View Full Version : Best Album of the Year (So Far)?

I just wanted to know what you guys thought the best album released this year has been so far.

My vote goes to Nada Surf's "Let Go", I know its not cool to like it but I think that it is great.

The runners up would have to be: Ted Leo/Px- Hearts of Oak, Jicks-Pig Lib. Holopaw-Holopaw

I'm glad you started this thread, because I'll be able to come back to it at different points through the year and gauge my changing tastes.

As of March 23rd, the best album I've heard this year (so far) would be Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Sort of silly to say that, since I've only had a week to spend with it...but as soon as I heard it, I was struck senseless. No other new record has done that to me this year.

Tobin Sprout - Lost Planets...... Superb. The Jicks are gonna have to come up with something pretty special to knock it off it's top spot.

Solbakken Klonapet: fourth album from a seemingly unknown (outside The Netherlands) but amazing Dutch band formed from the remains of another amazing Dutch band, Lul (who I discovered thanks to Gerard). The third Solbakken album, Zure Botoa, was my absolute favorite album of 2000. Check 'em out here (http://www.solbakken.nl) (new site, no sound samples at the moment, unfortunately). If I may be so bold: it'd be great if Matador signed 'em. They have an 80's indie rock feel, sort of, without sounding derivative or dated.

I don't think its the best album of the year so far but The New Folk Implosion album is pretty decent. Definetely not up there with Lou Barlow's other albums but still enjoyable.

Also, the debut from Halopaw is pretty rad.

Oh, and, I think "Failer" by Kathleen Edwards was released in the States in 2003 (released in Canada in 2002). Thats a brilliant album. My favourite so far....

i like 'televise' by calla. new sea & cake is quite good & laid back groovy. the books' 'thought for food'--though technically a 2002 platter--is pretty unbelievable; i just got around to it last weekend.

the upcoming bardo pond LP, "on the ellipse", is one of their best. good good stuff.
YLT's "summer sun" and the coltrane deluxe "a love supreme" both are awesome as well. i also expect good things from the upcoming mogwai and jack rose LPs due out later this year.

Like many on this board, I'm really enjoying the hell out of YLT's "Summer Sun".
The Angels of Light new album, "Everything Is Good Here...Please Come Home" might be the best thing M. Gira has ever recorded.
Califone's "Quicksand/Cradlesnakes" is mighty good. I've only had it for a little over a week, but it's probably going to still be spinning in my house at the end of the year. Maybe not quite as good as their "Roomsound" lp from 2001. Still really nice, though.
Someone already mentioned Calla's "Televised". I am in complete agreement. To that person (and others), if you haven't already checked out their previous record "Scavengers" (on Young God Records), that is the bomb! My favorite record of 2001. And, I still listen to it a couple times a week.

At this point, I'm going to have to say Manitoba's "Up In Flames". Close behind are Dump, M. Ward, Supersilent, Loose Fur and Calexico.

But there are so many things I'm still looking forward to this year: Prefuse 73, Broadcast, Four Tet, New Pornographers, Enon, and the truckload of albums that Madlib is involved with.

I just picked up my album of the year and after 5 consecutive listens it's hard to imagine anything else topping this one in the next eight months... the deadly snakes' "ode to joy". I caught them opening for jon spencer last year and they were pretty damn good, but nothing prepared me for this. this is like "blonde on blonde" meets the saints' "know your product". this is what rock & roll is all about.

well, really, when an album didn't get any attention til the next year, I say it's okay to include it. like the Avalanches album, which was like #3 on Pitchfork's list, even though it had come out the year before. so, I say Broken Social Scene is a fine choice for this year's list.

Hands down, "You Are Free" by Cat Power. Nothing else this year touches its pure beauty. Yo La Tengo has its moments on its new album "Summer Sun"...but it is few and far between.

Disappointments: Pig Lib...The worse effort out of Malkmus I have ever heard. Wouldn't it be nice if Malkmus would get serious just for one album...oh well. When is the new Modest Mouse album going to come out? To bad Mr. Green got the boot.

Oh yeah, you have to admit the White Stripes live up to all the hype and attention. Pure rock and roll!

No way on Pig Lib. It may be a good album, but surely not the best of the year. I would like to know if there is anyone who is *not* a crazed Malkmus fan who would argue that Pig Lib is the best release of the year thus far.

