I think we should have a thread where you can post about the latest gigs you've been too, whether they're massive international acts or just local bands, whether they were good, bad, stunning, horrible, etc etc.

I saw Gomez play last week (incredible) and last night I was fortunate to witness 4 solid hours of the funk with George Clinton and Parliment Funkadelic. I swear, the beat only stopped once or twice in 4 hours. Amazing stuff.

I think there was a thread like this a while ago. But anyway, I haven't been to a show in a while but I'm seeing Black Mountain on Monday and The Gris Gris on Wednesday.

saw sonic youth at maxwell's over the wknd, and oh man WHAT a show. it was actually the least noisy SY show i'd ever seen, but they were super tight. and i'd never been able to see and hear them all so clearly before. they ended with "catholic block" and "schizophrenia" and the world was right.

Saw Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard Friday night at the Beacon. Enjoyable show. You have to be prepared for hit and miss when you see Bob, even though he can still be interesting when he misses. Generally, he hit with the newer songs and missed with some of the best known older songs.

Hag was really good, but a little mellow/too quiet. Nine piece band. Could have turned up the volume for the "rockers."

wonderful show from new order tonight. it was fantastic to finally see them. on paper, i always thought it was weird that they played so much joy division. it made total sense live though. "transmission" was amazing, "temptation" too. they can definitely be a little sloppy live but whatever, no one really cared. i was really pulling for "the perfect kiss" though. ah well.

the only big show I *know* I'm going to in the future is SM+Jicks with Paik. that's gonna be so hot.

i'm seeing deerhoof on sunday, really looking fwd to that one. not familiar with dymaxion on record but i saw them open up for someone (of montreal?) last year ... they were good. i also think i saw them open up for stereolab years ago, and i really dug em then. i remember they only had a tape for sale at the merch stand.

didn't like the Russian futurists much. same beat over and over, seemed like.

the guy from junior boys was really sick but he still played about 5 songs. props for that. I ended up buying Last Exit.

now Caribou, Caribou was freakin' awesome. I anxoiusly waited all night to see what they would do with those 2 drumsets. and they did not dissapoint. they really put on a great show.

Just saw them last night. They moved the show from the Ex-Plex (the Echo) to the Vanguard Theatre due to high demand methinks. The Vanguard is less a theatre, more a converted warehouse behind Qtopia on Gower and Hollywood. The space made for a very cavernous mix but that didn't stop Of Montreal from putting on an amazing show. The band sounded tight and the set was very cohesive. I never knew that Kevin Barnes was such a frontman, kind of Bowie-esque or a more fey/less muscular Jake Shears. They covered "Alright" by Supergrass in their encore and it was the conversion of two forces that I truly love. In short, I left content, hoping to see them again soon in a space with better acoustics.

They were fantastic, thanks. They're down to three drummers and Eye on vox/noise. They pretty much locked into a groove the whole time, but incredibly impressive were the small changes that were done as a unit, and the big changes all on a dime. Crazy to see three drummers that tightly together. They got a huge ovation, esp considering it was at a jazz festival. Apparently not everyone enjoyed it as much, though. Anyone interested in seeing a broader cross-section of opinion (or deciding for themselves), can look here:

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=44071&page=0#startcomments

Keep in mind it was at a jazz fest. An avant garde one, but still. Not everyone there was necessarily there to see them. And everyone was sitting down. For a band consisting mostly of three drummers. And William Parker's Little Huey big band was excellent, too, but got mixed reviews. So it's a bit of a weird crowd. I'd be shocked if many people that saw any of the other shows (where it was just them playing a show and everyone was there just to see them) had anything negative to say.

SM was pretty good, but somehow, either it was me or the band, but the energy wasn't hitting me. SM answered his cell phone after the first song, which was pretty weird. His band was making fun of him though. Joanna said "well, you know Matador's a tough label to work for, you gotta be available to take a call whenever." I dunno, I felt old and tired at the show.

The other annoying thing was that my ticket said 8PM, but I didn't realize that meant that Paik went on EXACTLY THEN. So I missed most of their set. What I did see was mind-crushingly awesome tho...

I saw Dinosaur Jr this week. It was great because I love their music, but it was fairly obvious that they haven't been practising much. There also seems to still be a fair amount of tension within the band, namely Lou and Murph vs. J, and by-god it was loud, the 'three-day ring' is in full effect. (note: that refers to ringing in the ears)

So a mixed bag to say the least, hopefully it'll improve as the tour progresses.

so many questions!

TheSadDebaser
06-16-2005, 04:42 PM
it was Kurt and a drummer. the drummer had a cool like echo effect on his voice or something.

the two songs I heard were shoe-gaze-y. my brother said the first one was called "Ginger" and the second one had a chorus that went "Sooner or later/Out light will fade/And you know/Sooner or later..." or something like that. I want to get whatever album that's on.

