a) the Sea and Cake? (been digging Sam Prekop's new one, haven't heard anything else!)
b) Silkworm?
c) Crooked Fingers?
d) Stereo Total?
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated!

Silkworm...
Start with any of the following: Lifestyle, Firewater, or It'll Be Cool. Honestly get all three-- you can get em for like $25 total off of Amazon from the independent sellers and I feel it's essential to have them all.

For The Sea and Cake, I'd recommend starting with "Nassau," which is really really great. I'd say it's more reflective and melancholy than their other records, and it succeeds wonderfully in just being darned pretty and a great listen.
You'd want to get the self-titled first album after that, which is also stellar.
From there, if you dig their sound, I don't think you can lose in any direction with regards to purchasing the other albums.

i think 'the biz' is the best place to start, but you can't go wrong with any of the first three.

re: sea 'n' cake, don't start with the fawn. it'll mess it all up for you. i second nassau, which is probably my favorite of theirs, and raise a one bedroom.

'the fawn' was actually my first one, but "the argument" is such an amazing tune that there was no looking back.

agreed on "the argument."
I myself would start my The Sea And Cake education with The Biz, where Paul started mine...
Silkworm - Developer and Lifestyle are both great places to get down with the worm.
Yeah, The Biz is still what I'd recommend.
As for Crooked Fingers, the first two lps and the covers ep are totally solid. The third lp is spotty and the new one is terrible.

i don't think that the fawn is bad, but i don't think it has that something that really makes a sea and cake album great (i still don't know exactly what that is)(probably cos i haven't listened to them in so long). "the argument" is the first sea and cake song i ever heard, and it's still one of my favorites, but still. as i recall, bitterfruit said that he bought the fawn before any of the others and he lost interest before he realized they were a pretty cool band.

Oui has always been my favourite Sea and Cake album.
Lifestyle would be a good choice for Silkworm.

anyone have any thoughts on shrimpboat? i've never heard em, but i've been so wowed by the coctails (archer prewitt's old band) in the past couple months that i think it's time i checked out prekop's pre-TSAC work.

Shrimp boat is pretty cool, much more original than the Sea and Cake I find. Any of their albums have their ups and downs but they're all damn good.