My earlier post was extremely biased, but actually true in that Pig Lib was the only album I've bought this year, and thus, the best album I've heard so far (and, I suppose, also the worst). Have been content with The 'Mats, Pixies, Pavement, and The Beatles for so long that I've shunned anything new. I think it's time I joined the New Century because my Slow Century is just about played out. If any of you have any suggestions, my narrow mind is willing to expand. For starters, been listenting to Electric Version for two days now and I can't get the melodies out of my head. Outstanding!!! So Pig Lib is now 2nd on my list. (Irving Plaza show still outstanding, though). B

The Microphones - Mt. Eerie
New Pornographers - Electric Version (but is still questionable - I finally got the money to purchase it a couple days ago, but it hasn't left my cd player since)
Xiu Xiu - A Promise
[technically] Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People

-edit to add in response to Paul-

Thanks for the tip on Out Hud, I hadn't realized that it was released in '02. I know that BSS was released in Canada during 2002, but I'm going by the stateside June date.

Guess what, scurvy=rad. Whatever you buy next will push Malkmus to 3rd.

As I stated earlier, The Wrens - The Meadowlands is golden, as is their entire output. Other things I've liked this year:

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak
The Postal Service - Give Up
Wire - Send

And if you really haven't bought anything in a few years, go buy The Shins - Oh, Inverted World right this second.

Pre June 2003:

1.Blur- Think Tank
2.Broken Social Scene- You Forgot It In People (US Release)
3.Stephen Malkmus- Pig Lib
4.Nada Surf- Let Go
5.Ted Leo and Px- Hearts of Oak
6.New Pornographers- Electric Version
7.Holopaw- S/T

Second Teamers:
Cat Power- You Are Free, Manitoba- Up In Flames, Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Fever To Tell, Supergrass- Life On Other Planets, Liam Lynch- Fake Songs (I think it is a hoot), and the Spacetwins- The End of Imagining.

Avoid at all costs:
Rooney- S/T: Blueside is really mega-catchy but the rest of the album is total rubbish.

Looking Forward To:
Radiohead, Dead Meadow, Modest Mouse, GBV, and the Eels.

The release of the regular edition is not until September, but there is a limited edition available from www.absolutelykosher.com with four bonus tracks and hand silkscreened covers done by the band. There are only 1000 of these. I know I posted this in the "new music" thread, but I wanted to make sure Futureman saw this.

Come on now Superdrag is great live. I've seen them twice and have been impressed each time. Album wise, they did take a step back with 'Last Call' but they are pure power pop in the same vein as Big Star and Teenage Fanclub.

On a side not Superdrag is playing potentially their final shows this June in Knoxville and Nashville (on the 20th and 21st). If you are in town you should definatelly check it out. I respect any band that can smoke and sing at the same time.

i second the fact about the people who name the broken social scene record as album of the year, for it just being released for the first time in the states this week.

i named 'let go' my import of the year last year, and its definitely a top contender for album of the year this year, battling along side [at the moment] blur's 'think tank,' radiohead's 'hail to the thief' and sm and the jicks 'pig lib.'

besides, i am good friends with the boys of the surf, actually. before a show in february we dined over sushi at a nearby sushi bar in baltimore and had a great time during soundcheck. i love them to death.

will avail to get the other CD's direct from the band.

thanks again for the excellent recommendation. .

Pinanti is good but they really put it all together with Zure Botoa (i.e., Pinanti made my honorable mention list for for 1999 (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/MrHCIHF/fave1999.htm) whereas Zure Botoa earned the number one spot for 2000 (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/MrHCIHF/fave2000.htm) and every time I pull it out it still is).

Anyhow, glad you liked it! Now get the rest!

Hmm... it appears that way. There are many records released this year I love (Electric Version, You Forgot It In People, Hail to the Theif, etc), but Show Me Your Tears is pure brilliance. I may be biased being the Frankophile that I am, but it truly is a great record which will certainly rank atop my list come year end.

i know i have a tendency towards hyperbole, but seriously you guys, PLEASE check this album out. i did not go into it a big death cab fan (though i will say i was anticipating it in a big way, based on new songs i saw them play at sxsw this year), but it is absolutely phenomenol. it is honestly NOT an album just for death cab fans or just for indie rock fans... it's for anyone who loves music. i'm so grateful that this album exists.

