What are some good albums that sound similar to Liquid Swords by GZA?

That album is great. A lot of the Wu-Tang-related albums from that era have similar beats. Check out Only Built for Cuban Linx by Raekwon and Ironman by Ghostface Killah. Not just like RZA but similar in design are the beats of DJ Premier of Gangstarr. Check out Moment of Truth.

fuck, that is such a good album. it blows most other hip hop out of the water to start with, so it's a difficult question to answer... I haven't listened to it in a while, but I went through a seriously obsessive period..

the other wu-tang you'd wanna check out if you haven't already is basically the gold rush of amazing albums they released in their first few years:

Enter the Wu-tang - wu tang clan
Tical - method man
Only Built For Cuban Linx - raekwon
Ironman - Ghostface Killa

these are all solid, startlingingly tight and original hip hop albums all produced within 2 years of each other by the clan (including liquid swords). Evidently they exhausted their creative facilities though, because I think they turned to shit soon after, with the occasional exception...

Those are probably the best, plus a couple great songs off the first ODB record... an amazing mythology they all built together, mixing urban project life with what they saw on Asian kung fu and ghost films. It got old fast, but the good stuff is awesome.

A few singles on top of Thor's album list. Who can live without the extended version of C.R.E.A.M?

I basically agree with the lone exception being GZA's latest: "Legend of the Liquid Sword"

great album, brought back alot of memories of when I listened to Liquid swords over and over and over...

I fully second the Ghostface, "Ironman" recommendation.

Also from that era:

Mobb Deep - "The Infamous" - dark album based on personal experiences, Mobb Deep's first

Rampage - "Scouts Honor... By Way of Blood" - Flipmode rapper's first solo effort. Very, very creepy and has a couple highlights. Can probably be found in your local $2 bin.

All in all... They just don't make hip-hop like they used to...
