Seems like a lot more bands are using it on records ---- Interpol, Bloc Party, and apparently the New P's.
Is it a complicated thing to implement on records? And how would they replicate that sound live?

well, they're used the same way live and on record. Its just a little handheld thing that makes guitar strings sustain (as if a bow was being pulled across it). Its just another way to play the guitar, so as long as you're in control of the sound coming out of the amp, its no difference live or on stage...
Ooh, I can answer this.
E-bow's are very simple, and very cool to use. You hold it over the strings and the vibrations cause infinite sustain. Being in a band that uses one a lot, I can tell you that it's very easy to use, even live. You can drone around and even make it sound like a backwards loop very easily. If you use a wah wah pedal it sounds like a fucking pedal steel.
They've been around since the 70's, they were used a lot in the 80's and they seem to be coming back around now. They're incredible little things.

Maybe I was overcomplicating it because of the seemingly intricate sound particularly on the "Antics" track entitled "Take You On A Cruise." It would seem to me that it would difficult for Interpol to play that live.

He's just holding it above three notes. It's easier than picking really.