I used to brush DCFC off for being the epitome of typical boring indie rock, but lately, we have the facts... has slowly become one of my favorite albums. the photo album is kind of a snore though. I'm really excited to hear the new one. do you know when its coming out?

off the top of my head some of my current picks for best o' the year (so far):

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak
I say this is easily better than the stunning Tyrranny of Distance, which is saying a lot.

Scene Creamers - I Suck On That Emotion
Its no Make Up, but then again, its not supposed to be. Killer record.

Neil Michael Hagerty - The Howling Hex
holy Crap Holy crap! this one might be the top of the tops

Arab Strap - Monday at the Hug & Pint
I was wary, as I loooved the older stuff and Red Thread left me so cold, but this is amazing.

Saturday Looks Good To Me - All Your Summer Songs
sleeper record of the year! like the 6ths, in that one guy wrote the songs and got a cast of friends to sing 'em, but that's where the similarity ends. wonderful reverbed-out pop gems. The title isn't wrong, this is THE summer record.

Star Star Quarterback - Spacious Phrasing
home recorded, heartwarming weirdness. like beck if he gave a shit anymore but without as much pot, and tremendously awesome.

Lilys - Precollection
Bring it on, Funky! Kurt leaves the world of directly aping the productions styles of other eras and lets his amazing songs stand alone. I always thought it was a shame that the Kinks-sounding records were dismissed as copycats, because though he went to great lengths to nail the *sound,* the *songs* are distinctly his. well, now nobody can accuse him of copying any more than they can accuse any rock musician of copying anyone else... and man, the songs!

Deerhoof - Apple O'
I wish more bands played with this much abandon and love of playing. I thought Reveille was incredible, but this is just as badass, and so much more cohesive!

i was the EXACT same way with death cab for cutie. it's uncanny really, your wording. i still don't like their other albums (or the postal service), except for a few songs here and there, and that dntel song the death cab singer sang on. i've TRIED to like their other albums though, so i know their sound, and i would say that the new one is definitely for those who liked "we have the facts" but not "the photo album". it's more moody and less rock. and the production? awesome. defintely a headphones album. there are some painful lyrics, but let's be mature enough to realize that good lyrics are not a necessity for good melody-centric music. they're icing on the cake.

anyways, it comes out the first tuesday in october, whatever that date is.

Some months ago, I picked up Blur's Think Tank. I'm not really familiar with the Blur catalogue. Some years ago a friend lent me the self-titled album, and I was not impressed.

Anyway, I gave TT a quick listen--not really paying attention--and shelved it. Months later (last night in fact) I gave it a careful listen. I love the album. One of the more enjoyable finds for me. Of course, I really have nothing to compare the album to.

I'm not recommending it for album of the year, but it will be on my top ten list, along with Austin, TX's Single Frame's Wetheads Come Running, which I'm grooving to as I write.

I don't think I ever reached paul levels of high praise on the YYYs. That's not to say I don't really like the album. (Dodged a bullet? The YYYs CD is what? $8?)

I didn't like the Lilys when they were aping MBV or the Kinks, despite not hating either of those bands (you ever notice how Loveless's cover sorta looks like The Kink Kontroversy's cover?), why would I like them when their trying to be a band I loathe like Guided By Voices?

it was a joke, silly. YYYs is one of the few things you like that I actually quite dislike, so it provides me with paltry ammunition...

as far as lilys go, that's why I said "you probably wouldn't like it even if you did listen to it... " Its not really trying to be GbV at all though. It just ends up with a similar vibe, and I think fans of GbV would go crazy over the album. There's a difference between that and imitating them...

I suppose that I might as well post my pretty altered list now that everyone else is getting into the swing of it.

1. Xiu Xiu - A Promise
2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
3. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak
4. Ex Models - Zoo Psychology
5. Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

...but I'm still holding out on The Rapture. I have an aching suspicion that it will knock the living shit out of everything on this list. And for those that would like to flame me about it, my friend had an advanced copy that we spun at a dance party after exams. Everything was top-notch, but I can't really say I LISTENED to it as much as grooved to it - being that it was a party and all. I was too busy shaking my boot-ay.

the rapture album rocks - i really dig it. i hadn't heard much of them before i heard the album ... just "house of jealous lovers" a couple times ... but i'd heard all the hype. so much hype that i was doubting it.

but it fucking rules. i really like how they sequenced it ... the more electronic tracks are spread out amongst the rockier songs, and the mellow ones split them up. i didn't realize how diverse their sound could be. and it definitely makes you want to move.

it's on my list of favorites for the year, along with:

SM + the jicks - pig lib
four tet - rounds
blur - think tank
dead meadow - shivering king and others
prefuse 73 - one word extinguisher

and i guess reissues don't really count, but spiritualized - the complete works vol 1 has been a mainstay for me since it came out. one of those discs that i take with me everywhere.

they have "soft-rock" tendencies, and lord knows Ben Gibbard is sort of a hammy lyricist, but that one album I love (we have the facts and we're voting yes) is incredible. Mind you, it took me about a year and a half of on and off listening for it to hit me, but my assesment remains. I've got no shame for liking dippy indie pop.

