so january is in the books - what's the grabbed the early lead for your album of the year?

it's the M.I.A. album 'arular' for me. LCD soundsystem and cass mccombs round out the top 3. there's a lot i still need to hear though.

Excepting Bloc Party (which leaked back in November), here's my favorites from 2005 so far:

The Kills, No Wow
Eluvium, Talk Amongst The Trees
Cass McCombs, Prefection
TTC, Bātards Sensibles
Hood, Outside Closer

I think the only 2005 releases I've bought/heard so far are

Major Stars - 4 LP
Destroyer - Notorious Lightning and Other Works CD

both kickass.

I'll let you all know how I feel about the shit you listed when it actually comes out and I can hear it...

fuckers. ;)

hey now, one of mine has already come out. (admittedly, today.)

if we're counting official releases only, i throw the furnaces EP in there. i should've prob included it originally.

hey paul, is TTC that french rap record you were pimping on 75oL? the french rap i've heard has been really, really bad.

okay earl, so i sat through arular 4 times in a row this afternoon and it's definitely the best thing i've heard so far. i'm so wowed by it that i can't even really talk about it yet. jesus.

others:

chemical bros, push the button
lcd soundsystem, lcd soundsystem
fat day, unf! unf! (actually this cd just makes me want to see them live)

-edit-

and i have impossibly high hopes for six organs of admittance, which i should get on thursday or friday?

Though I can imagine the album being good, as they bring the rock well, I can't think of a more annoying band to see live. Lots of shenanigans that scream "trying too hard." Its a shame too, because it seems like its there to hide any lacking in the music, but there isn't.

I don't think they'd be better off just standing still and playing, but the gray area between that and what they do is large...

hmm, i haven't heard anything about fat day live until now. i just thought that in the load tradition of having cds that promote live shows (which is the impression i get from most load albums)(instead of vice versa) they would be pretty killer. i was hoping for the opposite of ex models, whose cds i love but whose shows i hate.

-edit-

this should be a really awesome month for new music -- damon and naomi, m.i.a., hood, and lcd soundsystem. woo.

I'm just messin around actually. I didn't think it was great, but didn't hate it either.

If it's anything like the Bloc Party record, I'll be back with my tail between my legs.

Matt Curreri played here a few weeks ago but I didn't have money to buy his record and I'm kicking myself because he doesn't play here very often. Anyway, he's not new but I just found about his stuff. He's up on myspace http://www.myspace.com/mattcurreri

I totally forgot that I got the Turpentine Brothers new (1st) record. Tara from Mr. Airplane Man, a band I'm generally meh about, plays drums, and its one of the best new straight-up rocknroll albums I've heard in ages.

Was the U.S version of this an enhanced cd? The 4ad version has a funny little movie of cass and a load of others jamming in a darkened room, playing a whole bag of randomness!

I got this through the post today, along with the new cass mccombs record and m. ward duet for guitars, and on first impressions this is one of my highlights so far for 2005.
