing muses
kristen hirsch
other 4ad stuff (seems to be lots of this but can't remember what)
flying saucer attack
and so much more that I can't remember. He also has french vinyl editions of slanted and enchanted and crooked rain??
Please advise so I can get this stuff before someone else realises!
wonderful avatar...
reminds me of my favourite sopranos episode with pauly...

St. Etienne: I'm not so much a fan of the earlier stuff, but from the late 90s on, they've been pretty remarkable.
Throwing Muses: There's NOT a bad Muses album. Not even The Fat Skier.
Kristen Hersh: Her solo stuff varies, some good/some bad/none great.
Other 4AD stuff: Pretty much anything on 4AD in the 80s is worth hearing with the exception of Dead Can Dance.
Flying Saucer Attack: Not familiar enough to comment, but Funk will probably drop a headful of science on you about FSA.
Any Pavement you find on vinyl is worth owning, unless it's Terror Twilight (which isn't worth owning on any medium).

I'll make it #4, because really if I wanted to hear about menopause and lumbar pain, I'd watch the Golden Girls.

Throwing Muses: The Real Romona and Throwing Muses are really good. Stay away from Red Heaven. Actually, some people think it's fine, but I think it's garbage.
Kristin Hersh: Sky Motel has always been a favourite.
And Terror Twilight is good shit.

Stay away from Red Heaven.
I'm actually a nice guy, don't listen to him......sorry, bad joke....
ANYWAY, for Throwing Muses, the first album is essential......House Tornado and The Real Ramona are also pretty great......stay away from Hunkpapa though......it's scary bad....
Hips and Makers by Kristin Hersh is incredible, and then everything else varies......Sunny Border Blue is up there on my list though, even if the production is weird.....
But yeah, I'd agree that most 80s 4AD stuff is impressive, especially earlier Cocteau Twins (Treasure and Victorialand are my favourites).....Dead Can Dance are only good though if you approach them as if you're working in a new age goods store and are looking for something to play there.....does that make sense?....

Kristin Hersh - Hips & Makers. It's hella swell.
PS: Nice find w/ the copy of Bubble & Scrape!
Cocteau Twins "treasure" is incredible, as are the birthday party.

Forgot to mention, if they have early His Name Is Alive stuff (particularly Mouth By Mouth), you HAVE to get that......I think that band deserves far more credit than they get.....anybody else a fan?.....