1) More like it has always been the thing to remember whenever reading anything you have to say (although it's almost been completely usurped by yr comments aboot wanting to rape paul's mom, Mr Class) and how much of a grain of salt should be taken. Concurrently, it's because yr so dull, it's the only thing of any substance you've come up with in the last three years. If that's what you want to be remembered for, well, good on ya!

2) Musical sophistication at Pure Rock Fury (http://purerockfury.pitas.com), my July 17 update. 40 year old footage of Otis Redding gives chills, an album of middle of the road indie pop due out in a few months inspires cringing.

3) I brought it up because you seemingly wanted it brought up in yr preface. As I wrote in the first paragraph, it's the only memorable thing aboot you.

just because...

all the more perplexing is that what i actually said was nothing so damming as that

well, to be fair, what you said was that no other genre of music has anything on indie rock, the greatest form of music ever. it was some pretty intense hyperbole...

but also, to be fair, there's plenty of other things memorable about george, especially now that he's not trying to start fights with every post (and hasn't really, in many many months). and anagrama has easily eclipsed anything george has done to draw ire in the past. now he's just a kid talkin 'bout stuff he likes.. what's the problem?

Gosh.

I feel I may be sticking my neck out by posting ANYTHING at this point, but here goes...

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists .:. Hearts of Oak

You know that one album that you take a shot on that turns out to be exactly what you needed to hear that particular day? Because of one recommendation, you are almost willing to check out any other recommendation by the person who hipped you to it? This was that album. Tinobeat was the person.

Now I really want to check out Hagerty. If that works out, I am putty in your hands. (Just wanted to add to lovefest)

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks .:. Pig Lib

I don't quite understand the controversy. This is good rock and roll. I see a trend developing. "Bobby St. New Mexico and the Brass Tacks."

Blur .:. Think Tank

My first Blur album. Some tracks far outweigh others. Overall a decent balance though. Good musicians.

Dead Meadow .:. Shivering King and Others

Heavy and psychadelic. Mm Hmm. Simple. Mm Hmm. Well done boys. Well done.

Reissues:

If anyone pays any attention to my posts, they probably realize that most of the music I buy is a reissue of some sort. I'm always decades behind.

Led Zeppelin .:. How the West Was Won

Awesome. Totally. Chock full, all unreleased and CHEAP! Thank you!

Roscoe Mitchell and the Sound Ensemble .:. Snurdy McGurdy and Her Dancin' Shoes

Any AEC is welcome in my house. Before there was indie rock, there was indie jazz.

Keep the recommendations coming please! I have come onto some great music through this board!

What is that British Sea Power cd like, Paul?

People try to tag them as Joy Division revisionists (much like they did with Interpol), but it's actually pretty straight ahead brooding indie guitar rock. They have a tendency to write in minor keys, so the music could easily be a downer if it wasn't so, for lack of a better word, sparkling.

I finally got the Dump album, and I'm still waiting for that spark of brilliance that you've been gushing about. Still, I must admit that the Gerard Levert cover is off the chain.

wow, really? I think it's by far the best thing he's released under the Dump moniker, and is still somewhere in my top ten for the year.

other great releases thus far this year:

Cody ChesnuTT the Headphone Masterpiece
Songs: Ohia Magnolia Electric Co.
SM + the Jicks Pig Lib
Absinthe Blind Rings
Pernice Brothers Yours Mine and Ours
M. Ward Transfiguration of Vincent
the Folk Implosion the New Folk Implosion

I bought "Magnolia Electric Co." after your continued reaffirmation of this record and am sorry to say that I can't stand to listen to it. I've tried on several sincere occassions. I'll put it away and try again later.

I'm with you. I definitely prefer older, sparser Songs:Ohia albums over the new one.