I'm thinking about going to go see this Clap Your Hands Say Yeah band on Monday at Knitting Factory.

tinobeat
06-16-2005, 07:42 PM
so just a two piece? holy crap...

"Ginger" is a classic, off the Brief History of Amazing Letdowns. the other song isn't ringing a bell with those lyrics, so I don't know...

essential Lilys:
Eccsame The Photon Band, which is spacey, shoegazey stuff.

Better Can't Make Your Life Better, which is the more mod-pop stuff. stunning songwriting.

Those are two best to start with. The split album with Aspera Ad Astra on Tigerstyle is amazing too...

I have In the Presence of Nothing, but the label was misspressed over, so I can't listen to half of the first side. But I didn't pay for it, so I've never worried about it. I have Better Can't Make Your Life Better and The Three Way, but they're not mine, either my brother's or my sister's.

Kurt was a pretty strange sight. Tall and hair cut short and he was acting kinda strangely. not that that has anything to do with anything.

I went to the Moveable Hype show tonight but only saw two bands: Man in Gray and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Man in Grey were pretty good, I got their CD and they're kind of like Pretty Girls Make Graves. The girl singer is kind of cute but she was thrashing about in such a way which was not elicited by the music the band was playing. That was kind of funny to watch.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were awesome and I got their CD too and it's great. They're gonna be popular.

I'm going to see [b]Judas Priest tomorrow night, then hopefully Gang Gang Dance afterward, if Priest end early enough (I'm thinking it won't be a problem).

I saw Gang Gang Dance a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Not sure if they're still touring with them, but the opening band called Blood Lines were pretty damn awesome too, kind of in the same way that US Maple is strangely awesome to watch.

How were Panthers? I wanna see them so bad. "Let's Get Serious" is all I have yet, but it's awesome. Awful. I eventually walked out (I've never heard their records). Note to bands: Opening your set with a much covered song (Pink Floyd's "The Nile Song" in this instance) is no way to win me over.

I was gonna do a rundown of recent shows I've been to but there have been too damn many! Since, the beginning of the year (all in Atlanta or Athens unless noted):

6/9: EyeHateGod/Light Pupil Dilate, Drunken Unicorn

damn. i thought i went to a lot of shows, but i am clearly an amateur!

IIRC, my death metal-obsessed friend was telling me about eyehategod's live shows and they sounded CRAZY.

They're gonna be popular.

i totally should've gone to this, but i had plans to see this band hinkley at sin-e late night (who were good, but played too many new songs and were missing a guitarist). i wasn't feeling up for a trek down to tribeca beforehand, would've loved to see CYHSY though. ah well, i think they're playing south street seaport in august so maybe i'll catch em then.

how full was it?

I don't really know because I kept in the back since I had to leave early, but it seemed pretty full for CYHSY, and they weren't the headliner (Fame? I've never heard of them). I wish I could've stayed for the whole show.

Everyone in front of me was ten inches taller than I am. I need platform shoes or something.

great sleater-kinney show tonight, the new songs sounded awesome. they covered danzig's "mother" during the 2nd encore, during which there was a mosh pit on my left and two chicks making out on my right. only at a sleater-kinney show. and they played it straight into "dig me out," a perfect ending. the new songs were the highlights though, by far. the old stuff doesn't fit into their sets as well now.

and dead meadow totally killed opening up. just the core three this time, unlike when i saw them in the winter. didn't make a difference though, "at her open door" was the only song to feel a little empty and pretty much every song nailed it. i might even prefer the smaller lineup, it gives more freedom to the bass/drums. they played the fast version of "everything's going on," which i was psyched to hear.

Last night I saw Comets on Fire, Growing, Sunburned Hand of the Man, and Magik Markers

quick sumup:

Magik Markers: Crap. I don't know how this band made it out of western MA, let alone sharing a stage with Comets on Fire and (soon), Dinosaur Jr. One-dimensional, totally devoid of anything other than a spectacle I've seen tons of bands do (better).

Sunburned Hand of the Man: I like this band's records, but they've never come close to doing anything remotely interesting live. Its the hard part of being an all-improv band, I guess. When they make records, they probably sit around and play for hours until they work out some shit that sounds good. The chances of them hitting something truly worthwhile on stage are small, unfortunately.

Growing: One of the best bands playing now. Monumental fuckin drone, delicately composed, works from a bliss-out angle *and* a detailed listening angle. These guys solved the puzzle.

Comets on Fire: Unreal, fiery fucking rock music. I don't have much to add other than that. It was awesome seeing Ben Chasney thrashing around the stage too, having seen him a coupla times as Six Organs. I prefer him in his "rock monster" form over his "psych bard" form.
A+ SHOW WOULD SEE AGAIN THX.

I NEVER get to see Sleater-Kinney. I've missed them about three times now in the past three years. At least I saw them opening at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve, but they got shitty sound treatment.

One day. One day!
