Holy crap, I just found out that Paik (http://www.beyonderrecords.com) is opening the Boston SM+Jicks show...

Just got my tickets... wanted to share the excitement. Paik are amazing.

they were oh-kay... i really liked them at first, but they got a bit tedious after a while, as instrumental acts tend to do for me.

actually, i'll dig deeper. great drum sound, what with the bonham-sized kick. that was the biggest kick drum i've ever seen not in a marching band. the guitar player seemed like a bit of a dork to be honest. like, the afro thing? not that cool. kinda bozo-like. and get rid of the women's shoes. i was 'gazing', but not in a good way. and the smoking cigarettes in a non-smoking venue and peering out all cocky-like while fuckin' loop pedals percolate? yeah man, fuckin rock star! and the bass player was a couple steps flat the ENTIRE time. she made kim gordon play like jaco.

ha. but, i liked them enough. i'm usually pretty harsh on the openers.

I guess I knew what I was in for, so I was totally psyched on 'em.

Get the new album, Satin Black, its really phenomenal. Or order their 2nd record, Corridors from their website (http://www.beyonderrecords.com). It really negates the need for most other instrumental bands, in my mind...

I thought the afros weren't a big deal. I mean, the dude's african-american, and he let his hair get long. That's what happens, didn't strike me as a pose or anything. But yeah, when I walked in in the middle of their set and there were the projections and the sounds and they looked really imposing among all that stuff. An awesome spectacle. He looked like a raging badass to me, not really dorky at all... super friendly guy, too.

but I'm totally biased cos I already totally love the shit out of that band.

Any insight on what SM's been playing on the tour?

basically the entirety of the face the truth album, with one track each from pig lib and s/t- animal midnight and pink india. then there was a couple bonus cuts as an encore, a cover (?), something i didn't know, and a john moen song (where SM played drums). i was close enough to see joanna's set list so i kinda ruined the excitement for myself early on.

pave cuts would have been nice. everyone, EVERYONE wants to hear em. i can understand why he'd want to just move on but come on. the people are aching for that shit.

pretty much all of 'face the truth' tonight in NYC, as you'd expect. "mama" started and only "kindling for the master" and "post-paint boy" went untouched. "water and a seat," "dark wave," and "jenny and the ess-dog" from the older albums. plus "dynamic calories," which i was really psyched to hear, and a couple others.

but the best song (by far) was one i didn't know, it ended the set. "clock" or "clark" in the title? (SM mumbles too much.) fucking awesome.

set overall was good, but not as strong as other jicks shows i've seen. paik were OK. some cool moments, but sorta bored me overall. crappy sound for em tho, i'm sure they'd improve on album.

apparently this song is called "carl the clod" - and based on how little google knows about it, i'm guessing it's an SM original. anyone know for sure?

I think it's just called "Carl" and is the only known studio track from Face the Truth that didn't end up on the album, someone was talking about how it's a B-Side for future use.
