So I was talking to a friend of a friend the other day about his experience with a Dave Matthews concert he had gone to and he just kept raving about what a great jam band "Dave" is. I tried to be polite without sounding elitist or anything. Then he asks me, "So what's your favorite band?" I was speechless for a moment. I just had a real hard time limiting myself to One Favorite Band. I ended up telling him about Pavement, but that's only because that's what popped in my head at the moment, but I'm still not sure if I can identify one band that's my favorite.
So, if you had tell someone who your favorite band is, what would that one band be?

GBV
15 years ago, I'd have said U2 without blinking. Times change.
The first band that popped into my head when I read the question, though, was the Pixies.

I guess my default band is Pavement. Though I don't listen to them regularly much anymore as there's so much on my plate, there's still yet to be a band as important to my musical development as them.
2nd would probably be The Make Up or Guided By Voices.
of course, this doesn't take into account the dozens of other favorites I've had, but those three are unimpeachable favorites (funny considering the love/hate thing I had for GbV for years and years.)

i get kinda embarressed at this answer due to having been given much shit about it.. but it's The Doors. Not the myth or morrison or any of that, but that first album....
then again, it could be Velvet Underground, too..
my favourite individual artist is PG Six.

Without thinking I'd probably say Pavement or The Olivia Tremor Control.

The answer I use to end the conversation quickly and simply: The Beatles
But then if I were talking to someone more well versed in "alternative rock" or whatever, it'd switch among bands like:
for someone older: Ramones, Stooges, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Husker Du, Pixies, Mission of Burma
someone younger: Sleater-Kinney, Decemberists, Microphones/Mount Eerie, Xiu Xiu, Liars, Pixies, Mission of Burma

I have so much hatred for these bands and others like them, that the only way to get rid of it is to transfer some of it to the source.

Foreigner... How anyone could hate "Head Games" is beyond my comprehension. (and "Juke Box Hero," too)
