Yeah, Andy Lookout! posts on ILM (more frequently in the past than now) and he's always been a really nice dude. Since the beginning, they've usually released at least one album a year I really like, and the average has gone up in recent years.

putting out records by people that you like hardly makes them valid, almost every label does that. or is this such a really bad era in music that people putting out albums by bands that they like makes them seem awesome? this is kind of parallel to people who argue that a crappy pop musician is cool just because they actually write their own songs, whereas most do not, in which their cool factor goes up a couple notches.
tinobeat
02-02-2005, 02:16 PM
what exactly makes a label "valid"?
you liking the bands on it?
winterwooskie
02-02-2005, 02:20 PM
yes. but when most of your roster consists of punk posers then they are not that appealing to me. lookout records is in the same category as epitaph, that fat wreckords thing, and victory records in terms of labels that are crap. regardless of how they put out albums by bands that they like.
tinobeat
02-02-2005, 02:26 PM
that's kinda dumb. They're all valid labels that serve a niche in the music world. Epitaph has put out some great records. Fat Wreck? er.. not so much, but they're an important and influential label in that scene.
A crap label is one that fucks its artists over and is doing it to cash in. Any label, no matter what kind of music, is a good and valid label if they do it with integrity. Every label will have skeletons in its closet, but to call Lookout a crap label because you don't like the bands on it is dumb.
As many bad records as Epitaph has put out, I still have to give them love because Mr. Brett is the fucking man! (this task became a little harder during the Offspring years)
All the labels you mentioned used to have a definite musical indentity, just like Sub Pop did, just like Touch & Go did... except they happened to focus on pop/mall punk for the most part. How does your distaste for the label's roster make it any less of a label?
Thankfully, they've been branching out in recent years (although, I could be wrong about Fat Wreck Chords... I don't know anything about them) and given us Ted Leo, The Oranges Band, The Lashes, Communique (Lookout!) and made new homes for Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and Elliott Smith (Epitaph).
Just admit your logic is flawed, and we can move on.
Winterwooskie
You seem to have forgotten that you accused Mary Timony of "slumming in the mall punk ghetto." My response was based on that statement, which I still can't fathom. Maybe I didn't make it plain enough, but what I am getting at is that I feel that Lookout is first and foremost trying to put out the kind of records that they like to listen to by people that they actually like. When you say that "almost every label does this" I'd say: Uh-uh!
I would also say that maybe you haven't investigated the Lookout roster that much as they are a much more stylistically varied label than Epitaph and/or Fat Wreckords (fine labels that have put out some fine records if you ask me*) or the others that you are so keen to lump them in with.
You should get over this hang up of what label a record is on and deal with the records individually. I mean, how do you feel about Rough Trade? But if you really hate every record ever released on Lookout so much that it is going to taint your experience w/Mary Timony's record then what can I say (that I haven't said already)
Dave

I like how he now claims he's for civil unions but still against marriage for same-sex couples. And what's the difference, I wonder? My guess would be because civil unions would have no legal status whatsoever compared to marriage. Some benefits for legally married same-sex couples in MA are already being denied, from what I've read. Specifically, spousal insurance has been denied with the companies claiming they are based in other states and other states legally do not have to recognize same-sex marriages, thanks to DOMA. I would think that companies must follow the laws of the states in which they are doing business not just the state where their corporation headquarters are based. That may not be legally correct, though. Any lawyers here?

Clearly an IP issue. Did they think that no one would notice?
I think it would be a slam-dunk legal case. Obvious attempt to recreate the same image, except with a blue hue instead of a red hue. "Major" obviously replacing "Minor." I should hope that, no matter which judge this goes before in the entire country, Dischord would walk away with a handsome settlement. A blind horse could render a correct verdict in a case like this, even.
But... you never know what kinds of things can happen when you've got a bankroll the size of Nike's.

Jesus being coach might be OK. Jesus as equipment manager could mean they'd all be wearing sandals.
I also didn't realise that thing in Thrasher was a Nike ad. That's unbelievable. Of course it had to be Minor Threat, it couldn't have been any of the other skater favoured bands from then. I wonder if whoever put together the ad even knew what he was doing (meaning knew about the whole MacKaye/Dischord background behind it). Reason number 678 not to buy Nike. Their products suck, too. I remember when Mats Sundin was endorsing them, he soon had to stop wearing their skates they were so bad. Of course, they solved this problem by just buying all of Bauer (reputable equip. manufacturer). Bastards.

