Hmm.. why not set this up as a poll?
I wish vBulletin allowed more than 10 entries on a poll though.

Probably Yo La Tengo and Guided By Voices, even though I am criminally understocked in both. I don't really love anything Pavement did after Watery, Domestic.
Arab Strap
Blues Explosion
Moonshake (although their best album wasn't on Matador)

Well no surprises here... except perhaps Moonshake turning up twice.
Any fans of the dark horses out there?

I wonder if these bands are the same ones that brought you to Matador.
I didn't really know what Matador was until discovering Superchunk. Since then, I've obviously obsorbed others as well.

Since then, I've loved far too many Matador bands to start naming names. They're like a my children—how could I possibly pick a favorite?

When they put out a less than stellar record, no allowance for a week.

Spoon and Fuck are my two favorites, of all the bands who've had releases on Matador.

--Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted was the first Matador release I ever bought, back when I was in college. I listened to it every day--usually multiple times a day--when I first got it. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain might be my favorite, but all Pavement & Malkmus is good, IMHO.
--Spoon: Telephono isn't necessarily my favorite Spoon album, but it's pretty damn good all the same.
--Belle and Sebastian: My favorite B&S album (and, indeed, one of my favorite albums of all time) is If You're Feeling Sinister, which, technically, was originally released on The Enclave (and that's the version I have). Still, I love every album.
--The New Pornographers: I prefer Mass Romantic (Mint) ever so slightly to Electric Version, but it's a close call. "The Laws Have Changed" is one of my favorite songs ever ever ever. (I don't have the Matador reissue of MR, though I hear it trumps the original release sonically?)
--Yo La Tengo: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out is also one of my favorite albums of all time.
I've got other Matador releases in my collection--Cat Power, Arab Strap, Guided By Voices, Interpol... what else?--but those listed above are my favorites.

good call. mine would be burger/ink if they put out more than one OLE release.
brief aside - it took me at least five years before i realized the "OLE" was for ole, i.e. what a matador might say. SM's introduction to "trigger cut" at the matador 10th anniversary show was what did it.

GbV and Pavement tied at #1.
Lynnfield Pioneers sorely underrated. Forever up there for me. emerge, Free Popcorn, their amazing singles....I miss 'em.

I had considered that too, and like you, the lack of other releases stopped me from giving it the nod. Although I can remember Matador once intimating around 2000 that there was a follow up in the process of being recorded by Burger and Voight.
That reminds me, I should check out that Bionaut CD. How would you rate that? I just started enjoying Explosion USA (I thought it was pretty weak compared to Opportunity Knox, but it's really grown on me over the last couple of months).

I like our Modernist CD better than our Bionaut CD, but they're both good.
burger/ink blow 'em both out of the water though.

never heard the bionaut album, actually. i even saw it used last weekend and somehow passed it up in a rare moment of restraint. i have the modernist record, which is pretty good as i remember it - i always seem to go for 'las vegas' btwn the two though.
i'm not familar with either of the others you mentioned - are they also burger/bionaut/etc?

Explosion USA was the Matador version of the Modernist's second album; Opportunity Knox was the first Modernist album, from 1997, on the Eat Raw label. I prefer the first album, but neither are as good as [Las Vegas].

S & E was given too me by a counselor at camp and I immediately became hooked. i wasn't into music that much at that time and this record totally changed me. Stephen Malkmus' s/t was my second record but I remember seeing a Liz Phair cd in my house a few years ago, though I am pretty sure I never listened to it.

Pavement S&E introduced me to Matador. That band, plus GBV and YLT made me a Matador man. Jicks, YLT, Interpol, Cat Power and (I'm a hopin') Little Bobby Pop are keeping me a Matador man.

Circle X is my favorite Matador band. Can anyone at Matador let me know how to get in touch with the surviving members? I would like to interview them for a project, if possible.
Patrick
02-01-2005, 02:43 PM
Hey hstencil,
We're very out of touch with them. Rusty ran into Rick upstate a few months back but we don't have contact details. If we hear from him again, should we pass on a message?

thanks Patrick. If anybody runs into them, please tell them (if they sound interested) that I'm thinking of writing an oral history of Louisville punk and hardcore, and their input on their origins would be essential and needed. Also, I'd like to interview them about later stuff too, maybe for a "forgotten no wave gems" piece or something. They can get in touch via my email, hstencil at yahoo dot com.
btw - this is Joel, not sure if you knew that. Hope everything's swell at Matador HQ.

also I think I know how to get in touch with the Babylon Dance Band folx, but their info would be helpful too.
First matador purchase was No Pocky For Kitty followed by slanted and enchanted...
So favorite matador artists, mine are obvious:
pavement, superchunk, mogwai
Hstencil-
since you are doing this thing on Lousiville punk, any idea what ever happened to the mighty Crain?
thanks!

I don't know what the Crain people are doing now, or how long they were around, or even what they sounded like (hstencil's yr guy for that), but I *do* know that Temporary Residence Ltd. is reissuing the Crain CD this year...

You also might want to look into the Happy Cadavers, David Grubbs's band pre-Squirrelbait; I think they released a 7" but he may have been messing with me when he told me about it.

I know both of those bands but don't have the records. Happy Cadavers is pretty funny stuff.
Crain has been broken up for a while. Jon Cook, one of the main guys, has had a lot of problems with the law and other things, and I don't really wanna go into it, but it's too bad. Temporary Residence is reissuing their amazing first LP Speed with four bonus songs in April. Can't wait (even tho I have one of the 100 originals that came in a glow in the dark sleeve, I still wanna get the reish).

second opinions? i've been hitting all the matmos stuff i own pretty hard the last couple days. it also occurred to me that i've spent more time listening to matmos than any other matador band (this is saying a lot by the way). yes, matmos it is, but i say so without retracting my votes from yo la tengo and thinking fellers.

Yeah-- in my first post (http://matadorbb.bway.net/showpost.php?p=25206&postcount=22), I somehow left off the Liquor Giants (even though I included Ward Dotson as "Favorite Matador Songwriter" or something on another thread).
So, Spoon, Liquor Giants, and Fuck it is.
