Fascinating background. Wish I could have the NYC show. Article (http://www.niralimagazine.com/features/0410_mia.html) is a few months old, but an interesting read anyway.

so, I just heard Arular, and all I can think is that this has to be some giant cosmic joke that I don't get the punchline to.
excuse my sweeping generalization: sri lankan discovers dancehall. white people discover sri lankan who discovered dancehall.

there's a lot more going on in M.I.A.'s music than some newfound fascination with dancehall.

i find 'arular' more immediate and accessible than the dancehall i've heard. all her press focuses on the fact that she's sri lankan, but that's the part that i probably hear the least with her.

If "10 Dollar" doesn't make it onto my next strip club mixtape, then my name's not b-b-b-bitterfruit.

don't believe the hype. or the "out of nowhere!" bullshit. she used to "design" elastica album covers (yugh).
So the album release is delayed, huh? I wonder what the offending sample was...

She sampled an old song by The Secrets, and my lawyers are gonna eat her alive!
give me that hype money!
er...
I started hearing rumors last week that she'd jumped to Interscope, and PFM confirmed it this morning.
Was there really a sample dispute, or had the Beggars guys been handing us lies all along? Because, really... that's lame.

well we've had some US stock of the album over here in our warehouse, so although I have no idea what's going on, we wouldn't have pressed them just to tell a lie!
I wasn't being all that serious... just playing a drama queen.
So, in such a situation, does the new label/distributor buy out the old stock, or are you forced to eat the cost and then destroy it all?
not sure - I'm guessing cause we're releasing it over here a bit later on, unless there's a difference with the stock, that we'll just use that stock for our sales instead.
I've not heard anything about this though, so not 100% sure what's going on! I probably know as much as you do, after reading the Pitchfork story...

Robert Christgau wrote a damn good article on M.I.A., her past, and her connection to the Tamil Tigers.
It's on the Village Voice website...do a search for it.