Not to be difficult, but I don't know a single serious runner that wears Nikes. Not that there probably aren't some somewhere, but if you go into an actual runner's store, they almost always (around here) don't even carry them, even if they carry their shorts/socks/whatever. I wouldn't even bother mentioning that, except to point out that it's not out of an anti-fashion stance that I think they bite. Their foray into hockey gear was typical, put all resources into buying endorsements (adveritising) to try to sell a hastily assembled product.
Even though I'm sure some of their stuff has to be good (basketball?), to me they just epitomise the worst kind of style-over-substance, 'wear this and you'll have worth as a person' adveritising/marketing that I think is really low. Sorry about the rant, I don't like them at all.

London slightly more, though, because these were just innocent people on their way to work who had nothing to do with what's going on in Iraq. The majority of deaths in Iraq are in zones where warfare is already taking place and are, for the most part, people who are participating in the warfare.

yes, lets agree that its all fucked up, a tragedy in every respect.
however, to suggest that the only Iraqis getting killed are the ones involved in actual warfare is pretty misguided. the "zone where warfare is taking place" is most of the country, and most Iraqis aren't taking arms...
in any case, its a tragedy on all sides, and makes me wonder when sanity will finally be restored.

Paul, an enormous amount of civillians have been killed in Iraq since combat began. Like, thousands upon thousands. Check out here (http://www.iraqbodycount.net) for some stats.. even if they're exaggerating the number it's still in the thousands and its murder, every single wayward bomb, every civillian caught in gunfire, etc. Indeed, they estimate 600 civilians killed in April alone.
They are both tragedies and horrors no doubt, and comparison between the two is a stupid endeavour, however, I gotta say, the loss of innocent life in iraq is stunningly, stunningly higher than London.
Look, I'm not trying to diminish the importance of the staggering number of deaths that are taking place in Iraq. War shouldn't even be happening there, as far as I'm concerned.
But Iraq is a warzone. London's not. That's what makes the bombings more of a "WTF moment" in my mind.

Currently the daily carnage in Iraq mirrors the above exactly. And to show this isn't knee-jerk anti-Americanism, it's not at this point being done by Americans for the most part.
Can we agree it's all fucked up?
Yes, we certainly can. Sorry if my last post sounded bad, I wasn't in a great mood last night Pabost.... my only point was that a life in one country lost senselessly=a life in any other country lost senselessly, and thinking otherwise is a large part of what leads to stuff like this. Which I'm sure you know.

