Seems like a big new release day.

In order to spend my $ wisely, what have you folks heard and what's worth buying?

The Bonnie Billy/Matt Sweeney thing (Superwolf) is pretty damned good... better than I'd expected, anyhow.

Lou Barlow's album, which I had absolutely NO expectations for, ended up being a pleasant surprise. Probably a better value used than new, though.

Is it just a good Will Oldham record or does it change the script at all? I don't need any more Palacey records, but if its something totally new and interesting vis a vis the Matt Sweeney connection, I might actually be interested...

It's really kind of southern rock-ish... not as much in a Skynyrd way as an Allman Bros way (that's a good thing).

The Sweeney/Oldham record is really good. Not as good as a straight Sweeney record would be, but still excellent. Buy.

superwolf: i've listened to it twice today, and it got a lot better on that second listen, which means it will only continue to grow on me. it's really my first exposure to bonnie prince billy; i basically bought it off of sweeney's association with the mighty chavez.

i was thinking the southern rock-ish thing too. glad i'm not the only one.

i haven't heard it yet, but i think the six organs of admittance cd will be great, great, great. that's the only thing i would've bought today.

-edit-

and i also had the misfortune of sitting through the entire trail of dead cd.

is it that bad? I've been forced into seeing TOD if I wanna see dead meadow anytime soon. why couldn't they've supported someone better... like judas priest maybe?!

I've heard absolutely NO ONE say anything positive about the new TOD.

I ended up picking up the new Low album, mainly because the best record store in Santa Monica still sucks and wasn't carrying anything else new, besides the new TOD. How can it be that there are no good record stores on the westide of LA? I mean it. None.

Yeah, that album's received a lot of bad press, but I must say that the cover is completely badass.

Any word on the new Graham Coxon or Archer Prewitt?

I trust Matador will be delivering a Sweeney solo record, right?

The new Lou Barlow is some his best work.
I haven't bothered checking out the new Trail of Dead, and don't really plan on to.
I actually like Sperwolf a lot. It's my favourite new release this year so far. Are Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney going to be touring together? I wouldn't be surprised if they play at next months ATP.

they kind of did. matt played in will's band when he toured that crappy greatest hits album of palace tunes. the shows were much better than the album.

Superwolf are headlining the Green Man festival, Hay-on-Wye, uk in August, which is especially good news as its such a good festival. Last year had Four Tet, James Yorkston, Joanna Newsom, It Jo and Danny and lots others

I've never really listened to Bright Eyes. The reviews of "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" have been positive, for the most part. Can you recommend?
