I'd certainly ditch the Beatles, Nirvana, Killers, Jet, Mars Volta, Radiohead, Rapture, Ramones, Vines, and Sublime albums. Also, Sad Sappy Sucker is kind of the shit end of the Modest Mouse stick.

If you like Miles Davis then get some John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Sun Ra.
Also, get some Olivia Tremor Control.
And I'd drop Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and get Clouds Taste Metallic instead.

absolutely seconded.

instead of the Beatles, get the Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society" and any other Kinks album from that era. also, maybe "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

also, no respecting music fan should ever buy a Best Of album. Get a good sampling of REM... maybe "Reckoning" and "New adventures in Hi-Fi" for a bit of Old and New School REM.

i agree on best-of's, though i think R.E.M.'s 'eponymous' does a far better job than most. it did a v good job of getting me into their old material. 'reckoning' and 'automatic for the people' would be my picks for proper albums though.

maximo - in general, i would recommend breadth over depth. things like 'incesticide' and 'pisces escariot' have their moments but i'd add new bands to the mix instead.

Maximo

I agree completely with that statement except with REM. I'm not a big enough fan to branch out and get everything. The best of is a good compilation that sums up what I enjoy-- for me there's no need for anything else. Its honestly the only best of/compilation in my soon to be collection.

As for the kinks-- have em all on record :D

cut all of these. and you should make sure to get the talking heads' more songs about buildings and food.

i don't agree at all on 'best-ofs' or 'collections.' are any of you seriously going to tell me that new order's substance or the fall's 50,000 fall fans can't be wrong are worthless? and abba's gold, c'mon.

Clearly some of your tastes differ in mine haha. What i'm looking for mainly is if you dig BD and i'm missing something-- toss that in, or if you dig BD and hate blood on the tracks, tell me to get rid of it :)

The Smiths' Louder Than Bombs was really my gateway to so much of what I listen to now. I discovered it as a sophomore in high school, and I wore that fucker out. And, yeah, it's a compilation album, but it's non-album singles and b-sides. It replicates a lot of what's on Hatful of Hollow and The World Won't Listen, two British compilations, so I suppose you could start with either or both of those as well.

I'll second the recommendations for More Songs about Buildings and Food (I also really, really like Talking Heads 77) and the Kinks.

You might also want to check out Beatles for Sale. They'd been touring the world non-stop for two years and they were really, really tired when they recorded it. So there's some obvious filler on there, including several covers (like the god-awful "Mr. Moonlight"). But some of the originals are really dark--"No Reply," "I'm a Loser," "Baby's in Black," "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party." Good stuff. Unfortunately, it's only available in mono on CD.

I guess if you have to buy the Beatles on CD [shudder], you'll also want to pick up the Past Masters (Volumes one and two) compilations. They collect all of the non-album singles and b-sides.

I'm all about New Order's Substance. That album is just fabulous, and you should get it. Right now. Ditto on The Fall recommendation if you need to get oriented.

how closely do you plan to adhere to this list? or how closely do you think that you'll adhere to this list? that number of cds doesn't allow for many new releases, which is especially sad in what looks to be a really fucking great year.

maybe some other albums that you should consider buying (all rock since that seems to be yr preference) --

the stooges, [i]funhouse
blue cheer, vincebus eruptum
todd rundgren, something/anything
leonard cohen, songs about love and hate
xtc, drums and wires & black sea & english settlement
roxy music, for your pleasure & country life

Well i'll buy the new releases as they come out so I can stay on top of things-- but this is for the downtime while i'm catching up.

I think that's true about 97% of the time. But sometimes it's a neccessary evil... artists like Chuck Berry, etc, or perhaps 60's groups that were all about the singles, The Hollies for example (as wonderful as their albums are).

Wallerton
01-17-2005, 09:22 AM
I completely overlooked your Rolling Stones choices. You need more Brian Jones-era albums (Let It Bleed barely counts). A lot of people cite Aftermath as the high point of this period, and, as good as it is, I prefer Between the Buttons. My favorite Stones album by far.

I'll second the recommendation for the XTC records, especially English Settlement. Cohen's Songs About Love and Hate is a good place to start, though I tend to prefer Songs from a Room.

And... and... and... so many things to recommend. What are the building blocks of a good record collection?!?

By the way, I don't see any Cure albums on that list. Or Echo & the Bunnymen. Or the Jesus and Mary Chain. Or... Or... most of the other bands that first got me interested in "alternative" music back in the late eighties.

You are missing almost everything Dylan recorded from 1961-1983 & 1989-present.

Stop wasting time on this message board and go buy VU --- Peel Slowly & See box set.

Add another vote for mid-60's Stones.

As others have said, scrap Nirvana and its progeny.

Finally, if you are really intent on throwing money away, I will email you my address and you can send me a check instead of buying Sublime.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Elvis Costello!!!

Armed Forces and This Year's Model are good places to start. And Imperial Bedroom rewards repeat listening.

Yeah. If you like ska, you should get The Specials' eponymously-titled debut album from 1980.

i got a new ipod and i'm only going to listen to 2005 music this year. so far the only thing on it is that fiery furnaces ep, just cause it's the only thing i could find at the store with a 2005 (c). i don't really like them normally, but it's pretty good actually.

Sonic Youth Murray Street
Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
Sonic Youth Dirty
Talking Heads Remain In Light
Talking Heads Fear Of Music
Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

These are all things I would recommend highly enthusiastically.

I would add:

Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings and Food
Stooges - Funhouse
Any Sonic Youth from the eighties
Mission of Burma - Vs.
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
Any Albert Ayler
Sun Ra - Outer Spaceways Incorporated, probably any Sun Ra really
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Miles Davis - On the Corner
Miles Davis - Big Fun
Miles Davis - Live Evil

Something like that. I believe the Interstate 8 EP is way out of print, but I could be wrong. The "Whenever You See Fit" 12" is really great.

I agree totally here. This is a fine, fine album.. the cd version that was floating around for a while was rather thin, but the recently reisussed SACD version of it (and all the stones albums, for that matter) is wonderful. I hear that the mono LP version is a completely different, stronger listen.

it's from the late, great NBC series Ed, which coincidently began it's first day of syndication on TBS this morning.

I certainly wouldn't ditch the Beatles. And there's nothing wrong with a little Nirvana as long as you don't think that Kurt Cobain is some sort of genius.

I might also suggest:

Television: Marquee Moon
Wire: Pink Flag
some Jam
some Buzzcocks

And a little country, motown and soul never killed anybody. (To my knowledge)