Uniformity: newly chic
McDonald's contracts top designers to refashion its uniforms for a streetwise, hip-hop culture
But the $80 million attempt to make fast-food workers' attire desirable is misguided, analysts sayq
DAVID GRAHAM
FASHION WRITER
The fast-food worker's uniform is dead.
Or does it just smell that way?
This week when the execs at McDonald's announced the company was investing $80 million and contracting the services of an international fashion designer to develop its newest line of street-inspired uniforms, burger flippers across the continent flipped out.
McDonald's is hoping that if the uniforms are cool enough, employees will want to wear them, even when not at work.
Fat chance, say two Toronto McDonald's employees, annoyed that their employer would turn them into walking sandwich boards. So far, the decision affects only employees in the United States.
Paul Vandenburg, a 28-year-old employee at a McDonald's on Yonge St., laughed at the idea of wearing uniforms with labels by Sean John or Tommy Hilfiger. He said no matter what it looks like, he wouldn't wear it outside work. And he doesn't think teenagers would either.
"I don't know why they would want fashion uniforms to stroll outside in," Vandenburg said.
A teenage employee at the McDonald's inside Union Station also balked at the thought of hip and trendy uniforms. "That's ridiculous," the girl said. "Just because I could get away with wearing it outside of work doesn't mean I would."
If McDonald's follows through on its plans, its tactics could spell the end of the fast-food uniform as we know it a row of spotty teenagers ready to serve in matching polyester polo shirts and tacky paper hats. Uniforms, even the bad ones, are used to promote brand identity and further a sense of unity among staff.
But according to some researchers, they won't help you sell a hamburger.
New York-based Brand Keys is the only research consultancy in the world that specializes in customer loyalty. According to Brand Keys president Robert Passikoff, "the uniforms the employees wear make a .005 per cent contribution to loyalty and profitability. A `clean' uniform makes closer to a 1 per cent contribution. You have to sell an awful lot of hamburgers to make up for the cost of half a million new uniforms." He said McDonald's is dreaming if it thinks new uniforms will boost sales. He calls it "Field of Dreams" marketing. "If we design it they will come ... but don't count on it."
"The desire is to create uniforms that our crews would want to wear outside the restaurant environment," said McDonald's spokesman Bill Whitman. Many of the designers considered for the contract are favoured labels in hip-hop culture. But the face of this world, particularly as displayed on MTV, is fascinated with the high life, with the appearance of wealth, furs, bling and Cristal champagne. You have to ask why anyone would wear oil-soaked, ketchup-stained McDonald's hip-hop streetwear outside the restaurant. To show off that they are in a menial job making minimum wage?
Currently McDonald's uniforms vary among its franchises nationwide, but recent styles include a white "business style" collared shirt with small breast pocket, dark polyester pants and a belt, Whitman said.
The traditions of fast-food uniforms run as thick as a burger joint grease trap.
Since the 1950s, uniforms have been used to promote safety and neatness, and as a means to save workers' own clothing from grease splatters and ketchup stains. Employees are made to feel thankful because they save wear and tear on their own wardrobes. And some critics suggest employers often use uniforms as a benefit to offset wage increases. On the benefits list on the McDonald's Canada employment website, free uniforms are second, above "discounts on McDonald's food at your restaurant all the time."
But as long as there are Catholic schoolgirls rolling up their kilts into miniskirts, there will be fast-food workers resenting hairnets and cheap fabrics.
They may complain that uniforms suppress their individuality and the cheap fabrics itch.
But branding experts predict that no matter how much employees like their new uniforms, they will not want to wear them to school or out to the clubs.
"Good luck," said Bev Tudhope, chief executive of Interbrand, the largest brand strategy and design firm in the world. "They are dreaming in Technicolor if they think that any kid would want to identify themselves with McDonald's. I can see it working in the store. But not outside and you know they are going to brand the uniforms with an identifiable colour scheme or those golden arches or some form of the company's graphics. If they don't there's no benefit to having staff wear the clothes away from work. And it's not a uniform."
Barbara Atkin, fashion director at Holt Renfrew, said people don't want to advertise what they do for a living. "Branding is about performing and people don't want to perform all the time. When we get off the stage, we want to go back to who we are, to become real again."
Tudhope suspects McDonald's is trying to "steal brand equity" from the designer it chooses. McDonald's has approached top designers, including Tommy Hilfiger and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
Other possibilities include the preppy Polo Ralph Lauren and Abercrombie & Fitch, Italian designer Giorgio Armani and the too-cool-for-school hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons label Phat Farm.
Many say the redesign is aimed at countering the bad publicity that resulted from Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me film, said Anne Roggeveen, marketing professor at Bobson College in Wellesley, Mass.
It already uses hip-hop and other music to sell burgers and promote its brand. McDonald's hired music mogul Steve Stoute, who runs Translation Consulting and Brand Imaging, to secure the connection. McDonald's has also recruited singers Justin Timberlake and Destiny's Child to chant its new "I'm lovin' it" campaign.
McDonald's has also offered royalties to rappers who include the "Big Mac" in their lyrics. Theoretically artists would receive a royalty based on the number of times the record is played on radio.
The company has given its menus and its ads a makeover. And in further efforts to reshape the brand as hip and active, even the cheesemeister himself has been given a new look. Ronald has emerged from clown boot camp leaner, energetic and hipper in a fierce red jogging suit.

An unfortunate footnote to all of this is that the live 8 thing in combination with the G8 conference caused the major press outlets around the world to take a serious, widespread interest in the poverty of africa... that coverage has vanished in the wake of the 7/7 murders.

and better, ann coulter going, "oh new yorkers won't help relief efforts post-katrina" and, when called out on nyc firefighters being some of the first in NO says, "yeah, of course. nyc firefighters aren't new yorkers; they're americans." OH WAIT THAT'S COMPLETELY TYPICAL.

i just have a playlist in itunes that contains everything on my ipod - and it synchs to that, not to my itunes library (which is way bigger). you might be able to do that to avoid the pain. (though deciding what to take off the ipod is always brutal...)

Following on from the Ok Go thread, seriously this is the worst band ever ever ever. If they spent as much time on their songs as their synchronised dance moves (and their wardrobe) they'd be huge. I took a video on my mobile phone which anyone who is in dire need of a good belly laugh is welcome to. If I could possibly post it I would.
And to complete their brazen lack of humility they hung around Vicar St hawking punters for email addresses for their uh, database.
Shameless (but ridiculously funny) carry on of the highest order.