I should have prefaced my admiration for the new album by saying if you weren't raised on CSNY, I don't know how great you'll think it is.

I love the old Songs: Ohia sound and the new sound equally. I've heard a bunch of new songs he's playing live from what will be the next album, and they are by far the best thing he's ever done.

Songs:Ohia's newest is my favorite album of the year. I don't know who produced it, but whoever did did a great job. It just sounds wonderful.

the legendary Steve Albini.

He did some great work----and then there was the work he did for Bush.

Albini's a strange cat. He refuses to be called a producer, yet every album he "records" sounds like an official Steve Albini product. He's worked with Bush and Nirvana, but he's also worked with no-name bands who scraped up a couple thousand bucks to record at EAR. He's got strong opinions on the music industry, but has no qualms with involving himself to the fullest.

If there's one thing I'll always remember him for, it's that sheet-metal guitar tone he got in Big Black. How the fuck do you make a guitar sound like that?

a couple more:

the Microphones Mt. Eerie
Alasdair Roberts Farewell Sorrow
Damien Jurado Where Shall You Take Me?

and from what I've heard of the new White Hassle record, it could very easily make the list as well.

but didn't Mount Eerie come out right at the very last gasping moments of 2002? I seem to remember that it did, because I thought it was odd timing, maybe to purposely come too late to make the best of lists of '02 and have nitpickers like me say "*actually* it came out in '02, so its not valid in '03."

like I said though, I'm not positive, and not feeling like doing the extra few clicks to check...

Paul

Nah, I think it actually came out in January of '03.

But I enjoy nitpicking as much as you do, sir tino.

johansen smith

it came out in late January, but K was selling the album a month early, like they do with pretty much all their releases, so technically, everyone's right.

that's what it is.. I remember seeing it on sale on kpunk.com in December, but didn't see it in stores til a bunch later...

so who's buying the next round?

Has anyone heard "Little Bird Flies into a Big Black Cloud (St. Ives)" by The Microphones?

I have it, it's mostly spoken word. the Blood vinyl-only LP is far superior.

tinobeat

I wouldn't call it spoken word, because the organ is pretty omnipresent and the vocals are his sort of standard sung/spoken (sunken?) style. either way, its veeeeery intimate, kind of creepy.

Its OK. I'd love to get my hands on Blood but its pretty hard to do that these days...

How does it compare to Mt. Eerie or The Glow, Pt. 2?

tinobeat

Little Bird... reminds me a bunch of the "Singing From Mount Eerie" disc, but without the choir. its super super stripped down, just Phil and an organ recorded live-to-tape, him playing sparse chords and tremblingly singing over it. Its hard to compare to those two albums because the production values are so different (or non-existent, as the case may be). I guess he wrote the whole thing while on tour in Scandinavia, came home and recorded it in one take.

I would say its a record for Microphones completists. I'm not really one of those, and I rarely listen to it, but its nice sometimes when sitting at home alone reading or something like that.

I knew that actually. Well, he did do a really good job.

For the record, the only Microphones record I have is "Song Islands," which I believe is a b-side collection. If you've never heard that record, it's worth it solely for "The Moon." I have heard fewer songs that are that entrancing. I do believe I'll be picking up so more Phil Elvrum stuff in the near future.

Morning consitutional.

pabost,

"The Moon" is indeed a gem. But you must pick up "Glow, Pt. 2." It's stunning. I love "Mount Eerie" as well, but the former has the edge. I'm waiting by the mail for my copy of "It was Hot, We Stayed in the Water" to arrive.

The v/a compilation from K Records ("Invisible Shield") should be accompanying it.

has anyone heard the "Black Mountain Music Project," because i think its the best album of '03. Puerto Muerto's "Bloated Corpses etc etc" and SM's "Pig Lib" hit my top three.

I reallly, really like the song "Oh! September" from the album, but I really wish the album had more songs and less filler noise tracks.

Might be another thread entirely, but "The Glow, Pt. 2" is a good album to do the nasty to. Now that's what I call a doppelganger.

That's the only time that I'll end a sentence with a preposition. Sorry.

"I really wish the album had more songs and less filler noise tracks." Indeed. But maybe not less filler. Just more songs.

I think there's a new proper Mirah album coming out soon on K, so she probably saved her best stuff for that anyways.

she's tops in Brazil

and though half of the album is in portuguese, half in english, it is beautiful music. it took awhile for it to grow on me; now it is malignant.
